especially to the bolded bits I also don't let people use him who I know won't be able to handle a pup of his. My dog gets used for performance breeding and while most his pups will do well in the right pet homes I am very careful when the bitch owner wants to keep a pup and I know that they are not capable of handling a high drive dog - when they fail it always seems to be the stud dogs fault not the handlers. So far the bitch owners have known the pups potentials and have placed them according to this. I have no special clauses in my stud contract. With people I know and trust the stud fee is payable on a live viable litter and with people I don't really know stud fee is payable at the time of mating and refundable if there is no litter. I have no clauses on what happens to the pups - that is up to the bitch owner.

In NSW the owner of the dog need to be a member of DogsNSW but doesn't have a prefix. At the time of service she needs to give the bitch owner a signed service certificate that can be otained from you states CC. She would also need to have him hip and elbow scored (not sure if these are mandatory for GR) and any other health tests usual in the breed. A stud dog needs to have something special to offer the bitch owner, whether it is oustanding comformation, outstanding performance ability etc. The dog needs to be able to improve on the bitch is no matter what you are breeding for. There are far more good male dogs than there are potential stud dogs. The other things she needs to consider is can she house visiting bitches, can she assist if there are problems with the mating, does she know a good stud master if there are problems. Its often not just throwing 2 dogs together in the back yard. The only place I advertise my dog is Dogzonline, most enquiries I get are from people who know him or about him or word of mouth from other BC people. I really find having people use him is a bit of a pain as the bitches are never ready to mate when it is convenient for me and I do my homework on the bitches.

A desexed dog can tie with a bitch. ETA Arousal is not neccessarily sexual and testaterone related. Go and read Teebs threads about the problems she has with Atlas in this issue.

To me it is quite complicated and depends on where you are hoping to go with your dogs. If you are a show breeder then it is trying to breed a dog as close to the standard as possible while still maintaining maximum health, soundness, temperament etc with the required health tests. If you have a breed that still does its original work and are breeding for that working ability then it is breeding the best working dog you can while maintaining health, soundness etc but the selecting for conformation becomes less important so long as the dog is structurally sound for the work required and has the best possible working ability. Performance breeders breeding for dog sports can come somewhere in the middle. It really doesn't matter whether you are breeding show dogs or working dogs or performance dogs so long as you are trying to improve your dogs with each litter your breed.

I have one of those. I just walked past the water bowl and stood in a puddle of water ;) I know which dog it is but how do you stop one dog from making a watery mess, I don't know. I just mop up the puddles when I find them and keep the water bowl on a surface that isn't very slippery when wet.

You should start breeding these Steve, they will do the job for you (and fast with it! :-D ) I have a backyard full of those.

Dogs That Can On Be Handled By One Person
Janba replied to aussielover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Cole is like this if I get someone else to work in on sheep. If I'm there he will work for some people but comes back to me when he thinks the jobs done even if it isn't whereas if I'm not in sight he will work well for those people. There are other people he won't even stay with if they try to work him. -
I take Cole to work sometimes but not the other 2. My office is off the showroom an Cole will lie quietly under my desk or next to me and ignore anyone in the showroom - the other 2 want to go and do the meet and greet and that can be a bit intimidating for non dog lovers. The boys in the factory all like me bringing him in as well and he get visitors at lunch time etc. I like taking a dog to work but I do fel that if you do the dog shouldn't interfere with your work or the business.

On the money the vet practice owes often from an overdraft or a business loan.

Just remember that you will need to take it slowly with a young pup. Its really just getting them used to stock, teaching them to stay off their stock and letting their instincts mature 5 minutes at a time. ETA For insurance prurposes the first Sat of the month you need to belong to the NSW Herding Association ($25 pa + joining fee no charge for training). All other Sat you mut be a member of DogsNSW (training is $5). Sundays you need to be a member of the Australian Stockdog Club ($28 + $5 joining training $3) and the ASDC is more a 3 sheep/yard dog training but will still start a dog correctly. If you are a DogsNSW member come on the 12 March and see what you think before you join any of the clubs.

I would wait till she is about 4 months old. You can start earlier but she would only be able to do a few minutes at a time. If you are willing to be patient and not over do it bring her at 3 months. Training starts on the first weekend in March, both Sat and Sun so come and have a look and bring her.

For those of you who are trialling the NSW State Herding Titles are being held on the long weekend in June. A, B & C courses, all trial levels, are being run each day and we have 2 different judges so titles are possible. I will post more info soon.

You could be like me and duck trials . Cole only has only see ducks a few times outside of trials so our training is in the trial ring. He's not that pretty on ducks but he does improve every time he works them and now has intermediate passes on them. We no longer have ducks in NSW to trial on so any further passes will have to be obtained interstate. I would try it because you never know if there are going to be more cattle trials.

Contact The Siberian Husky Club of NSW - they do sledding days. Sledding is about to become a recognized sport with the ANKC and the rules etc are in the process of being drafted.

I've used kelp after an injury with great success. Not feeding from plastic or not having plastic water bowls can help if it from an allergy to the plastic. ETA Reactions to plastic can lighten the nose pigmentation.

Should Groomers Be Licensed? Qualified?
Janba replied to Danielle's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a similar experience with one of my border collies who had always been good to groom. I got lazy and took him to a groomer when he was shedding to have the dead coat stripped back. He came back looking lovely. Next time I tried to brush him he gave a few warnings then airsnapped at me. Its taken about 2 yrs to get him to the stage he will happily let me brush him every where but his baggy drawers and tail. Who knows what they did to him but it must have really hurt or frightened him and it was a qualified groomer. I would now only use a groomer who is personally recommended to me by someone I know and wouldn't worry about qualifications. -
ANKC or NSWSDWA registered. My dog has been used to breed performance dogs not show dogs (though he has produced pups that wouldn't disgrace you in the show ring) so I look at not only at the bitch but why the breeder wants to use my dog and what they hope to gain. I have knocked back more people than have used him for various of reasons.

Mine will sunbake in the early morning but not during the day. I don't turn the aircon on till late and then only to cool the bedroom down otherwise I just use fans. All 3 of mine find cool spots in the house to lie.
