  1. oh! :0 snook - hadn't seen that until you mentioned it - thanks!
  2. two members of 'our' apostlebird family . The family were keeping me company in the garden this morning - and these found a very dried up something . photo uncropped , and taken with my old pentax, and 35 yr old lens ..... all manual settings..and a lot of good luck :)
  3. The J's are both looking so well & happy. ! here's hoping the hand mends ok .
  4. the camera isn't working at present ..... or there would have been pics, trust me! it was just so odd - he was not trying to get in close or anything, and his tongue was lolling /tail wagging , much like when he runs with the 'pack' .... Hamlet would have been barking/lunging/biting and serious faced .... Don reminded me a bit of Pepe le Pew ! and it was NOT intentional , believe me .
  5. Don enjoys running /chasing . This morning I missed an old man euro (wallaroo) on our hill - and the black beast was off! I really don't think he has evil intent - unlike hamlet , who would bite /kill Anyhow as Don's ears seem to NOT work when his legs are busy ..I just watched the two of them for a while ..Euro going at a good pace - not flat out panic ..and Don behind . Then Don in front . Then euro slacked off ..so Don went & smelled the flowers Then they were side by side .... then Don broke off and came home , eyes shining , and tail going .... The euro was up on the rocky outcrop by then - no doubt happy to be alone again . *sigh*
  6. our bitches are entire ..and season time is such a juggling act ! the boys howl ..the girls howl ... and that's just one joy .
  7. thanks for the explanation :) I know what you mean ....
  8. Lots of thinking - just remember - she is NOT a person . A four foot fence is inadequate for most dogs - let alone a bitch in season ( yes, the females will go where the urge takes them!) Speying ,after a bitch has grown up is a way of keeping pet management easier/stopping surplus pups/removing any chance of pyometra /ovarian cancer . A bitch in season cannot be walked anywhere around your house - as dogs will follow the scent home! Bitches pee extra- in advertising their status . they often have temperament changes during a season ... they can have a phantom pregnancy afterwards For 3 weeks you will have a bitch who might smell more than usual , who will pee little bits everywhere ..who may drip a bloody fluid ... who will attract the attention of neighbourhood dogs (and bitches) Tubal ligation means she will still have seasons/be attractive etc etc - just won't get pregnant ... To manage a lab in season - ideally she would be a good inside dog - in a secure room with no low windows that could be jumped through! A secure outdoor run is a wonderful thing - concrete floor /wire mesh walls and roof ..with a shelter . Takes away all the worry if you are at work or whatever ... You are a good owner in thinking things thru :)
  9. ha! She has trained you that noise means freedom ! OOPS . persevere with pen . let her out when she is quiet . feed her in pen ..play with her ONLY in pen ..everything GOOD happens in pen ( except for toilet rewards ) yes- she will probably get noisier now , because hey, it WORKED last time ;)
  10. :) remember to use some word/s you are happy to use at a show/in a park / somewhere amongst non-dog owners ;)
  11. I don't think it's one of those things you can specifically diagnose just by a simple test. Our neuro specialist told us diagnosis was done via symptoms and ruling out everything else with blood tests, urinalysis, snake bite tests etc. A final test would of been to do a very costly spinal tap but regardless of what the result was the treatment would of been the same, so they thought there was no point doing it anyway. Ok .. thank you :) I was just wondering if it was that disease..and not a result of an injury maybe acquired in kennels or something? Hope she continues to improve - and is bouncing very soon!
  12. you need to WATCH her like a hawk - no time out of your reach ..and , if you need to in teh early stages- carry her out ... say "toilet"... or "hurry" ..pick a word ... and say ONLY that, until she goes - then lots of praise- a little game , or a treat .. repeat, repeat . Definitely use a leash as soon as you have gotten her used to it ...
  13. How was she diagnosed ? I am presuming they did Xrays/blood tests & whatever else? Just wondering what led them to this diagnosis?
  14. Ask STEVE ..then, if he suggests it , choose a veterinary behaviourist .
  15. those eyes.......................... :)
  16. if she were mine , I would cut it shorter - to JUST shorter than her muzzle - still can't damage anything - but it would be much easier to live with/in :)
  17. didn't you notice this bit ?Talking about chi's ? <<mum's very partial to the breed and it's the only breed she's ever owned, she lost her beloved Bobby 12 mths ago and she's now ready for another>>
