  1. I agree with Showdog. I have to be honest and say my initial reaction to your approach on behalf of a friend would be sceptical and I probably wouldn't entertain any further communication. This is mostly because there is a history of dishonest dealings that have happened in the past in my chosen breed. ( people have purchased dogs from good kennels only for it to be a set up and the dogs are then in the hands of known byb's). As Shelby has suggested help them write a list of great questions to ask. You could also help them construct an email as there first point of communication and send to a list of breeders, you could then help them sift through the replies and narrow down a short list. Going by some replies your friends may begin to get a feel for the situation and start to come up with their own questions to ask a breeder. It could certainly help them if you had a list of questions ready to go if and when they have a shortlist of breeders to talk to over the phone.
  2. Has your bitch got a history of fertility issues or reabsorbing litters? You only really need to prog test if that is the case or you suspect she is reabsorbing other wise I wouldn't generally bother. Like Icemist I have just had a litter that was only viable due to progesterone supplementation however the bitch had previously reabsorbed 2 litters before heading down that road. This time we managed to foil any sign of her reabsorbing as we had started progesterone early she did still have 2 risky drops in her levels, in the end it was worth the nightmare and expense to have a litter of 4 from a female we thought may never give us anything. Icemist - I haven't ever heard the theory with frozen semen implant? Maybe, it has something to do with the psychological effects of insemination as opposed to a natural mating rather than the semen or implantation itself???????
  3. Oh that's a shame. Best wishes for next time. If you try doing prog tests when she next comes into season you will know the best time to mate her and increase your odds at getting a litter, you will also be able to calculate her exact due date from ovulation. I can sympathise with you at the moment, I went back for a 2nd ultrasound on one of my girls today as I had a sneaking suspicion she may have had one or two hiding in there.......no such luck I'm afraid, she's empty
  4. I would personally be going to get an x-ray right now. Over baked can be just as bad as premmie. Did you do any prog tests for mating, do you know she is 5 days overdue from ovulation or just the mating? She could have total uterine inertia or she could just have everyone fooled with a phantom......an x-ray or ultrasound is the only thing that is going to give you any answers, but if she is already 5days over due I would not be waiting until Thursday to see the vet.
  5. The process is a little different for semen, but still requires, lots of money, patience, a good shipping agent and a vet in the dogs country that can understand the process despite language barriers in some cases! The dog being collected must have been Rabies vaccinated in the last 12 mths. They need to have blood tests done for Brucellosis and Leptospira viruses within a 30 day period of the semen collection. ( so you can blood test, get results and collect all in the same week if you can, but the collection can't be done any later than 30days post bloods or the bloods have to be run again). Then a health certificate check must be carried out no less than 21days post semen collection. The tank then must be sealed and paperwork signed off by an official state vet before being despatched. The costs can run into the many thousands depending on the veterinary costs in the local country and the stud fee agreements with the dogs owner. Some stud owners expect stud fees straight up for all the breedings from the collection, others are happy with a single stud fee upfront and remaining stud fees paid as you use the breedings etc. Really depends on your relationship with the stud owner. Some might even ask for travel costs to transport the dog to and from the vets, although both times I have imported semen ( USA & Europe) I offered travel money and both owners refused ;) despite they both had fair distances to travel to find a good repo vet. I would still say importing semen is cheaper than importing a dog however that all comes down to what is expected of stud fees etc. Obviously, the shipping costs are a lot less, but the paperwork and timing is even more tedious.
  6. Huge congrats Lilli, it is so wonderful to hear that you got a lovely reward after all the stress and hard work to get her there :D
  7. Can anyone recommend a Chiro or manipulator in the Gladstone QLD area???????? Any help appreciated
  8. Can anyone recommend a good canine Chiro or manipulator in the Gladstone QLD area? Don't mind if it is even just an old greyhound guy...they are usually the best! Any help would be appreciated
  9. Skyehaven, the pups have to be microchipped before the DNA sample is taken. I had my pups microchipped with their 6wk vacs and DNA swabbed at the same time. It was then about 10-14days to get the DNA profile results.
  10. Stranger things have happened! But, funny enough I was only having a discussion with a friend in NZ about the high incedence of bitches and mares either not falling or reabsorbing/miscarrying of late. There has got to be something in it, besides just coincedence.
