  1. ..and if wet finds a powerpoint .....
  2. the only things I can think of are to shut off rooms ..or leave dog outside , with access to laundry/shed or kennel. It can be a dangerous game .... for all sorts of reasons ..eating inappropriate items/playing with things electrical .. items breaking ... dog being injured ....
  3. Eye removal , I have found, instantly removes all that pain & discomfort :) the eyelids are left closed ..and dogs I've known heal up quickly and very happily :) Not sure why you would want to try a prosthetic eye .... ?
  4. That's a terrific offer :) Mickadaman ... if you need help , this is a great chance :) It's a big responsibility caring for an older dog , and it's easy to get overwhelmed , especially if you are apprehensive about vets and their treatment . Thinking of you .
  5. ..and if a dog is so ill .. then it may well just die anyhow I have owned dogs for 50 yrs, worked at a Vets for many years ... and have seen more vomiting/diarrhoea than I want to remember ! There are many many causes - from very serious infections, to blockages, to other ilnesses in other organs , to parasites, to eating/drinking stuff ..and there is NO way anyone can tell , unless they are trained, and can see /touch the dog. You are doing the right thing. Late, yes.. but the right thing . I definatly will take him to vet frist thing tomorrow morning. Good Plan :) Hope it's something simply fixed! keep us posted

  7. But he has being like that for a week, I left plenty of fresh water for him poor little boy ..being left with a painful and potentially dangerous condition for so long ..it is always best , and often cheapest , to find the CAUSE before treating things from internet advice ...
  8. Please do not diagnose from the internet ... and yes, definitely a vet appointment tomorrow, unless he gets worse tonight . No food tonight- give his belly a rest ..and get a thorough checkup tomorrow . Do NOT let the vet vaccinate him while he is still unwell - that's a big strain on the immune system. Diarrhea and vomiting have too many causes to make guesses , sorry . Hope all goes well at the vets :)
  9. YES!! the terms furbaby, et al tend to numb the mind to dogs' abilities in the hunt/kill category. There are instincts/reactions and the tools to back them up contained within waggy tailed companion .. but with the intense moulding of many dogs to fit into the 'little furry accessory' box ...the predatory ability gets further and further away .. and it is just so sad. There are many of you here who have working dogs .. who switch 'on' & 'off' ......you can see clearly that which they are capable of . Somehow Joe/jenny public need reminding of this ...and children need to be kept safe.
  10. poor lady ... I hope she doesn't get any problems . From experience ..calf bites can be very painful
  11. Thanks , people. It is so different , in good and awful ways No fights thru the (barred) window between Dougie & Mr.W...... no bites to feet /toes if I dare move in bed .....no having to shut off rooms to stop a ginger cat pee party .... But SUCH a big hole ..no fluff monster lying on my belly /chest as I doze in front of the teev... no one leaning on the keyboard and forever putting capslock on ...no one sleeping on my boots ...no one following me around and lying there watching me .... you all know what it's like ...
  12. not good .... see if any of this applies? LINK LINK
  13. if the dog looks interesting ..I may chat to the owner ..but I don't usually feel a need to pat/cuddle strange dogs ..photograph them ? YES!
  14. if he is a nice co operative dog he may not need anaesthetic ... did your vet tell you he would?

  16. I grew up with 'spurwinged plovers' and still use it in day-to-day. "quoth" fantastic name!! "nevermore" ;)
  17. thanks ... All our cats are buried in/near a rabbit warren not far from the house . Most of the cats have either caught or been fed bunnies from this warren ..so they go there to stay ... No pretty caskets/urns here. ..just a favourite blanket and lots of tears . Here is where my boy's body now lies .. prickle bushes will ensure his peace is not disturbed ...and the baby bunnies play around in the morning sun . Not too bad, really .....
  18. Thankyou folks ...things will be very different now . I carried his body to where it was to be buried ..did that , and turned around to see our only other cat, Dougal, sitting watching . The dogs didn't come with me ..but he did - though it could be that he wanted to make sure his arch enemy was finally gone .... I also opened the door from the 'cat room' to my room after doing some clearing away ..and from a spot on the bed , Dougie purred me to sleep ... he hasn't been on my bed since Mr W arrived ..as Mr.W had to be kept totally separate from other cats at all times due to aggression. It's a new day - one with a big hole in it.
  19. ..tonight I put down my gorgeous fluffy boy ... he obviously had a painful urethral blockage ...and I was torn between driving almost 2 hrs in the dark , an emotional mess, for surgery which I have seen fail dismally and a quick end to his pain . I chose the latter ..yes, I am aware that some of you will not condone this choice , I'm sorry .. He is now with our other cats , not far from the house , wrapped in his pooh bear quilt ...and I am bereft. You all know how I felt about him ... he was the one who always stuck by me .. was always in contact somehow , and was the love of my life for the past 6/7 years . Thank you all for also liking his stories and photos over the years - I'm sure he knew :) Goodnight my boy .....now who's going to growl and alert me to things that go 'bump' in the night? ... photos
  20. yes, don't forget to use a proper harness which is made for pulling a load :)
  21. They annoy me ... as when they find a delicious bit of dead something ... furred, scaled ..or feathered - one in particular (I call him Edgar Allan Crow) washes/soaks it in my frog pond! Yukky stuff floats around in there afterwards :/ I tried to get a photo of Edgar Allan with a chook egg the other day - rolled an egg onto the lawn... bent down, grabbed camera ..stood up ............. gone! Un co-operative beast, he is :p
  22. The crows here are DEADLY......to oranges/walnuts/mandarines ...but I have never seen one attack healthy poultry/pups/kittens /rabbits ..tho , of course they will feed on ill/incapacitated livestock.
