ermmmm perhaps it is because they are all HUMANS ? Fallible and feeling humans...that's all. I CAN UNDERSTAND some of what he is feeling. .it's not difficult ..it is merely acknowledging/understanding another human's pain, whether they are criminal or not , victim or not ...very basic . ..and I am very proud of the years I spent in that profession! yep.

LOL You know part of the reason why ..it is why you posted .The pup plays as it would with another pup..bites/growls etc . AS the pup grows, and if this 'play' continues , there is a real risk of a decent bite ..and a stirred up dog.

raz- I'm thinking along the same lines as you. To those really confused by empathy .. there are good and honest DOLers who have lost their precious dogs thru accidents/mishaps etc. Do you think they should never be allowed to own another dog? Do you think they should be charged ? Do you not have a tiny inkling of how someone responsible for an animal feels when that animal dies under their care? I hope you never ever get that feeling of having something happen to an animal or person in your care . I really do.

Jules... Seal Rock/s ...just near Victor Harbor ..amazing spot!!

THanks for the extra info Brookestar ..from what source is it? IF it is the case that he was using a training van , and did leave one dog inside ...then yes, that is markedly different to a scenario I had imagined ... where the person may have been an office worker or someone transporting a dog in a sedan ..something they may have not done before, or often. (I have also been a guide dog trainer )

Absolutely beautiful !! :) :) Looking forward to some serious Seal Rock model shots :p

Really? So you believe he did it on purpose, and that he had no feelings toward the dog?? It would be helpful if you could quote who posted that so they could respond as I have no idea without going through the whole thread who posted that, thanks :) OOps ..it was ODIN-GENIE

I don't like the term dog lover .... I think what may come across in posts on DOL is that there are those experienced and long term owners of /workers with dogs who see things with more pragmatism. Some see dogs for what they are- a wonderfully complex and beautiful animal with whom we can communicate well, which returns our friendship, and which can work with us ,and adapt to our needs :) not furry 'people' or surrogate children ....personally I feel that takes away so much of what 'dog' means to me . To me .. 'dog' means power, and a wonderful gift of senses to use in their world .It means speed and reactions and adaptability, and skill. My enjoyment of things dog includes being with them in a 'pack' situation - watching them hunt or work sheep, guide a visually impaired person, and adjust their behaviours to accomodate humans who behave a bit differently, or have less mobility . They are just amazing creatures , and I could not be without them in my life. They are not human ,they are animals - complex and intuitive :) :) The terribly sad loss of a trainee Guide Dog ...yes it did happen because of the actions of a human .not on purpose, not deliberate neglect , but because he is human, and his brain let him down.

Red Kelpie ... you probably have not picked an 'ideal' first puppy, breed wise ..as , to stay calm and content , kelpies need LOTS of mental work, and quite a bit of physical work too ..they are very clever dogs , and do best with a lot of interaction/training /activities :) Is your pup from dogs used for working? You will get a better idea from reading this thread CLICK HERE :) and also, this thread CLICK HERE and this info CLICK CLICK and CLICK

Simple .. don't playfight. Play fetch...or play at teaching her tricks etc , instead :) I don't think I have ever done the playfight thing ...I am not a puppy, so there is no need to :) Our pups enjoy having me roll a ball , or wave a soft toy along for them to follow & grab ( then we practice "Give" ) ;) They also love "which hand"..as in which hand is the treat/toy in :D And they do enjoy the 'stand still for a minute whileMum plays with your feet/ears' which is always rewarded by a few seconds of enthusiasticeplay/praise .

Not your suburb , not your dog.....not the way you choose to live ...but for them it works. The dog is under shelter and has water and is obviously known by locals ...everyone seems happy. If this is a regular occurrence , and no one has yet called the 'authorities' why would you want to disturb the staus quo? Think of how the owner's life may be disrupted if you report it ? I used to leave Kieran tied outside the shops in my town .... he , and the little kids just LOVED it ....he had endless hugs and admirers... and , your comments about the dress etc of the residents ..that is certainly not the most thoughtful post ....... I do agree .. just leave them to live their lives ..... -
So many variables and what ifs here... if the dog was with puppy walkers ..the employee may not have been training it ..... but may have been asked to pick the dog up, perhaps .... and then forgot she was on board?Do we know what type of vehicle it was? If it was a van/wagon , fitted out .. a dog could be invisible if lying down quietly ..so no memory jog being a senior staff member, maybe he had an urgent call/meeting ...dashed inside and then got overwhelemd with stuff? WE don't know ... Poor Dog - an awful death ..and I have sympathy for the employee ...who may well resign or suffer illness after the incident. It can and does happen that dogs are forgotten ...

perhaps the owner has nowhere safe to leave the dog for that period of time while they work /shop/whatever ? -

poor dog - just from your posts it seems she is really stressed by the change in circumstances , and perhaps has not had much life experience out of her own environment ?
