  1. hi :) OK. First, find an excellent and ethical Akita breeder !!! make sure you get a pup whose line has been well though out, and tested for any hereditary problems > THEN - the breeder should be your first call for all things Akita :) They should help you with diet etc , as they are the 'experts' Dog food is as individual as your dog. One size does NOT fit all :) Research the breed , and perhaps have a read here as well :) LINK- lots of discussion about feeding puppy Akita LINK- link dedicated to Akitas on D O L
  2. our dogs do this often - so hopefully it's just a case of being a bit surprised ...
  3. "'ermmm yep!" anyhow .. some discussion by locals HERE and a video here :
  4. :) It was a trip with a difference !
  5. 'dusting the dog' playing with the iphone this morning ... dear Molly ...
  6. Oh ..and what bones does this pup get to chew ? I bet a nice frozen chicken carcass or frozen whole turkey neck would keep him busy ;) ( and feed him at the same time ! One game I would teach asap is the 'swap' , or 'gimme' game . I use this a lot. puppy is given/picks up a toy - NOT a bone or deer antler /whatever . You have a treat in your hand .. make sure he sees/smells it ,and use whichever word you like to IMMEDIATELY replace the toy he drops with the treat . Pick up the toy..and play with him ..happy, happy :) repeat, repeat, repeat ....ONLY when he has something in his mouth. Later on ....it should mean that he will reconsider stuff he has picked up , whether it be a shoe, or a dead lizard :)
  7. I swear by the use of a nice wide/ or padded flat collar when training ..it's a way of communicating ..and it's the way I was taught, over 50 yrs ago ... it's no use giving corrections if a dog hasn't learned a particular action ... pups respond to fun/interaction and contact ... I very much agree with dididog's comments about the communication aspect ... I think you will find this article valuable :) PUNISHING PUPPIES
  8. Anticipation ... can easily become an obsession. make her food up when she is outside or somewhere ...
  9. and here is where Dulcie, Bo, Indi & Wags were ... LINK HERE ABC Goldfields News site Wags, Indi , & The Boss .
  10. Well, now  there is an offer for you, Canetoad.
  11. She and the other 3 were happy just to go straight to their beds last night, that's for sure!! the terrain over there was SO rough ..red, rocky , shale uplifts everywhere ... poor Dulcie seems to have bruised feet ..no pad damage or anything ..just a bit tender sore . I guess it feels a bit like the day after wearing maseur sandals for hours the first day!! ;)
  12. Yesterday , The Boss came home after 2 weeks over in WA chasing feral goats . Here is Dulcie ...worn out .. :)
  13. oh :) i hope his health is OK ..and that he gets over the shock well . Great work from all concerned- may the thieves be prosecuted soon!
  14. THIS THREAD contains a lot of discussion for you to read :) Unfortunately, it doesn't deal with a brachy dog and hot weather ... yes, it is VITAL that your pup be kept cool - and remember - cooling gel mats are terrific..but an unsupervised pup will probably chew it . With your toys etc too, remember , your pup will have a flatter face , and may not be able to use/work some of them as well :)
  15. Try beef tendons or pizzle sticks :) Also make iceblocks ..ice cream container (large) 3/4 fill with water ..drop in a sliced apple , a few bits of jerky , some meat chunks and a chicken wing. Freeze for 24 hrs ... put it outside ..leave him to it!
  16. Now would that make to stop and take a second look? it needed a second look - first look I was several inches too high!!! She looked quite disproportionate , but was fit & friendly & healthy ...
  17. ............ righttttt............. Looking forward to the results :)
