  1. Oh no! I only just saw this! I would have loved to go Could I have missed out by any slimmer a margin? Did anyone go? was it good?

  3. Hi SD, Zig sounds exactly the same as Forge at training - his attention span is good, then non existent, then good again, then he's bored and sick of doing stuff 'on the spot'. Luckily, one of the clubs I go to is really having us focus on focus - it's okay to move around a bit to get focus back. The other he is still doing basic stuff in puppy class, but next month he's booked in to do a more structured obedience, so I'm not sure how we'll go there. I'd love to hear how you go building his focus and obedience. Sounds like you've got plenty of places to choose from - I'm in the wrong place to suggest any Good luck!
  4. I've taken Forge to a puppy run when he was 4 1/2 months old - it was only a 50 meter run and they go as slow as dictated by the pup, but Forge flew! He loved it and I'll definitely be making the monthly trip to give him a puppy run until he's old enough to compete.
  5. I'm a member of two obedience/agility clubs - soon to add another agility club. I've taken my pup Lure coursing, but haven't joined the club because he's too young for the proper stuff yet. So he will be getting Monday nights, Wednesday nights, Saturday mornings and once a month a Sunday. Wow. It seems like the future will be busy for us.
  6. Good advice from every one - tough it out. He will probably have good nights and you'll think 'Yes, we've cracked it... good nights sleeps from now on" and then bad nights and you think "Oh no, what did I do wrong? Why won't he go to sleep?!?" You'll make it in the end, just be consistent.
  7. He's a bit over 4 months now. We were planning to get him desexed at 6 months. He sort of cocked his leg the other day too - he was standing in long grass, so it wasn't on anything in particular. Just on the grass.
  8. As titled, is the 'appearance' of swollen Bulbus glandis related to any developmental stages? I've noticed them on my dal for the first time this evening when I came home. Luckily I've seen some other threads on "what are they!!!" so thankfully I haven't had to ask the same question. :D Are they related to sexual development? Is there a certain age/ development stage that they begin to show? Just curious.
  9. can I steal the thread slightly to ask approximately what the meat to bone ratio should be for the meaty bones? ie; how much meat on the bone. I'm feeding a mix at the moment like wings, thighs, quarter chook, every other day a soup bone (bone too big to eat) and once a week chook frames (stripped of most meat) etc, then mince for his other meal - does this sound like it would balance out or does the edible bone amount need to be more regular?

    Cheeky Puppy

Yup, they know how to take an opportunity to be a bit naughty. I know some thing's up when it's too quiet - but that doesn't work when they start out asleep!
  11. This was my first thoughts too - my ACDx girl would do that during play too, but now dogdude and K9 Force have me wondering if thats not be the case here.
  12. Thanks - I can be a bit of a worry wart
  13. How long after swallowing something would it take to cause an obstruction and how long after would you consider it a non-event? The plastic image on the front of Forge's tag has gone missing - so I'm not sure if it has been ingested or not. He is eating/drinking and going to the toilet like normal and I'm keeping an eye on him. If nothing happens in a couple of days, would it likely be fine?
  14. If he likes soft toys, maybe one of these Tuffie's Here is some photos of DOL users I got one for Forge and he loves it 'cos it squeaks.
  15. I can't help, but you might get more appropriate responses in the breeder's community forum - you can start a topic even if your not a registered breeder and comment in that thread, you just can't comment in ones you didn't start.
  16. That is an unnecessarily cute puppy. :D I've recently started toilet training my little fella too. If he hasn't been in a while and starts sniffing around more than normal, I'll take him out and won't come back in until he's done something. He's usually a little distracted when we go out for a bit, then he'll sniff around a bit more and finally go. I've been going out and walking around the yard in the rain so he'll hopefully think nothing of it too. It's a good idea to pay attention to how long after his meals until he has to poo so you know whether to wait for that too.
  17. I've had my new puppy for just over a week. The second day in he whined non stop at anything and nothing. His whining has been decreasing since, so it might just be a case of getting used to his new home and being without his litter mates. We've been doing our best to ignore any whining - it can be hard though when I have to make sure he doesn't have to go to the bathroom if he's inside, or if it might be his meal time... he still gets whiny when he's tired and is still running around like a goose.
  18. That's nice to know. We had a bee hive in an old bin when we bought our house, we had the bees relocated and still have 2 liters of their honey in the cupboard - I know a little pooch who's getting honey with his yogurt tonight.
  19. That could be a good idea. I'm not sure which neighbours cat it is, so can't really ring 'em, but if I go door to door asking if the cat in the cage is theirs I should be able to find out.
  20. Forge has found a spot in the garden where the neighbours cat likes to bury these friggin huge cow-pats-of-a-cat-turd. I've removed as much as I could find and put Forge's poo on top, which seems to have deterred him and hopefully the cat too. I'm praying.
  21. Thanks Ness, those links look GREAT! Leopuppy - what I meant was that he doesn't get the click and treat every time he sits for example (and click is always followed by treat when I do click). I've been doing things like telling him "Good Boy" and "yes" and requiring him to sit before the door is opened or he gets his meals. I've borrowed and read "power of positive dog training" by Pat miller and I'm trying to do it the way it's laid out in that book (from memory until I get my own copy). One of the Karen Pryor books is next.
  22. Thanks Leopuppy and ShellyBeggs, glad to know I'm not doing anything obviously wrong. I might just do praise and pats for toileting . I'm sort of trying to be generous yet sporadic with the clicking/treats so he won't expect them every time, while still trying to get him really into the clicker.
  23. I'm standing on the patio, trying to gently open the pack of training treats, then Riiip . Little treats go flying everywhere when the bag splits top to bottom. *sigh* Quickly pick up as many treats that are on the ground as possible. Luckily Forge didn't seem to realize that he could just do his own tour and just hoover them up. So I got most of them before he stopped following me around while I'm on all fours. Things went great after that. He's only almost 9 weeks old, so I'm not expecting too much to start with, just trying to lay some foundations until I get the hang of it. Clicking and rewarding when he would come to me and saying come while he was bounding towards me. I've clicked and rewarded him for peeing too. I was click and rewarding for sits and also said it a few times and he sat for me. Then we had a play session before I asked for more sits and rewarded for coming back to me. Is this the right way to start with a baby puppy? Naming, clicking and rewarding good behaviours that he offers?
