Grooming Table For Difficult Cocker Spaniel
persephone replied to jnh's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
remember how you described the dog ? ..don't forget muzzles can be useful , and not as stressful as tight leashes/slippery tables/nervous handlers.. A nice basket or jafco one which allows him to puff out his anxiety but not bite :) Are you doing him at home because he has been scared/aggressive at a groomers ? I think the more restrictions- the more fearful and snappy he will become, poor thing perhaps sedation/clipping at a groomer/vet would help - then, at home , lying on your lap/couch... as a treat filled, SHORT duration experience, repeated often , he could be played with /brushed easily on the short un tangled coat ......teaching you BOTH that it can be a relaxing thing ..... and as coat grows- hopefully confidence and acceptance grow with it. sniff brush= treat allow brush to travel over back once = treat allow brush over back twice =treat etc etc .... -
Nothing much else to say, san & paul - :) you might enjoy reading this - lots of ideas ! CLICK HERE and Click here Click HERE for a somewhat technical, but thorough and useful guide to dog behaviour , how their bodies /senses work . Understanding some of this helps explain why pups/dogs are doing things like growling/ chewing/ scent marking .....etc

this looks interesting - and for the price , maybe worth a try? ROGUE SAFARI Up to 8x More Light No Batteries Required Optically Engineered Lens Concentrates Light Optimized for Lenses Over 100mm Mounts to DSLR Hot Shoe Molded from rugged polycarbonate materials Rogue Safari focuses the light from a DSLR's pop-up flash to greatly increase the available flash power at extended distances. Safari is designed to work with crop-sensor (APS-C/DX) Canon and Nikon DSLRs. While the Rogue Safari Pop-up Flash Booster is compatible with the vast majority of modern DSLRs, some early model cameras, including the Canon 10D, 20D and 30D will not accommodate the adapter.

Like any dog - there are variances in individual temperaments :) They are ori=ginally bred to be determined and strong and to nip at the heels of cattle , regardless of hooves, dirt, horns from birth to age 4 a cattledog called Plonk was my 'nanny' in the bush. he wasn't indoors , but I spent a lot of time outdoors, and he guarded me from snakes, other dogs, and grandparent I remember him as being very patient and bombproof - and a great snake killer! neighbours here bought one many years ago, as a guard dog ....FAIL . he was the most loveable and tolerant of dogs - entire male - not treated terrible well - but useless as a watch dog - and fantastic with the toddler grandkids . he did , one day kill one of the tiny silkies who had taunted him for years ...one day there was no one to intervene That was not held against him , thankfully ... I have been bailed up by ACDs in the city - as said , mis handling , and not supplying them with what they need can cause many problems . and yes- I am VERY cautious around them .

good skin/coat condition comes from inside :) She may benefit from foods/supplements with fatty acids - don't forget omega 3 . Anything you put on the outside will indeed attract dust ..also there may be an allergy/irritation risk when she is with vulnerable people . I suggest feeding her things good for skin health ..and washing her in the simplest unperfumed , least oil stripping substances you can find... :) There are some Goats Milk soaps which have few ingredients/no perfume etc .... I have used them , but forget details, sorry ...

CANINE CORNER an excerpt from one article " How Well Can Children Interpret a Dog's Emotional State? .... One of the reasons why the adults seem to do better overall appears to be that they are paying attention to more features of the dog's behavior, while the young kids focus on one or maybe two aspects of what the dog is doing or sounding like, and nothing more. The fact that the four and six-year-old children do most poorly at recognizing fearful emotional states in dogs may help to explain why the dog bite rate is so high in their age groups. A fearful dog may become aggressive and bite if it feels threatened. That fear motivated bite will be initiated without any growl or bark. Since the kids are dependent upon the sounds the dog might make to accurately identify aggressive behavior, that fear motivated bite will occur unexpectedly and from the child's point of view without any warning.

Bloody Discharge From Nose After Eye Removal
persephone replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
:) well, if she keeps on travelling by impact - there is the possibilty of the healing sites being jiggled !! Glad she is enjoying her walks again! A thought - have you tried using 'signs' for her to follow paths not involving walls? use (real) vanilla , or lavender/ peppermint oils .. just a tiny amount and train her so that this smell shows the way to her food /treats . put drops along safe paths, maybe ..so she has something to follow? You can also help by using a carpet runner or similar - so she has teh cue of different underfoot texture to find her way around . (apologies if you have done this ) -

Cheaper Veterinary Surgeon In Perth W.a. Please
persephone replied to Shazaam's topic in General Dog Discussion
No one is arguing , Shazaam - lots of us have had the surgery done on our dogs . Your post tells us nothing factual on which to even guesstimate a cost . Vet costs can depend on all sorts of things dog SIZE Vet or specialist Vet clinic or hospital extra test needed the level of damage to the knees what exact procedure is to be done ..(yes, there is more than one way to repair this condition) etc etc ..... $ 12,000 is a LOT of money - and to help your friend - more info would be most useful. That's all .... no argument - just the way this forum operates ..we try & give answers /help based on as many facts as we can... -
There may well be MUCH cheaper vets - but the surgery may also be much less professionally done .... I also suggest the owner take the dog for a second opinion ...
