  1. it can be very hard ,as an owner, to manage a dog like this . been there, done that ..... got the grey hairs to prove it . Fear/nervous aggression is scary and upsetting for dog and humans.... yes, I advise you consult a vet , and a recommended trainer/behaviourist . A little dog such as this is not feeling comfortable a lot of the time , and especially as you rescued her, must make you feel awful Not your fault!! She may well have been born sensitive ...she may ,too, have now started to react to all the changes in her short and worried life. To get a clear view - proper assessment needs to be done ..and experienced, personal opinions/advice given.
  2. Kieran always used to make me laugh ..because if anything went missing ,,we knew who had borrowed it by the soft toy left at the crime scene ..pretty much always ;) he was a 42 kg sook ..and used to carry his toys everywhere ..but had to put them down when he was borrowing things ,obviously ;)
  3. maggie is not into anything other than ruling her household /chasing rabbits/giving her owner panic attacks ;)
  4. Ok... Good news time :) Bloods all came back fine .. apart from showing a mild dehydration .....vet now thinks it was /is macadamia poisoning. Maggie is getting use of her hind end a little more each hour ....has barked thru the door at the dog across the road ..and is drinking and toileting . *whew* everyone!! here is the patient .. (not taken today :p ) miss maggie may-hem
  5. maggie is home ... still no blood results . The vet said as she only ate 8 -10 macadamias it is unlikely to be them .... Hmmmm..... Maggie only weighs around 8-10 kg i think..... anyhow - as she is drinking , no IV either. She has had beef broth and watered down milk ..has , after being carried outside tottered a half metre..pee'd ..and then had a drink when carried back inside . So ..waiting on an update -
  6. .. I am hoping in one way my guess is correct ,and that it is indeed macadamia toxicity ....that seems to resolve with good hydration and support. I am so hoping for good news later today ... My cousin will be devastated if the news is bad ...
  7. This thread is now PINNED- with a name change (thank you TROY)
  8. Just got a phone call ..little Maggie having trouble walking- very lethargic .Went to vet - tender around liver - blood taken . Home again ..dog collapsed. Sobbing owner .. me trying to not panic ..I asked what had she eaten that was different .." yes- we shared some macadamias last night" Little dog is now on the way back to the vets , where, hopefully with support , she will recover . Any spare thoughts please, for the cheeky Miss Maggie .... a little scruff of a JRT X with a HUGE personality ..... Thankyou.
  9. Sorry, Gillybob - ratties are not here for long... he sounds a real character :)
  10. semaphore is very dog friendly .Glad he enjoyed his treat!
  11. Sweet potato is a vine of some sort , unrelated to the solanum family ,AFAIK, too.
  12. as long as he cannot fit (or almost fit) them in his mouth at once ..and he is used to eating bones . if they are really hard..and cut into sections a few inches long .... bin them ..they are dangerous
  13. yep... find someone reliable to professionally advise. Worse case....The owner may demand you pay as long as the injury impedes on the cat's life .....best to get advice and write up an agreement .
  14. what about a puddle in his yard?..just a little one ..float some food on it ;) work up from there .... the more you subject him to beach etc ..and the more he has a chance to react badly .. possibly that response will be ingrained ( must admit we do it the tough way .. we have a little landing ..water is shallowish ..we take youngsters who don't try on their own out and place them gently in teh water ..let them feel that it holds them up ..facing the riverbank ... it is only a couple of metres ..and they splash/wade ashore ,where they get HEAPS of play/praise . We repeat a few times... with other dogs ..and very soon.. they swim & enjoy . except for SOME who never do ..my Hamlet was one of those. He would wade up to his belly ... no more, thankyou ..loved wading
  15. this may be of help :) CLICK HERE also ..THIS has been mentioned on D O L quite a bit :)
  16. I am glad to see some more info printed - thank you for the update .yes, we can only go on what posters choose to share- and it is always nice when an OP comes back to fill us in - everyone learns a bit that way :) going on this opening statement - it seemed to me a decision had already been made by the breeder ...come what may - and it was a decision which made me uncomfortable , as did the apparent advice given by the vet!! Presuming the bitch made it a bit easier by reacting badly or indifferently to the pup( as so many do after a C section, and being a maiden bitch) .... I hope owner and bitch are recuperating well .
