Hip Dysplasia ,i Don't Know What To Do...help
Sandra777 replied to bridie's topic in General Dog Discussion
See someone has suggested The Bloomin Vet - as you might be in the area consider hyrotherapy - right up the road at the Middle Road roundabout. A cup of that mixture - lucky she didn't grow into a Great Dane Best of luck, you may well be surprised what happens when she weighs what she ought to. -

Advice Please...puppy Apparently Dead After Illness
Sandra777 replied to Rubric's topic in General Dog Discussion
This sounds very strange to me. I would simply tell him that the papers must be returned to Dogs Vic (since that seems to be the rule) but that you would gladly supply him with a pedigree of the puppy (from one of the internet sites or breedmate or something), and a receipt saying what he bought (if you haven't already done so) but on both I would be clearly marking the pup's microchip number AND attaching a clear photo of it's markings. -
Is An American Staffordshire Terrier A Pitbull?
Sandra777 replied to jackie_a1's topic in General Dog Discussion
I made a comparison between the SBT and BULL TERRIER not Amstaff. -
Garlic is fine in sensible quantities. That list of things which will poison your dog is so over the top it's not funny. It's a list of things which have affected some dogs out of the whole population of dogs in the whole world. May as well say peanuts are toxic to people because a very very few people are severely allergic to them.

Grapes & Sultanas will affect some dogs - same as onions will affect some dogs. Try them on banana (some like the skins, some don't) and mine love whole apples - crunchy tennis balls

Thanks. I've gone with Supercoat because its what it was eating before at the breeders. Im not really sure of the difference between all the brands That's fine then - gives you 10-14 days breathing space tio do some research, evaluate how the puppy goes on Supercoat, other options etc etc etc. Is the breeder a long-term experienced ethical breeder? If so, they are a great source of information and probably know as much about how to best raise your puppy as anyone on here. The difference between cereal fillers and not is huge for some dogs, meaningless for others. Google, but don't believe every piece of hysteria you read on the internet Personally I raw feed.
-
Supercoat isn't the best there is but some people like it and some people hate it. More important is for you to feed the puppy what it has been getting - unless it's something bizarre like pasta and weetbix! - until it's settled in.

Is An American Staffordshire Terrier A Pitbull?
Sandra777 replied to jackie_a1's topic in General Dog Discussion
No. The Amstaff & SBT have been registered breeds for the same length of time - since 1935/6 (more abbreviations for jackie a1 ). Some (a lot?) of the early SBT registrations were from people who also bred Bull Terriers and interbred the two varieties to get coloured BT's - do we have to say that the BT & SBT are the same breed because they come from a similar gene pool 75 years ago? 75 years is a LONG time in the dog world, more generations than most royal families can trace their ancestry. ETA: not saying royal families are a separate breed -
As I mentioned, it makes them fitter so they have more "excess" energy. Personally I'd be using the energy not getting rid of it

Yes I have used a treadmill - both purpose built dog one (Greyhounds, geared down for little Stafford legs) and a human one. Didn't see any difference between them but the human one was one that did have a slow speed. Useful for dogs that need to be got up to a high level of fitness if the owner doesn't have the time or ability to do the job - but boring boring boring for the dog if not coupled with fun activities to keep the mind active too. And not so good for a dog which is high energy but has a low energy owner - the dog just gets fitter, so more high energy, and more bored because the owner still isn't giving it what it actually needs. Personally wouldn't bother with one except to get a dog up to race fitness or a high degree of ring fitness (Agility, GSD, Rottie specialities come to mind, SBT speciality shows for the look not the fitness )

No you can't camp at Durack, but if you set up a nice camp area for your day during the show and accidentally fall asleep no one will come and make you leave.

