Well I eat rabbit that has been caught using ferrets and am also breeding our own chickens to eat. We buy free range chicken as it is the ethical option but it is very expensive so we'll grow our own. You really don't know what you are talking about when it comes to home killing, the animals are ethically raised and dispatched, even the free range chicken I buy can't come close to the life mine lead. If I was being selfish I'd just buy cheap chicken cuts from the supermarket. You need to watch some River Cottage to see why people raise their own meat. Where does your chicken come from?

Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
Are You Serious Jo replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well i see it as my revenge as im allergic to cigg smoke and yet so many rooms that are non smoking have had ppl smoking in them.. such is life. It gives me asthma but its just something I have to deal with if i chose to stay in budget priced accomodation.. I dont stay at really flash places if I have dogs with me. So if a person has a serious allergy to anything perhaps they should stay in a upmarket place. That way they can be sure theres no evil pet hairs lurking anywhere. Are you for real? You'll get back at person B because person A did the wrong thing? -
Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
Are You Serious Jo replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ok, to those who think sneaking them in is ok because your dog won't make a mess, what do you think about the fact that there may be a person stay in that room who is allergic? How can you justify sneaking your dog in knowing that? -
Shivering When Not Cold
Are You Serious Jo replied to Sheridan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can you take his temp when he is shivering, some conditions cause you to feel cold even when the ambeint temp is not cool. -
Despite the fact there is ample evidence via peer reviewed papers that animals choose to work for food (contrafreeloading) and there have been significant benefits of training I some how don't think those papers will be mentioned. McGreevy is the new Don Burke, how did this guy get so much power?
-
You use the emotional hook that you know will work on the general public and while they are all aghast at the horrible thing you slip in the nasty medicine. Because how could people say not to what you are proposing which is the only way to stop puppy farms, don't you care about the little puppies? Marketing, they haz it.
-
Yeah, I did my degree there and I thought I was bad for talking the place up, but Mita takes the crown As much as I love the world of academia I also know it's limitations, and Sheridan is correct, money talks.
-
Really? Do you work for them? I can tell the name of one poor woman in Vic who had her dogs seized and they were in no immediate danger and she wasn't given any warnings. You might need to check you facts again.
-
Would you want the person doing the inspection to belong to an organisation that already thinks you are doing the wrong thing? If it was an independent government organisation doing the inspection it wouldn't be an issue, but the RSPCA have already made their views on breeders clear. The health department sends an inspector to check your bakery you have a way to appeal their decisions. The RSPCA decided you are doing the wrong thing they take your dogs, charge you an arm and a leg, if they get their way you have to pay their kennel fees upfront, and then they injure and kill your dogs and you have no recourse. Would you want that? Imagine someone who doesn't like you has unstoppable power over you, would you give them the ammo to use?
-
Don't forget that the kenneling fees that you must pay up front are equal to what the best pet resort you could find would charge, so there is financial incentive to seize animals. Hugh said it didn't he, they are trying to run a multi-million dollar business, his words. If you don't have a large sum of money available you have to surrender your pets, too bad if you are found innocent, and by that time the evidence has already been taken care of by the RSPCA. History doesn't seem to be an effective teacher for some I guess.
-
That isn't fair, asal had a pretty traumatic experience when targeted and is having a hard time dealing with it. Are you a breeder, are you comfortable with snap inspections by a group who answers to no one and has an axe to grind?
-
A lot of vets too are against breeders and hold grudges and have friends in high places, chocolate labs ring a bell.
-
No way I'm going back into breeding in this climate, especially as my breed would be pugs. I'll just try to get a pet pug before they are outlawed.
-
When all that is left is mass produced DD's everyone will be blaming the registered breeders for not fighting hard enough. Seriously, those who aren't breeders go ask the breeders you got your pups off what they think about having their addresses published and snap inspections by the RSPCA. For those who haven't been here very long there are a multitude of threads outlining where the RSPCA have bashed breeders, rescuers on here have bashed breeders, and the general public on here have bashed breeders. The only reason most have shut up is they are threatened with being banned. It's not about whether you want to see registered breeders banned, it is about the consequences of new legislation that will see reg breeders walk away or be prevented from breeding. Open your eyes and think about follow on effects, why is that so hard to understand. If breeders are already telling you that they will walk away, why don't you take them seriously? That is a direct effect of trying to shut down puppy farms via new legislation. Think beyond your own agenda and use some brains, what is the best way to stop puppy farming, stop sales in pet shops, not try to regulate them out of existence. If any of you have read the new proposals, it does the opposite, it allows large scale puppy farming as long as the farms pay their money. They will still exist. You want to stop them, stop their income stream, they'll move onto something else.
-
You will. Docking gone, debarking on the way out, limitations on how you breed now, soon what breeds you can breed. The writing is on the wall, is is going exactly how people have predicted. Yet puppy farms still exist and are doing great business. The target are breeders, they don't care if they are ethical or not. There are very few registered breeders who agree with new legislation, it's easy to say don't worry if you aren't the one going to be affected.
-
Why not focus the campaign on enforcement of existing laws? We've all seen footage of dogs in battery cages, starving, needing vet care. There are already laws that allow legal action to be taken. More legislation isn't the answer because it has been shown time and time again that it only affects those who are doing the right thing, the others fly under the radar. What if there is a mandatory code of practice that says dogs can only be bred on land larger than x square meters? There goes suburban breeders. What if they say you must not breed unless you have a kenneling facility x number of meters from the house and it must have x, y, z features, costing many thousands. There goes breeders who don't breed for profit. How is this stopping puppy farms that hide out in the country, as they do now? They'll still drop their puppies at the pet shops, which should actually experience an increase of puppy sales as many registered breeders walk away. How do you protect yourself when the RSPCA have even more power when there are no checks and balances now. Enforce existing laws and ban dogs and cats from pets shops.
-
What happens if the average registered breeder who has a few litters, enjoys showing and carefully places their puppies, cannot comply with any new legislation? What if the new legislation is made to hard to comply with for those breeders who live in the suburbs. You have to put all the pieces together and think about ramifications. New laws are going to lead to a few big puppy farm operations that supply all our dogs. They will be making a killing so will be bale to pay a small amount to comply. How can a small exhibitor/breeder pay the same fees when they are already out of pocket so much because they do the right thing? We have already seen what the RSPCA do to registered breeders, imagine giving them the power to walk into your home just because you are a breeder, you won't even have to have a complaint made against you. You can look forward to a world of non health tested DDs. As for the canine bodies not doing anything to stop it getting to this stage, disgusting, and I've told them so.
-
The reason you won't see a repeat of the case we saw in Vic in QLD is because it is impossible to get the RSPCA there to do inspections in the first place Having had over 20 years of dealing with RSPCA QLD I can't say I am optimistic that they are going to go against RSPCA head office and the other states and protect breeders. We've already seen how collaboration with unis has played out in other states, it has afforded no protection to registered breeders. In fact, the opposite has happened. Sorry to those breeders who live in QLD

