  1. A prefix is placed before a dogs name, a suffix after a dogs name and an affix can be either.
  2. It took 3 attempts for my dogs papers to correct despite the fact that the import certificate was correct. I have also returned his papers several times for correction after titles gained. These day I pick them up and just hand them back if wrong . ETA at one stage they had a dog as his grandfather who was younger than his father.
  3. Someone had some really long videos on YouTube (I think), worth a search. Blissful. It is. When you watch a good dog patrolling a graze or the road you realise the completely different work styles. Beside the GSDs we have a very promising Belgian training at the moment
  4. Aussies, while an upright breed, do work similarly to BCs, Kelpies, Koolies etc unlike the tending (if that is the right term) breeds like GSDs and Belgiums. I have seen the imported HGH dogs work here in Sydney. They do seem to have a lot more instinct than most of the show line dogs who do training on C course. Camille imported the bitch in whelp and she has kept most of the resulting pups.
  5. DNA testing would be on the dog saliva on the wounds to determine which dogs was involved in the attack or if both dogs were.
  6. Mine have had no choice but to learn dally play as Mishka was here first and is the alpha bitch. But I agree with you - they do prefer to play with other BCs and it is like they instinctively know the game.
  7. Yes my point too... But I still want to know how a high DI will affect different breeds & I don't think this information is available.... I have 5 dogs here scored with both systems & only 1 has a good Penn hip score???? But all 5 have AVA scores between - 1 & 5 total????? From a breeding point this is hard????? As one always wants to do the best.... Very confused... A link that might interest you on how sublaxation may actually help a BC or similar dog in its intended work. http://stilhope.com/writings/hips.html My BC who does primarily work sheep has a score of 1-1 with the score being in thet acetabular fossa (SP), which is normally associated with wear and tear. Has he got this score from the damage caused by twisting and turning when working? Not Pennhip I know.
  8. Both my border collies have learnt to play like a dalmatian but still play like BCs when we do the mass BC play group at training but can't cope with Aussie shepherd body slamming. Dogs do adapt play styles to the dogs they are playing with. The Aussies they have played with have joined the mass BC play group and it is almost like WTF we're BCs, play like a BC.
  9. Cole To get his VHCH and if D course is introduced try for his advanced title in that and maybe a VHCHX (dreaming) The demented dally is comimg out of retirement to have a go at Rally-O and will probably try Cole and Moss at it too.
  10. This also happens with tailed breeds......along with many other breeding disorders such as missing limbs, deaf/blind pups, pups with abnormal conformation etc. Question to you sangrubber....from your post you are less than impressed of this find....what do think will solve the problem other than baning in-breeding? It has nothing to do with inbreeding. It has to do with the fact that it is claimed that pups that are homozygous for the bob tail gene die in utero so are never born.
  11. Lovely aan should be true for every dog.
  12. Is this the central Asian Shepherd Dog? Maybe you need to talk to someone like lilli.
  13. One of the things with a male baby puppy is that it doesn't have to have its testis descended. If allowed in the challenge line up it would be theoretically possible for a monorchid pup to get its championship now the requirement for 25 points being obtained over 12 months has been lifted (as I am sure I read recently.) Edited to change 6 months to 12 months.
  14. That is lovely Gayle - it bought tears to my eyes.
  15. You have done a lot to educate people on the correct pronunciation and I know you are pleased when pronounced correctly (as I found out at Dogs on Show) The problem with some breed pronunciations is that unless someone is fortunate enough to hear people pronounce it correctly they usually only guess the best they can. whats Dogs on Show ? The Spring Fair ? Sorry I bet I will regret asking lol\ pssst its in my sig here tooo! It might have been the Spring Fair, it was down at the herding. I don't normally venture up to the breed rings so sometimes get forgetful which event it is. Beautiful dogs.

  17. A lot of these posts are the sort of thing that makes people think that purebred dog owners are elitist. If some one pronounces an O instead or or as or a g sound in a name is that really so bad. Calling it a Burmese instead of a Bernese is not a big sin - a least they recognise it as a breed. What right have we got to expect the public to get breed names right when the ANKC misspelt one of my breeds on its website for the standard and the state CC misspelt in on their stand at Pets Expo a few years ago? The breed is also often misspelt here on Dol by regulars. There is no O in Dalmatian.
  18. Not all dogs with a genetically high drive for what they are bred for show that drive a 6 weeks. They may show a potential for high drive but not necessarily express it. I have a dog that did not really look at sheep till he was 6 months old but when he "switched on" nothing was or is as important to him as sheep. He will work sheep with a bitch in season and ignore her while working - I've done it. His main problem is handler incompetence. From the time I got him as a pup I have been able to put him into "drive" with a tug toy, ball etc but it is nothing compared to his focus, desire and intensityto work as a sheepdog. It may have been different if I had been an agility or obedience competitor. It is not the same drive a working Mal but still an obsessive drive. His eldest pups are now just 18 months old and titled in 2 disciplines with very good results. Yes there are many variables, but personally I wouldn't hold my breath on a young pup that didn't display the desired drive in hope that it may come good in time over a pup that displayed on average what the good adults displayed at the same age unless of course it's trait factor occurring in a particular bloodline? I belong to groups and forums that have a lot of top international sheepdog trialers from different countries as members and the desire to see a sheepdog work at 6-8 weeks seems to be an Australian idiosyncracy. Overseas dog aren't often introduced to sheep till much older. It is nice to see that drive early but it is not always the case.
  19. Bitches Britches. They are pants you put on the bitch that have a slot for a sanitary napkin. They don't stop the necessity for vigilance in making sure that she cannot escape or the a dog can get to her but they do help with the blood spots and the cleaning. As Persephone said a bitch can be as bad as a dog in trying to mate so be careful and supervise her at all times or have her locked inside or in an escape proof run with a roof.

There is a working breed register. Just to say one is crossbreeding, outbreeding, line breeding unregistered xbreeds as working dogs is just little far out there for credibility.....don't you reckon? To what gain? There is already a recognised pure breed suitable for any ''work'' already. There is more than one working registry depending on the breed etc and crossing working dogs i.e. border collie x kelpie is not unknown when looking for certain traits in a working dog. This is very different to BYB DD to mke a profit from a litter.
  22. I have used heavy flow incontinence pads in a pair of "bitches britches" for an incontinent dog before and they have worked fine. The dog was a dally so bigger than a cav but maybe try a slightly lower flow pad I imagine with a dog who is weeing purposely that you would just need to change the pad when it was full.

    Savlon

I have been using "normal" saline as a wound flusher/wash, eye wash etc for years on my animals and myself with no ill effects and a lot of positive ones, but I do stick to the approximately the 0.9% concentration when I mix it myself which is about 1 level teaspoon to a litre of water. Seawater has a salt content of about 3.5% (google is a wonderful thing) which is a lot less than a tablespoon to a cup of water.

    Savlon

Normal saline is 0.9% so 9gms salt to a litre of water. I use a teaspoon of salt to a litre of warm water. Boil the water first. Too high a concentration on an open wound could be damaging. ETA you can buy bottles of sterile saline solution from most chemists
  25. Does he sit when he wants to on his own or just stands or lays down? He may have back or hip problem.
