  1. basically it will be a matter of teaching puppy to WATCH ... so my suggestions would be to reward every eye contact ... to only feed this way - not from a bowl...... that sort of thing . I hope she has told the breeder - this is important for a breeder to keep a record of :)
  2. Where would you suggest I look for one? The 'Mature Dog' section of dogzonline.com? That may help - or go to General Dog Discussion - and ask this as a new thread/post :) Explain that you are thinking of XYZ breed/s - and are seeking a young adult ? Once you decide on a breed - you may also find one on the pet rescue pages- or the pages of whatever breed it is :) an example- a Goldie rescue page HERE a Westie Rescue page , HERE Good luck :)
  3. good for you in doing research :) Sounds as if the dog will be in your parents' care a LOT . This means that they also have a say in the breed- accommodation, house rules, all that stuff ..Something to consider ! THEY will be the ones who have to cope with a piddling pup inside --- the runs to the vet , the chewing of stuff .... Would you be willing to search for a young , but not puppy dog ? That way you and your parents would stand a better chance of a dog slotting in to the household with less drama ...
  4. How exciting!! are you a first timer? will dog be indoors or outdoors mostly? do you have kids? What activities will you & dog be doing? ("walks" don't count , as they are pretty much essential;) ) What is it you love about each breed you mentioned? Do they have anything in common you like? Oh - and if you want a puppy who is healthy and from a family which has been well bred by an ethical and caring breeder- you may have to wait longer than the 3/4 months to get what will suit you best :)
  5. trust me - a 2 litre icecream container full of water & goodies , if placed in a large bowl in the shade will last a bit longer than an hour - and longer than a frozen coconut. making them in soft drink bottles I haven't heard of that idea - how is the dog going to chew & lick the food out ? ;)
  6. maybe make her an iceblock or two ? get an icecream container // 3/4 fill it with water ..and stir in a smidgin of a stock liquid or powder- just a very little . slice/chop some apple/carrot/a little coconut, and mix into teh water . add several pieces of kibble she likes, and a few small treat things - whatever she normally has :) Freeze overnight, and leave for her.
  7. he may well have an infection now - Vet visit first thing sounds a plan for now ....... darn dewclaws .... when they go wrong , they do so properly .
  8. One who 'does' a lot of whelping too. Agreed with this. I imagine any old vet wouldnt know too much about this as its not too common. Hmmm..way back in a previous life, we had enquiries from folks going on holidays , or shows ..and , yes, the vet prescribed a hormone which, as soon as it was stopped , let the bitch come into season - so not suitable for this situation. ..as he just wants her to NOT cycle for 12 mths or so ....
  9. The best idea would be to speak with a vet, methinks ?
  10. denali - the pants don't really work all that well ...
  11. Sorry - didn't realise he was short a dog ...

  13. he can always do what we have done forever - lock the bitch in a floored/roofed pen with supervised exercise , for 6 weeks a year . Surely he can manage for that short time?y brother's dogs can be worked with in season bitches for short times ..they know to concentrate on work , luckily. Accidents do happen .... with silent seasons..breakdown of security - but all in all - the locking away of a bitch does work.
  14. This is a hard one .... I'm sorry you need to think about it .
  15. worrying - hope all is well this morning - and perhaps suggest to your folks that it may work out cheaper to let her inside, away from nasties ;)
  16. So - has he twisted the nail off the nailbed? twisted the whole claw?Did it bleed much? i don't quite understand , sorry. if he's reasonably happy , I go with what the vet said . I agree with you - if he needs a GA .. is there anything else which could be done as well, perhaps? teeth/ear clean ... ? Our working dogs often do dewclaws ..and depending how loose they get , I have found that a really good run on thick grass , where the dog is fanatically chasing a toy/prey/another dog may help ;) They nail gets caught, adrenaline stops any pain ..and bingo :) then all that's needed is keeping it clean until it heals. ( we are a LONG way from a vet ..and our dogs are tough - and strong)