Wandering Dog Update 14/12/2010
Are You Serious Jo replied to Bilbo Baggins's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think you'll have much hope rounding him up with people he'd just shoot out any gap and be gone. Trap seem the best way, bait and secured for two nights, then third night set. Surely someone had a trap, really the only way to catch him. Good luck guys, and good job! -
Now do you see why people have been complaining about their treatments as tenants all these years. You are just experiencing what the rest of us have to go through as tenants, doesn't matter if you do everything right there are so many property managers and agents who screw us over.
-
I'm not saying don't rescue them, I love ISA's and have a bunch of ex battery hens myself and I love them. Just that they are not going to be super producers like their first year of life and some have big issues. The first few weeks are a bit touchy for them as well, they are susceptible to respiratory disease. One tip as well is that the baldest ones are the most prolific layers, they put everything into egg production rather than feathers.
-
Just be aware that some of these poor girls are burnt out and some never lay again after their first year. They are genetically programmed to lay most of the eggs they can lay in the first year, that is why they cull them. Some do lay longer, but you won't get a large amounts of eggs. Some also die young, tumours in their reporductive organs are common. They are great chooks and make good pets so not trying to put anyone off. But you need to realise you may be stuck with a bunch of non layers, just thought people should be informed as this info is going out to a lot of places and I've seen some people think they are getting good layers.

Really Stubborn Urine Stain
Are You Serious Jo replied to Inka3095's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've done the vinegar thing on stains I didn't think would shift. Soak the area with half half water and white vinegar, then rub it a bit with a cloth. Then use paper towel to soak up as much as possible. When you have done that put a stack of paper towel over the top and put something very heavy over it. -

Rspca Proposals For A Mandatory Code For Puppy Farmers.
Are You Serious Jo replied to minky's topic in In The News
One of the scariest things I've heard so far. Disgusting. Otherwise, this code will pave the way for large wholesale puppy farms and kill most registered breeders. They'll make a killing because it will be the only place to get a puppy, they will easily afford the licenses because they'll be raking it in. As it stands at the moment, the costs to an owner when dogs are held in custody (sometimes for months on end) by the RSPCA are totally outrageous. Dont see that there is a different end result here As bad as it is now, at least you have the opportunity to fight them and try to get help if you haven't done anything wrong. Their proposal means automatic surrender as how many people could afford the amount they'd ask for as a bond? No other criminal offense requires this, are they going to ask for storage fees for non-living items seized in other matters?