  11. Welcome to Karalee.....we are a great suburb
  12. I use Listerine mouth wash - the original yellow stuff. The alcohol and anti-bacterial properties in the mouth wash clear up hot spots within 3-5 days. Listerine was recommended to me by my vet. The problem with a lot of other topical treatments and antibiotic creams is that they allow the spot to stay moist, when you want it to dry out as well as kill the bacteria causing the issue.
  13. Have they taken any samples of blood and urine for cultures???? My dad's dog had a few of the symptoms listed but most in common was the temp over 40 degrees that took 5+ days to break. Finally, the culture reports picked up that he had Septicemia.
  14. Moreton Vet hospital Redbank Plains Rd, Redbank Plains ph 3814 3333 24hour emergancy, cheaper than a lot of other vets around Ipswich ( makes me cringe what some vets around here charge) plus a 20% discount for CCCQ members. Very experienced and caring staff. I have also used the Karalee Karana Vet surgery ( partner surgery to Brassall listed above) for the basics and they have always been great. However, they don't offer any after hours service and I they wouldn't be my choice for any major surgeries.
  15. LOL Yes. 'Nightmare' could be considered an understatement!!!!!!! Have you used your semen????? I think they sent me a photo of your beautiful foal...
  16. Off the top of my head, I think it was around $60-66
  17. Havahug, I just used 2 normal forms - one for each sire and list the pups that have been DNA profiled to that sire.
  18. I agree with the others, go get an ai done asap. Just because your girl is on day 14 or 15 doesn't mean she has ovulated yet or she may have only just ovulated but the eggs still take 3 days to mature. I have just had a girl ovulate on day 23 of her season.......... Don't worry about the prog test this time, just get the fresh ai done, what have you got to lose??? You are going to try for another mating anyway without knowing what the prog levels are so you might as well guarantee that something gets up there this time!
  19. Another vote for Cryogenes  they were fantastic in helping me get a disaster shipment out of Europe last year!!!!!!! They really care and go the extra mile for their clients. I highly recommend them.
  20. I used frozen semen via surgical ai on a maiden bitch and we had 11 pups However, a natural mating wasn't an option! I have also used Chilled semen via surgical ai on another maiden bitch, we've had 2 goes and both times she reabsorbed. Her progesterone levels drop very quickly around the 4 wk mark. Part of it I feel is also psychological with some bitches, without an actual mating they do not recognise that they are or could be pregnant, I guess you can never rule out that this does then play a hormonal and physical role with the female falling and carrying a litter to term. With the your options of how the semen is prepared, I would suppose nothing beats a natural mating or even a fresh semen ai. But even this depends on the quality of the dogs semen and getting the timing right with your female.....although you get more than one try at getting it right!!!!!!!! lol Chilled semen, you will generally have about 48hrs to use it, so you have time for shipping etc although I have heard that with an extender it can last many days if refrigerated correctly. Can be shipped in a little esky. Frozen semen has to be shipped in a dry vapour shipper, timing is also critical as once thawed it can have a maximum life span of about 12hrs. A huge factor is not only the timing of the bitch but also the quality of the semen post thaw. Not all dogs semen survives the freezing and thawing process. So unless you have a good post thaw analysis I wouldn't be using frozen. You also need a good reproductive vet if you are going with Chilled or Frozen methods. It is always good to look at all of your options, for me having large breeds it is often easier and cheaper to go with chilled or frozen semen options than put my bitch on a plane.
  21. Both sires via Frozen semen. 11 pups in total ( one lost at 48hrs) From 10 DNA tested, genetic split - 6 pups to one sire and 4 to the other.
  22. I submitted two forms and all DNA certificates (from GenTech) as per what I was told on the phone by the office staff. I then received a call telling me I needed to supply Microchip forms for all pups with their proposed registered names on each form. I spend most of Monday on the phone but finally got the paperwork back yesterday. Obviously, mine were microchipped ( as they have to be before the DNA testing is carried out ) but I honestly can't remember having to submit the microchip paperwork with the rest of the forms. However, it was before microchipping became compulsory here.
  23. With the CCCQ I submitted two litter registration forms - one for each sire and pups accordingly. Along with the DNA results certificate. We used Genetic Technologies to do the DNA testing. We had no issues what so ever in having the litter registered and the CCCQ posted the originals of the Dna certs back to me with the pups papers.
  24. Don't know really! It is a great shame that it is not in print.
