  1. ask for scans..not just verbal comments. "should be OK with kids" wouldn't swing it with me .... so you bring a dog home who is unsure of kids ..or just does not like them . What do you do ? I know you are desperate - however, this is a total unknown ..and unlike a rescue/breeder, I BET this guy would not take the dog back if it was unsuitable..or help you with training hints!
  2. Aahh.. sounds feasible - it also means the smaller dog could have some fear aggression or similar around other dogs if it's been bullied badly
  3. @Aja Did you ask why they are selling a dog that is only 2 years old an so cute looking ? LISTEN CAREFULLY to the replies !! have you seen any videos of it walking on lead or anything ?
  4. Run away now.you just do Not have enough info on this dog.
  5. How sad. You were advised months ago to find herding clubs/seek a trainer's advice before the behaviour escalated ....rehoming a problem dog is NOT easy, and , you are correct, she will very possibly end up with a not - so - suitable home . The ONLY suggestion I can make is that you pay for a phone consultation with the BEST person for this type of behaviour ...a phone consult - and perhaps videos of the behaviour will at least give you a professional assessment and guidelines on which to base your plans . You can't afford NOT to do this And the above advice A problem shared, & all that !
  6. I would not imagine there to be any sort of reimbursement etc due from the breeder , UNLESS there was a health guarantee covering this sort of thing. Torn ligaments/sprains/fractures etc happen . They are accidents .
  7. CRATE TRAINING (as opposed to shoving a dog in a cage) is a process of making the proper sized(quite large) crate a HAVEN for a pup/dog In the crate is a comfy bed, the best chew toys ..the yummiest treats, and the ability to be near the humans still , whilst having very distinct boundaries! Crates can also be covered in cool weather, can be a 'den' which dogs have an instinctual love for ....they can be somewhere to put a pup if there are annoying toddlers or other dogs , or if you're having a party, and still want pup to feel part of the evening While I have actually never used a crate for my dogs ..preferring a light chain ..I have used crate training for pet pigs, goats and lambs..all of which took to it really well , and none of which ever saw it as a punishment - it was bedtime/treat time/safety time/chill time . Were I younger,in different circumstances and starting with a pup..I would crate train , no problems . Well Done on asking questions/having a discussion
  8. It is REALLY hard for babies to have to sleep alone ....pups are designed to still be with their families /to stick close to their parent/littermates . Until she is completely housetrained and able to sleep happily thru the night, being near you in a crate makes sense, so you can get up in the night when needed Or are you teaching her to toilet on pads inside?
  9. Oh, Nikki I hope you have also whispered in Scout's ear that things may be happening Keep smiling.
  10. Welcome to DOL Did you get your gorgeous girl from an ANKC registered Breeder ? The official standard does call for pricked ears , and Breeders breed to the standard . Her ears MAY be very late in standing up , or she may just have that type of ears . Where did she come from ? Did you see her parents/family?Did they have pricked ears? Do you have any written proof of her parentage ?
  11. Tricky. No one can just 'take' a dog, even with the very best of intentions Reporting to the RSPCA is really the only thing you can do
  12. So sorry to read your news ....
  13. Oh, Stitch.... I feel it ! With a large breed it can be physically dangerous for you as well . Glad he enjoyed 'thinking inside the box " ;) Hopefully some more brain games will help give him a focus elsewhere....
  14. I suggest - Find out exactly what is happening, SAVE UP . and fix it so the next 10 years can be enjoyed without extra risk of limping/'sprains etc , or know what management you need to start to avoid him injuring it . perhaps, with a weak ankle, fast & furious games are a no-go .... either way I would think it a good starting point instead of almost $200 on a brace which may not work /may exacerbate the injury if not fitted correctly, or not suited to the type of injury , then perhaps more vet fees another time .... meanwhile you have a dog who limps on that foot . and I'm not sure why you put PAIN in inverted commas ;) it is real - it hurts, and your boy can feel it , sure enough . Rest him as much as possible , and I hope he feels much better soon !
  15. What a wonderful lot of memories for a fantastic dog!
  16. Awww Thank you for the update! Hope all is going well.
  17. W&H..he's enjoying that walk Picking up the odd wind-borne sniff of goodness....
  18. Tooth chattering(often accompanied by frothing at the mouth) in male dogs- especially if there is bitch-in-season scent is quite common. FLEHMEN response is very different, and is where the top lip is turned upwards/inside out to expose little ducts in the roof of their mouth to the air/scent Teeth don't chatter during this time ..in fact the animal usually holds fairly still . Humping can be done out of pure excitement /aggression /territorial display etc .... sniffing is what dogs DO ..it is how THEY 'see' their world . We check our phone screens, stop to admire a car, or a tree, or clothes in a window..a dog sniffs. If there are certain hormones in the urine/faeces that they sniff..their body reacts. Castration can lower the sex drive, which may stop the teeth chattering . Leg lifting/marking is partly learned, so that may lessen a little ..it will never disappear.
  19. Mister roly-poly!! LOL . he is just lovely
