Best/ Worst Dog Treats And Chews
persephone replied to JenniCB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh.. things like cheese/sausage are only ever used in tiny tiny pieces during active training sessions , AFAIK .. so the dog doesn't get all that much of it ,,but the treats are just that - something REALLY special to be used in short bursts :) -
Best/ Worst Dog Treats And Chews

'sensitive stomach" as in how .....? are there only certain proteins he can tolerate? is fat a problem? Fibre? what about bones? natural , fresh, and available in all different flavours ? Sheep/cow/turkey/chicken/pig/fish/deer...... surely one will be suitable? it is really easy to dehydrate slices of apple , etc .... What about using the dog's normal food as training "treats" ... a meal spread out over a day ..no scoffing from a bowl , that way ;) -
but is a tassie devil in disguise !

he and his sister are 2 little oopses .... his sister is red, he is jet black - together, they are Ess&Don ;)
-
awww, look at those faces - not a naughty one amongst them ;)
-
no :) that's how our dogs stay cool .... it's an instinctive thing .

I can't ever imagine a dog NOT having raw meaty bones ( and I don't count marrowbones in this category )
-
sound asleep .... :)

Don has, after all his 4 weeks life experience , learned that completely covering up with damp sand, in a shady spot , lets you sleep like a ...well..like a baby, even tho it's 40 degrees

I would advise going and asking a vet ..it's hard to treat something when you don't know what it may be . It may not be an allergic reaction at all !! :) make an appointment and get it checked out ..then you can implement a management program .. ( oh, and don't put anything on the area prior to visiting the vet - the vet needs to see it at its worst ) these unknown things are frustrating
-
please ask the vet before home treatment .... best to avoid drugs until you KNOW that what you are using is the appropriate one .....

Don pup is 4 weeks old today - he likes to follow Dougal around , and luckily Dougie likes pups :)
-
poor old thing .. and you as well... Hope he has settled and that it was a one-off.

So.. you wanted a BIG akita please tell us you didn't pay extra because these were 'bred to be bigger' ..or somesuch..... you didn't see the sire? Do you have photos /data on him? Do you know the temperament of both parents/the lines ? I may be missing something here .. but it seems , in your eagerness to join the "size matters" game - perhaps you have been taken advantage of ...
-
Ok... if you have the pedigrees .. and bought him for showing you would have researched his family ..if they are great examples, they will have been shown/used as breeders ..and there should be some details of their sizes/shapes/weights available online. Did they do well at shows ? did pups they produced look terrific and did they weigh as heavy as you want yours to?

Here's Gert this morning - she is in her teens ...

April piglet kindly lent us some of her mites when she first arrived yes, foxes are very unfortunate in often dying because of severe infestations leading to a shut down of their skin's functions ,and infection. it is a horrible thing

IMO , he has another 12 mths or so of growing to do yet !! I think your vet is a bit off the mark , sorry . have you spoken with his breeder? They would be the ones who know what his lines grow like/how fast .... they will have records of parents/grandparents etc , and how much they grew ... I can't speak for akitas ..but our koolies/kelpies go thru a lean stage during pup/teen transition ... where nothing much happens, then the muscle gets laid down and an adult shape appears ..and no, I do not measure/weigh .. I see/feel the results ;) if you are really concerned , perhaps get blood tests done to measure hormone levels, etc .........his body will grow when it will .. I don't think he's read the book on how much he should put on each week ;) Can you get to an akita club/show? Folks there could help you understand...

I love old dog faces .......... :)

He is not an adult akita ..which is why he doesn't look like one ;) simple. LOL.
