Question For Breeders About Pet Stores.
Sandra777 replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
The original question was whether an ethical breeder would do it - no one even mentioned registered breeders. -
Question For Breeders About Pet Stores.
Sandra777 replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
It wouldn't surprise me if some ended up being sold/passed on to puppy farms, I have no evidence to support this belief. No way would I ever sell a puppy through a pet shop - I'm not even allowed to go in to shops where mammals are sold (OH banned me) -
x2 IMO it should be taken out, as it's still solid I doubt bones etc would help now.

A week to adjust to a home after a pet shop :D and a puppy farm ;) isn't a lot of time for one so young. Yep, the optimum may not agree with her and obviously you should feed her what suits her and you, just saying don't write it off, a runny butt in a baby that's been through so much really isn't all that surprising.
-
Probably best, but what else would you put large tubs outside a toilet block on a dog show ground for ;)
-
That'd be great - thanks!

Well if he's burying the bone and not eating it he's only getting one meal now, he's still alive isn't he

Maybe they are, my fading memory is that they were quite big? Would love to know for sure! Couple of weeks for the Stafford speciality

Oh dear. Poor little mite has gone from her "breeder" - one sort of food - to a pet shop (very stressful) and another sort of food - to your place and another sort of food no wonder she has digestion issues. You won't find a huge number of people here who would agree that Hills is the best anything, so do your own research and if you've always been happy with optimum in the past then IMO you should stick with that until proven otherwise. I love that your vet knows it was due to the change of food and not corona virus, parvo or salmonella or anything else this poor babe could have picked up on her trip through a pet shop. IMO boiled chicken (no need for any rice) for three or four days with absolutely nothing else - no treats, no extras, no biscuits, NOTHING else, would probably be best. Then slowly reintroduce whatever food you decide on - and by slowly I mean no more than five or six biscuits for the first meal, then observe if she tolerates this before increasing the amount, it could take a week or more.

Well you could feed him the bone in a crate or other enclosed area so he doesn't have a chance to bury it - but generally speaking a dog only buries things if they're not actually hungry so maybe he's telling you something Nail clipping - do NOT make it a wrestling match. Get some manual clippers, hold them in one hand and play with his feet with the other, lots of treats. Then play with his feet with the same hand as the clippers are in, lots of treats. Then touch the clippers to his feet without actually doing anything, lots of treats. Then "air clip" near his foot lots of treats. Then finally just clip one nail lots of treats. I assume you meana dremel or similar grinder sort of thing that he likes to attack? Do the same. Hold it in your hand, turned off. treats. etc etc etc. If he tries to mouth it or "attack" it, a stern ah ah or no or whatever you use, then treats for withdrawing his mouth. If he's really bad, teach him Doggy Zen with the dremel in your hand along with a treat - he can push and lick and paw all he likes but only gets the treat when he moves his head away from the dremel (treat).

Can you nip down and take a look :D At least I'm remembering the right grounds

Wow, your vet vaccinated a 10 week old puppy with a runny butt? Time for a new vet my friend! What was the breeder feeding her? What diet advice did you get when you bought her? Was there a reason you changed her food (ie were you advised to feed her weetbix and water )
-
Depends on the pup and the reason for the runs. Personally if the pup is under 12 weeks old I wouldn't be waiting for more than 24 hours for a medium sized puppy (adult weight over 15kg say) to get better. Smaller the pup the less time I'd wait. For a slightly older pup (over 12 weeks) I'd consider not feeding at all for 12 hours, but again probably not for a small breed puppy.

Can someone tell me.... my memory says that behind the toilet block at the Hillsborough grounds (toilet block by the the rings closest to the road) there are a couple of tubs which look like they might be intended for dog use. Are they still there? Were they ever there or am I remembering the wrong grounds? If they are there, are they intended for the use of dogs, washing of or will I get in big poo poo for doing such a thing? TIA

High Fibre Diet For An English Cocker Spaniel

She'll eat it if she's hungry -
Sorry for the loss of your father. It sounds to me like you are almost ready to let Elvis go but this is just a really bad time in your life to let anything else go, which is perfectly understandable. Can you meet this woman and if she is what you want for Elvis, explain to her about your recent loss and that right at this point in time you can't let Elvis go but that you want her to have him when you are feeling more in control. I think most people would understand how you feel and assuming she doesn't have a hoard of children clamouring for a dog NOW I think most people would be prepared to wait a while. Perhaps in a couple of days (or more) you could call her and see if you can take Elvis to her place for a visit, then a bit after that let her take him for the day - let go slowly in other words. Rehoming the "older" ones is so much harder but sometimes it is better for the dog. I understand completely what you mean by he's 'taking the room' of a younger dog even though you love him dearly - it's a terrible position to be in but you have to be realistic sometimes. There's always the special ones you can't part with, and always the ones you love but can see living elsewhere just as happily.

Yep - 12 weeks was the advice here too. If they are pills but not chews you can divide them up to the size that suits your pup's weight

Success! And Another New Experience
Sandra777 replied to spottychick's topic in General Dog Discussion
No issues with you spottychick or what you were trying to do with a very troubled dog, you obviously know that a dog curled up in a basket isn't necessarily warm and cosy! ;) -
Success! And Another New Experience
Sandra777 replied to spottychick's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sounds like Tango needed to be allowed to get used to a lot of things, but in the mean time wouldn't it just have been easier to get him a bed which was covered over (crate or igloo type bed). Never understood why people (not you spottychick!) think a dog in a basket trying to heat up the whole room with it's body heat is "warm and comfy" - provide a covered bed and see the difference. -
The dogs may have come from WA or even from New Zealand.

I understand a lot of the really small dogs have major blood-glucose issues and have to be fed much more often than a normal sized dog of their breed.
-
And the dog laws don't suck as hard as they do in the rest of SE QLD - on 2000m2 or more you can have 4 dogs, no permit required. A recent immigrant

Personally I find they splinter too easily under the attentions of a Stafford (other dogs, different outcome). But if Diesel's more a gnawer than a muncher he might enjoy chewing on the joint ends and getting the cartildge and marrow. I'd just watch him and pick it up if he starts to crunch it into long spears. If it was a young lamb it might be OK though!

It could say highly responsible and ethical breeder who believes in giving the public a choice and attempting to make high quality dogs available to good but naive people. Shock horror - I have advertised on free-ad sites and in free-ad newspapers as well as sites such as trading post. There are some genuinely good people out there who know there's something better than the $200 puppy but really don't know how to go about finding it. They sometimes know there's something called a Canine Control but usually have the idea that it's JUST for show dogs so wouldn't even try searching for links. They sometimes know there's such things as breed clubs (but often don't) so sometimes search for these, but mostly yet again think these are just for show people. Sadly they often believe (usually because a BYB told them) that show breeders won't sell to pet homes as well. The medium of advertising is irrelevant IMO - it is the quality of the screening that happens prior to sale which counts.

Is there a Neo club in Australia? Contact them, they should be able to point you in the right direction.
