I have never seen a fighting dog used in a role with Police or security guards. They aren't as controllable/trainable as dogs such as the German Shepherd. My brother was in the Army in QLD and good mates with an MP on the dog squad of the Army base guards. He said the level of self-control those dogs have is amazing. He saw a training scenario one day - in a bite suit one of the MP's ran from a dog that was sent to detain him. Just before the dog reached the guard in the bite suit, the dogs' handler issued an order to stop the chase and to return to his side. It did so immediately, without hesitation. Bet a pitbull wouldn't have that kind of restraint. Why do you think they aren't used in this role? That recall of the attack is the result of training not something that the dog is born with. I think you would be hard pressed to call any hunting, herding, gundog etc dogs off without training.

I hope everything is Ok with Amber.

Does Anyone Have Experence With Mast Cell Tumours?
Janba replied to Miz J's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to hear this. My dally had a mast cell tumour diagnosed and removed when she was 12 months old. It was caught early and removed with clean margins. She is now 9 and has had no re occurance. Search Ollies story in the health forum. You will find a lot of info there about mast cell tumours. Good luck. ETA link http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/125943-mast-cell-cancer/page__hl__ollie -
The herding trialling season has finished for the year in NSW with our last trials for the year this weekend. I finished Coles HXBs title and got his herding championship from A course and am on the way to his versatile herding championship. The stop at the top of the cast has improved in training but still almost non existent at trials

Glad you had a good day. Its always nice when they work well. Jazz's half sister, Sukie, got her PT title today. The first of Cole's offspring to get a title.

Unfortunate accident. The pup is still a baby, who would have been hurt and had a fright, and will act like a baby not an adult dog.

I had a BC who developed this when he got older. It can be life threatening as they can't concentrate their urine so can dehydrate very quickly in hot weather if they don't have access to water. They also seem to need to tiolet frquently during the night for the same reason. With Boot I just made sure there was plenty water available and that he always had access to outside because of the frequent peeing. There are treatments but I decided not to treat because of age and he lived to 13.

It was a long day and I left before the end. B course was ugly - he's getting worse but did manage a score of 83. The shed was one of his best after not managing it for the last 4 trials. He has been working really well in training but just wouldn't listen today though I suppose when looking at the score sheet he was heading for a qualification in the 90s when he reached 5.

Congratulations on your passes. Your girls are going very well. Cole was a sh***t. He did get a pass at advanced B and the only nice part was the shed. I retired him in advanced A when he decided to try to drive the sheep from 5 to the Y shute. Rule now is "you ignore me, you don't work" and I'll walk out immediately. He only had 3 small offlines to that point but as I don't need any more advanced A passes I am aiming now for perfection

Lovely judge you will have too. Sue has an Aussie. Good luck.

Why is it impressive that it was a Rottie? They are a herding breed after all. Sorry but it has been one of my pet peeves that everyone is "OMG a rotti herding". A non herding breed would be an OMG moment. All the Rotties have been nice workers that I have seen. Sherlot I have been to comps and have pretty much had the only border collie there! Lots of variety of dogs in Victoria doing herding. its impressive as hardly anyone trains them to be herding champs... and I'm the only one in wa with border collies We have a few lovely working rotties here in NSW. The rottie in Vic was the State Herding Champion and won the award from Started A, with some lovely rounds from what I heard, not the ANKC title of herding champion.

The ticking is a very common marking in working border collies and doesn't neccessarily mean there is any ACD present as are short coats. I have no idea the mix.

I am so very sorry to read this RIP Benson

How could I register my rescue dog Digby, who is 60 kg of mastiff muscle with the working Kelpie association My other rescue dog is a non-pedigree Great Dane so I would imagine having trouble registering her with a working dog association. I love my rescue dogs and will be having more in the future. Lucky I'm not in QLD! Quite simply you cannot because they are not working Kelpies or a working breed, The same as if you had a Peddigree Great Dane you couldn't enter a Chihuahua club show it's not the right breed. The Working dog associations produce Pedigrees for their members who breed Kelpies for example, from Working Lines. An Associate registered dog can compete in everything a Sporting Registered dog can except for Herding unless they go the step further. An associate register dog can compete in Herding provided it is an apparent mix of eligable herding breeds The wording of the rules is . They shouldn't have to do a test other than the Herding Instinct Test that every dog who competes in herding must do. The tricky part comes in assessing what the dogs are. Some of the working dog registries (IE the sheepdog workers associations) do accept crossbreeds but they must be crosses of the breeds they allow to compete in their trials such as kelpie x border collies. These are usually registered as station bred or similar without a pedigree.

Someone told me they thought Cole had all the requirements for his herding championship so I have checked. Cole will now be known as HCh Cole. I really should pay more attention to his places

I was talking to Sue (the judge) later and she said your girl worked beautifully I didn't see her runs
-
A little brag from me today - Cole got his HIT from advanced A so now only needs 1 more first place to get his herding championship.

I am really sorry for your loss Jules, He sounded a lovely dog from your posts. Fly free Brock. I had something similar happen to me years ago. A neighbour put a box of snail bait on top of the fence (I was on acres then) and it got knocked over and some spilt into my yard and my dally ate it. I would never have known where it came from if he hadn't told me when I asked.

As above - ee red masks the expression of the tri gene. The red (or tan) with black with black in the coat are sable. The Sable gene is located at the same locus as the tri gene and is dominant to the tri gene.

You don't have to be a registered breeder to own a stud dog just a member of your states CC. As the owner of a dog that is used at stud the dog does have to have something to offer the bitch owners other than just being main register and health tested. The dog should improve on the bitch whether it is for conformation or performance.
-
Rally-O is becoming an ANKC recognised sport as of 1/1/12 with titles etc so dogs will need to be registered either on MR/LR or AR or SR to compete in official trials after that date. Unofficial trials dogs shouldn't need to be registered.
-
Regulations re tthe associate register would vary from state to state. I imagine the dog would have to be deregistered from the MR/LR then regestistered on the AR From DogsNSW registraion regulations and I think a person would have to write to the Board asking for permission for it to be done and giving a good reason as to why the person wanted it done. No much help I know.

I remember something about the Border Collie people having to decided whether the breed was Aussie or Scottish? So you might be correct. The first border collie standard was written in NZ and they may also have had the first shows featuring them as well. ANKC takes the credit for "developing" the BC but it is debatable.

I hope Piper is OK an congratulations on her first pass. I love B course even if Cole didn't manage the shed at his last 3 trials (bl**dy flighty glued together merinos lol).
