Sorry about the pups, it's sad to see them so heartbroken and confused isn't it? I had a first timer loser her single pup and she was all over the place for a week or so. I just allowed her to mope or do what she wanted for a couple of days then put her back with her best adult dog friend and treated her like nothing was unusual. Her dog friend was great, just lay with her and didn't want to play or anything. This bitch went on to be a fantastic mum with her second litter (of five), not clingy or stupid, just perfect.

How do they clean those "rooms''?? Really don't want my dogs bringing home some other dog's skin condition..........

I have seen a lot of people of here recommend the White Rose at Walloon which is, granted, West Ipswich rather than West Brisbane but not that far! More North West - there is Samford Pet Resort? some name like that which I've seen mentioned here a fair bit.

What breed and what family of that breed? The chance of cancer in some breeds is extremely low anyway so the "chance of cancer'' for your specific bitch could be virtually nil. Boxer pup from a high risk family would be a totally different proposition to pup of another breed from a family with no cancer history. Personally I'd let nature have a chance to do her thing before letting a vet do anything.

Electric Fencing... Or Another Option?
Sandra777 replied to SalTheGal's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes it would - and probably nothing much would happen as it would be shorting. Use outriggers to set the tape out from the wire and make sure the tape isn't touching anything like heavy bushes, tree trunks, lots of long grass. They'll only touch it once Doing what? keeping her safe at home? She will very likely only challenge the fence once, get zapped and not do it again. Better than getting into fox bait or being knocked into a ditch by a car and dying an agonising and slow death. -
I said "generally speaking" so quoting what was actually said would've been nice :D You also said that vaccines "don't wear off" as they work by stimulating the immune system as if it had encountered the actual disease. But I'm sorry if I misunderstood you and you meant that many vaccines don't wear off, but some do, just like when the body encounters the original disease. Vaccinations don't ''wear off'' - the body's response to it wanes or not - Frontline wears off. Pen notes written on the palm of my hand wear off.

Frozen semen AI? Definitely don't wait - timing is critical and the window of opportunity can be very small. Chilled semen I have no experience with but would think the timing is also important from the point of view that you have to get the semen there at the right time. If you're going to spend $xxxxxxxx on inseminations then why save 50cents on blood testing?

I said "generally speaking" so quoting what was actually said would've been nice :p Yep there are ''several'' diseases which can recur, and some which can recur in a slightly different form, shingles in humans for one but ''several'' isn't ''all'' and ''generally speaking'' isn't ''all'' either No one is saying any vaccination is automatically life long which is why the titre testing comes into it ETA: And in how many cases of people/animals getting the same disease twice or more, is the immune response incomplete in the first place so the immune system hasn't worked properly? People ''generally speaking'' don't get chicken pox every year any more than dogs ''generally speaking'' don't have an annual bout of distemper.

Then I am curious to know why the American and the Australia Vet Associations now recommend 3 yearly vaccination Cost really isn't the issue - it's the long term welfare of the dogs that I am concerned about. I have had a dog die on the vet's table within 5 minutes of being vaccinated so I really don't care what this vet believes - in SOME cases vaccination is fatal and I know this for a fact. I repeat - when were you last given a booster vaccination for the diseases you were vaccinated against as a baby?
-
That confuses me a little, so let's say the titre test comes back as "negative" - how then would I know whether my dog really does not have the required antibodies hence requiring re-vaccination - or if its just that the antibodies have simply retreated to a cellular level hence no need to re-vaccinate?? Thing is you don't know. Many people are confident that their dog's immune system functions normally and would not be concerned so would not vaccinate again. Others would not be confident of this so would. This is your call. Vaccines don't "wear off", they are intended to make the body's own immune system do what it's designed to do and produce the antibodies to fight a disease, just as it would if it encountered the disease for real. Generally speaking once a dog (or person) has had a disease they are immune to that disease for life - because their immune system has fought off the disease and done what it's intended to do. Just as an aside - when was the last time you were re-vaccinated with any of the core vaccines you received in childhood? Do you believe you are still immune to the diseases you were vaccinated for as a baby?

I would expect to get my entry fee back for an age of group and about 2 x that for BOG and 1.5 x that for ROG. In shows - double the above would be about right to me at a smaller country show (under 500 entries), more at a prestige show or one with 500+ entries.

Shame the puppy just can't run away from home while boy is at school and mum at work (out shopping).

