Our New Rescue Dog-what Breed Do You Think He Could Be?
Janba replied to hippie1969's topic in General Dog Discussion
Do labs carry the tri gene, I've never heard of a tri lab. He needs both parents to carry it to be a tri. -
The same thing happened at EP last year with a purses and mobile phones etc being taken. They caught one of the offenders but not much of the stolen property from memory. They took stuff from cars in the herding area as well as the show area. My car was unlocked with my mobile in full view but it is so old they left it.

You own have 50% of the dogs entered and still not win HIT . A lot of our ANKC herders also do 3 sheep trials, utility trials and yard dog trials. I am the only one of our advanced people who hasn't got my act together to do an official 3 sheep trial though I have done unofficial ones and had a go at unofficial yard dog trials, which I really enjoy despite not having a dog really suited to yard work.
-
In that case congratulations I learn to comprehend what I read

If Weez is trialling Started A on sheep why did you do a HIT on ducks? Just curious.

I would love to but there isn't one to my knowledge in NSW. It might be worth travelling for! I was going to fly to the SA one originally, and was actually really looking forward to a weeekend away, but now it's been moved to WA, so no kid-free jaunt for me Fortunately we've had enough interest to get it up and going here, but no-one from the ANKC scene, which surprised me. I don't know if we'll get ISDS-style trials up and running in WA again, but maybe I'll get to travel for those... I don't know how advanced WA is in B course trialing. In NSW you would get the ANKC interest - we have 5 people (counting our ACT ring in) trialing advanced B, the course most like an ISDS, and more starting to train the drive to move up out of started. I love the B course which is very sim ilar to an ISDS course at advanced level.

Today we had the entrance exam for the herding judges training scheme. Now the serious stuff begins

If you look at the show and trials guide on their website, http://dogsnsw.org.au/activities-a-events/shows-and-trials-guide.html, and decide what shows you are interested in I am sure some kind DOLer could forward the schedule information.

Is the stud dog experienced and what is he telling you? A good stud dog knows when a bitch is ovulating and the time of ovulation is important not the number of days into the season.

I have only had a dog pee on someone intentionally once. I was having an argument with the woman and my male border colie looked at her and peed on her. I think he may have been siding with me

It needs to be performed at an ANKC herding trial. Trials are entered the same way you enter shows, usually on the same form with Instinct Certificate put in the space for trial class.
-
The owner and handler just need to be Dogs Vic members the same as for a show. The instinct test they have to have seen sheep before the test but it can be performed on lead. It is just to show the dog has a sustained interest in stock.

This is a very good video about human-dog relationships - Dogs Decoded. You have to fast forward to the 3.15 minute point for the documentary to start.

Dogs also pick up from our emotions. If you are stressed, angry or upset about something a dog will pick up on that and react accordingly. When I have had a dog PTS it is because the time is right and it is the best option. I may have been devestated but I have known it it best and my dogs have gone peacefully.

This has to be the BEST three lines I have read on DOL this year. Absolutely gold, but so true. Second that!! Sooo funny!!! Me 3

I think by anthromorphizing dogs you miss out on what wonderful animals they are as dogs. My dogs are my life but they are not human and never will be, nor would they want to be human. I can't move a sheep with my eyes, track a person by scent alone or even tell which cupboard in the kitchen is being opened from outside and I definitely don't enjoy the smell of dead things but my dogs can. My dogs are happy being dogs and they do sleep on the bed, lie on the lounge and are with me most of the time. My dogs are also calm, not anxious, know a what I mean when I say a large number of words and can read a huge amount of my body language but they are dogs and it is learnt behaviour.

I lost one of my dogs at an after hours vet hospital. The care they gave her and the compassion they showed to me was second to none even though they had never seen me or her before. There was nothing they could have done to save her but they tried and gave her comfort in her last hours. Please don't condemn all vets by one bad experience.

Ad I Saw... Isn't This Illegal?
Janba replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
We've had it up for less than a week, and don't worry, I'll let all future cats and dogs die at the hands of the pounds!! Happy?? I would rather my dog end up at a pound rather than with a rescue. How would a rescue describe the breed of the dark dog in my avatar? At least at a pound I have a chance to go and look physically for him if his microchip wasn't found. One of my worse night mares is my dogs getting lost and I want the best chance to get them back. ETA those ads are so wrong on so many levels. -

Maybe they were looking for human food and fed Ziggynto keep him quiet?. Other then that I have ni idea and if it was me I would be a bit worried so maybe keep Ziggy locked in at night.

Sometimes General is not a very nice place, but it's worth it to keep posting until you get enough cred to get into the secret section. ;) Some threads on DOL make me cringe and others do have a warm fuzzy feeling. The secret section is definitely nicer, though it could be a bit over the top when Midol was around

Trialling In A Walking Frame?
Janba replied to freundhund's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Obedience judges do do modified heeling patterns for disabled competitors - less fat pace etc. I would think you need to apply to your controlling body for permission to trial in a walking frame as I know approval had to be given for some one to herd in a wheel chair. -
Have his growth plates closed and has he stopped growing? They do continue to mature to about 4 but it is filling out rather growing. The food aggression can be managed and may not be hormonal.

More than 3/4 of instructing in any discipline is teaching the handler how to do it - whether it is obedience, agility, herding or just plain good dog ownership and manners. A lot of instructors at obedience clubs IMHO do not have the resources to do this whether because of class size and structure, time or lack of knowledge. At least the woman is trying and can laugh about her problems.
