Poodle With Itchiness - Tried Everything
persephone replied to NatalieC's topic in General Dog Discussion
:) First thing I would suggest is a diet change . try a grain free /artificial colour free diet ... also check yr garden for wandering dew plants ..and take note of where she pokes her face otherwise ... I am sure you will get lots more informed comments to help :) -
Quite often we have blind blue heelers - koolies with blue eyes .....

Thanks hadn't thought of this a will ask the vet and see what he thinks it wouldn't be a common thing ..but while the blood is being tested ..it may as well have a tox screen too! Did the vet consider anti coagulant rodenticides as a cause? Are /were the dogs on any treatment , eg : vit K to stop the bleeding ? Obviously being of the same breeding , a genetic problem is entirely possible ..however, lots of other things need investigating as well . Don't just let the vet say "they had/have a clotting problem" and leave it at that !! As said previously , you NEED TO KNOW . is it lifelong , do you need to beware of injuries ? is it getting better since that episode ? LOTS of questions for the vet ! My link have a read here, too :)

NOT OUR DOGS - but still awful ...
-
we only use BIG CHEESE ..it has a very high safety margin - according to their statistics , a dog needs to eat around one kilo of it for a fatal dose , unlike some others, where 5 grams will be fatal . Anyhow, we've been using it for 3 years ..in every room , shed, outbuilding .The aviary /chookpen ...everywhere . No problems noted , and mice numbers reduced from a small town population , to the odd migrant . I was not using any baits for fear of losing animals ...but am very happy with this one :) Of course , baits need to be placed in secure containers, or under floors/in ceilings, in cages hung on trees/walls .. but I use this brand with complete confidence . the problem with BROMETHALIN is that is causes brain swelling - it acts in a different way to 'normal' poisons. Eaten in quantity ..it becomes fatal in just a few hours !!! TOMCAT is the only one I know of with this ingredient .
-
did you lose more than one? it wasn't OUR dogs :) it was someone we know ... he only had two ..now he has none .he thought the baits were safe in the laundry ...
-
Sorry to hear of that Was a diagnosis made ? Could the dogs have eaten something to have that effect ..or had any herbal or other medication ? The first stop would be the breeder of your dogs :) They will be able to fill you in as to what diseases they test for , and if there are incidences oh haemophilia in previous generations . They need to be told anyhow, if you haven't already ...
-
Yes, it was awful . Dogs were OK at bedtime last night - gone this morning
-
Ok - if you know about BROMETHALIN - stop reading . I had not heard of it until today when someone lost both their dogs overnight as a result of said dogs eating rat baits in the laundry of their house . BROMETHALIN can cause brain swelling . Ataxia, tremors and seizures are apparently present . In high doses it is fast acting . One of the dogs was Don's father - RIP "Dog" . The lab part of him seems to have been his downfall ...gutsing mouse baits We use the BIG CHEESE baits ..they contain DIFENACOUM , which has a high safety margin . from the B C page : For example, a Rat would need to eat only a small amount of The Big Cheese Difenacoum bait to be fatal, however a dog would need to eat well over 1 kilogram of The Big Cheese Bait.

9 Week Old Staffy Puppy Not Eating And Underweight
persephone replied to Darby's topic in Puppy Chat
if he's still not eating happily ... I would suggest a second opinion . is he drinking/peeing OK now? Did the vet show you how to check for dehydration? Don't change food quickly .. and , until you find out what the problem is , try & avoid extremely fatty/oily foods . A tummy unused to handling even 'normal' food in a decent quantity just needs 'baby' type - simple and plain ...obviously meat has some fat in - that's essential :) -
:) glad the vet visit went ok , and hope the painkillers will give you both a good night :)

BBQ chicken is great :) I'm surprised the vet didn'[t suggest something like NUTRIGEL .. it's a tasty paste which can be of help to ill and convalescing animals .... Drinking is more important . make some chicken soup (NO ONION or salt) and see if he'll drink some :) scrambled egg? Nature's gift canned food ... -
What a worry for you , sars - no bad back experience here , but hope the vet can be of help - you know the routine ..no jumping or steps , keep her warm ..maybe a wheat pak on her back to relax the muscles ? Oh - and rescue remedy for you both ;)

"snipers" in helicopters!! They need one decent HUNTER, on foot ,preferably with patience and stealth , a noisy bitch in season ..and the understanding of how these dogs think .... After the trauma these two dogs have endured - why on earth would they pop their heads up to watch a chopper?!! ANY motor noise will send them down a hole very smartly .

Such a happy and thriving family :) Occasionally here a litter of 'yellow dogs' appears , when properties miles from anywhere have a bitch in season- and as they have only bitches, don't worry about cages etc ... -
..and what a shame we didn't know this at the start of the thread i wish you well in your journey .
