  1. That's a big assumption, isn't it? Lots of people, myself included, love the look of those sort of dogs .. and being a male , he probably did what so many human males do .. left the dogs intact ... cos that's the 'man' thing! he certainly is not alone in keeping tough looking entire male dogs!! :) AS to why he didn't have secure lockups, I cannot comment, as I didn't see inside his house/yard
  2. Up to you .... I know here, our dogs have so much else happening , they tend to not lick at things ... but a single pup may be different . perhaps , when walking/chewing bones/training leave him be ..and see how he goes ?
  3. Sooty was meant to find your family , I think :) What a lovely girl. R I P Sooty
  4. ..and of course he will :) It feels odd..and , no doubt it smells ..and , so , it needs cleaning . They take some months to grow back completely ...
  5. <br style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: verdana, tahoma, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 17.600000381469727px; background-color: rgb(238, 242, 247); ">..It sure has been an expensive time Nail doesn't 'heal ' ..it has no blood supply . A split /broken nail will stay that way ..and should be removed asap, to stop bacteria getting inside .
  6. What lines are in her pedigree? perhaps go back over a few generations , and see what her forbears looked like ..are there any which have the appearance you want?
  7. yes :) I did watch that ..the wolf man intervened on a few occasions ! I guess when you are a bit crazy (in a good way) , fluent in the language , eat with them, smell like them, and respect their manners ..well, it obviously works! Do NOT try this at home !!!
  8. The poaching evidence was just shocking ....so many snares & things ....
  9. i enjoyed tonight's show :) yes, it's overkill, and 'makes good TV' ... but I find it interesting , and like watching the changes in the young people as they share real life :) The different dogs are interesting as well :)
  10. OK.. I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow :)
  11. ..and she may well have one blue eye forever....... :)
  12. Beagle pups are just way too cute :) Welcome, melody !
  13. poor Milo . What if he does get stressed, and hurt ..growls & nips at the pup? What will pup do ? Will he act like a Tonka Truck and barge in ..or will he back off? if you aren't around , you won't know until it's too late ..and one of them is hurt. You're doing a sensible thing in asking for help :) Now is the time to learn how to communicate with Tonka..and show him discipline and rules . What you see as 'cute' now ..and what he enjoys , will NOT be cute when he's 40 kgs.
  14. *looks at scars on hand and arm from being careless and getting in the way of a fight , with two dogs who went on to be guide dogs.*
  15. He wasnt bitten? What ripped his ear off then - a faery wand?
  16. ..In retrospect , perhaps the vet should have just pulled the split nail off ..leaving a nice clean smooth open quick to heal properly , instead of setting up a 'bacteria sandwich' ? Hope now she stays well :)
  17. :) Ok... have her feet dry ..let her run a minute or two on the sand ..and quickly check that toe. IF there is an amount of sand coating the quick..then there is still blood enriched spongy tissue exposed.... If there are only a couple of grains ..and no blood .. then I would venture a guess that it is well on the way to healing! disclaimer..obviously not a vet opinion ...just experience
  18. ..if the quick looks red/moist/'spongy'/bloody ..maybe wrap to keep clean..(I don't bandage, as often the bandage rubs on the nerves and hurts more ) but if it looks clean/dry ..I'd leave it alone, honest. IMO, The more an injury is wrapped , fiddled with.. the more the dog may try & 'clean' it ..keeping it moist, and allowing bacteria/fungi to get a hold. When I betadine .. it is a quick dunk spray before a feed/bone/run..so it has those couple of minutes to soak in & kill everything ...while dog is otherwise occupied :)
  19. :) Our workers lose nails regularly ..and half the time we don't notice for ages ..cos they don't show any pain! I usually just betadine them for a few days ..and very soon they are back racing around again . I've not ever seen any infection ..or incomplete nail growth .... I would suggest a beach walk/swim would be nice for her ... and , a point... are you sure that what you are seeing is actually nailbed and not soft new nail? If the injury occurred weeks ago ..perhaps new nail has been growing underneath , protected by the old nail??
  20. I think it's just people interpreting phrases differently. To me - if we accept that dogs can be aggressive, that this sort of thing can happen for x reason (x reason being to do with dog behaviour) then a comment like 'this is what dogs do' makes sense. I understand that it trivializes and normalizes the behaviour which I don't think is the intent. But if we can all agree that this is not unexplainable 'monster'-like behaviour and in fact is easily explained if you understand dog behaviour, we can logically say that this is what (some) dogs do. If more people recognized that and trained and contained their dogs adequately, these things wouldn't be happening. *nods* *admits to error in semantics.*