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
Sandra777 replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thing being the law makes it the breeder's fault - the breeder doesn't have to offer a guarantee of any sort for it still to be their fault in law. Can take the dog back if it's show quality - -
Bad Problem With My Chow... Would Like Some Opinions
Sandra777 replied to spirrall's topic in Puppy Chat
Firstly, as I understand it certain families of Chows do have eye issues largely because of the peculiar diamond shaped eye required in the breed standard. I assume that the parents of your puppy have eye clearance certificates for whatever conditions are prevelant in the breed and that you specifically asked about the occurance of entropian in the family? The pre-export check has nothing to do with this sort of health check, they are checking for signs of disease and conditions which might cause the dog to be distressed/endangered on the plane (heart problems for example) Not all hereditary/genetic conditions are easily controlled by not breeding from affected parents - for example 2 dogs with very low HD scores can produce pups with very high scores; and not all genetic conditions are apparent at a young age, so if the breeder used dogs from families with no eye problems and your puppy was fine at a young age then they would have no reason to believe they were sending you a problem puppy, so may well be completely truthful when they say they had no knowledge that your pup had issues. The first time you noticed any problems with your puppy was the morning you took her to the vet? -
IMO because it's come to be seen as the mark of a puppy farm to have prices listed - have a look at some of the "designer dog" puppy farm websites (google any sort of oodle) and you almost always get a picture with a price under it - no different to the website of a computer warehouse really. Probably the breed club in your state is the best place to start - the secretary ought to be able to give you a ballpark figure for the breed you're interested in.
-
And to answer your last question - yes neutering him before he is fully mature will IMO stop him developing as a fully masculine Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but that's no excuse for not having him neutered at an appropriate age.

In addition to the above (and have just been through this with a Stafford puppy), vanilla on the nose, squeaky toy, treats, choke chain, practise at home, heavy clip on the leash - it all helped but at the show she'd say, stuff you - you can't make me. Well sorry Diva my dear - but I can Practice in a ring at the show with some random person standing in the middle to take the place of the judge. Sacrifice one entry and make that show ring appearance practice only. They do know the difference been practice and real life, and once you've proved to them that you can make them do it for real most will accept it as just one more weird thing mum wants me to do a couple of times a week....

Companion Dog Breeds For Mum
Sandra777 replied to Polgara's Shadow's topic in General Dog Discussion
What does she love about your Stafford? If it's the personality and she's used to a big boofer dog then it's likely a milder breed wouldn't really suit her. How about an older rescue/rehome Stafford which already has basic manners? A high energy Stafford pup may well be too strong for her (maybe not though, don't assume ) but the character and look combined with a few manners and some of the energy worn off might make an older dog just the thing. Failing that, you can hardly go wrong with a Greyhound -
They Say You Know When It's Time .........how?
Sandra777 replied to mousie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As you say - it's not possible to answer your question as to "how", but honestly you do know when it's time. If you have any doubts about it then examine why you have the doubts and what your emotions about each of those doubts is. Make absolute sure you aren't having doubts because of any emotion that has anything to do with the loss you will feel because it's not about what you will feel (as you know). Very hard decision. -
Looking For A New Vet Near Coomera/oxenford
Sandra777 replied to dan76n's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Don't know the name but the vet on the main road at Jacob's Wells gets the thumbs up from a number of people I've spoken too. I think it's just Jacobs Wells Vets, could be wrong -
Like the others I don't think your problem is with LR as such but with things not being done as promised. Personally I think it is utterly bizarre that there is no registration class to allow people to own and show a dog but not breed from it. Obviously the ANKC thinks there's enough people involved with dog shows so there's no reason to encourage more to participate. IMO LR should be for dogs that are not to be bred from, which may or may not mean they're not suitable to show.

Pups Interacting Through Fence
Sandra777 replied to Kody's_Mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Perhaps the neighbours could concern themselves with socialising their puppy so it's not scared of random loud noises. If it's a big deal likely to cause problems with them in the future then I would just block off the problem area with some chicken wire, but still be sure to tell them that a dog which is seriously noise sensitive needs very intensive and careful care to ensure it doesn't have a miserable existance in a world full of random loud noises. -
What To Expect During A Season
Sandra777 replied to Prydenjoy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep. Stop stressing, you'll know when it's for real -
I was given a small bag of this as a sample. It stunk, even China who especially enjoys rotting crud of all sorts pulled a funny face at it. Dogs didn't like it and even the local fox wouldn't touch it.