You might be lucky and dad is a complete idiot and the pup is actually a Pug

Threw Up - Should I Re-dose Him?
Sandra777 replied to allie181's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Personally I'd wait a few days before giving him anything else. Have never used it but I think I read on here that Comfortis can cause vomiting in some cases? In which case you definitely don't want to be giving it with anything else just in case. Check it out anyway, I could be wrong! -
Totally random, I wonder if Chocolate Labradors would be so popular with BYB and the great unwashed if they were Liver Labradors instead?

What Prizes Would You / Wouldnt You Like To Win At A Show?
Sandra777 replied to Jsk's topic in General Dog Discussion
Money is always the best prize but when you get a group and it doesn't cover the entry fee or an in show and it's less than you got for the group then it's not so great. (Don't expect a million dollars for Baby of Group at an Ag Show, but......) Worst prize would have to be a blank video tape. This was about 15 years ago, but really? Or two aqua coloured nylon pillow cases. Weren't even any good for soaking up garage crud -

The Great Joint Terrier Show Of Nsw
Sandra777 replied to Sandra777's topic in General Dog Discussion
The only dogs from the open show that compete are the BOB (or BIS from the specialties) winners and they are placed 1 2 3 4 and then the Puppy of Breed winners who are like wise placed 1,2,3,4, Thanks - so there would be 2 Staffords in each comp & 2 Smooth Fox? -
How Do You Get A Dog To Chew Its Food?
Sandra777 replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Dogs are designed to swallow their food in chunks. Farting is much more likely to be a result of some sort of issue with an ingredient. -
It's perfectly normal for dogs to protect things they see as valuable to them - they aren't little people who can be taught to share because it's ''nice' to share'' You can train resource guarders (which is what your dog seems to be) that it's to their advantage to let another dog have something they want. Don't feed your dogs bones unless they are separated or next time they may not get off so lightly The vast majority of dogs think meaty bones are worth protecting from others. I'd suggest you search resource guarding on here. As for not playing nicely with others - be very careful because one day he WILL meet a dog that will take offence at this. If you can't recall him from a situation like this you shouldn't have him off leash to do it with strange dogs. If he only has the opportunity to do this to dogs he knows then you need to determine whether the other dogs are actually concerned by him, if he's doing harm and if the other dogs' owners mind. If it's not a problem to the other dogs it's not really a problem, dogs play differently to kids and it can look very rough when they're all just having fun.

Feeding Pups Between Flight And Long Car Ride
Sandra777 replied to mini girl's topic in Breeders Community
I read this the first time as no food allowed the entire day before the day of their flight Water during the trip and a small meal when they get home would be the way I'd go, but I think Stafford pups probably have a bit more meat on them than Mini Poodles A little cooked chicken probably wouldn't hurt if they're good travellers, nutrigel if they're not so good. Just keep emphasising the importance of water above all else. -
I'm stalking SoL OH was talking to a new workmate yesterday. A dog which is more than 75% white will always be sick apparently. His mate has an Amstaff white with a blue eye patch. Best Amstaff out there apparently. More than 75% white? You bet :D Papers? er, dunno. Awesome dog, his mum wasn't even a year old when she had him so must be a really awesome bitch You do know Amstaffs aren't meant to be more than 80% white? (he's not sure of the figure, something like that anyway!) No, didn't know that. Best Amstaff out there You seriously got to wonder if people listen to the c**p that comes out of their own mouths!

Oddly this new colour appeared in a kennel in the USA which breeds both Weimaraners and Labradors

The above show isn't a regular show is it? All the BIS & Minor/Pup IS winners of the Airedale, Aussie, Bull, JRT, Fox Terrier, SBT & WHW club shows compete don't they? This is what I understood, just want to check! What about the other breeds, the ones the open show is for - do they compete with the specialist BIS winners? How does it work for the SBT and Smooth Foxies - there's more than one show for them. Just curious - don't expect to be involved

Best Worming/flea/mite/etc. Control For My Miniature Schnauzer...
Sandra777 replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
You think it's pretty sad that people here actually care more about the welfare of your new puppy than the ''breeders'' do? Yep - because at least this would have indicated the ''breeder'' thought about the long term welfare of the puppies they had brought in to the world just a tiny bit. No health testing indicates no care about what could happen to these pups, selling them at 6 weeks indicates even less care You have received answers to your ''simple query'' - answers an ethical breeder would have answered for you (and indeed have done so on this forum) You're not locked in to supporting this puppy farmer but apparently intend to support their unethical breeding practices despite KNOWING you have made a bad decision. Can't help some people
