Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?
Are You Serious Jo replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Probably, we already know his views on purebreds. -

Corvus is one of McGreevy's students BTW, so data does end up in his hands so to speak. -

It's not only greys/sighthounds that are getting a bad rep, what about us poor cog researchers, we aren't all like this! -

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all dogs are created equal. -

Flawed studies still get published and quoted by the media, hopefully the resulting paper will acknowledge the issues raised here. -

Preaching to the converted here, I love greys and always recommend them as pets, but the one you need to convince is corvus. Good luck with that -

I guess that's not much better, but at least then she's only smearing one breed instead of a whole group! I'm not worried about DOL as much as the general media, we've seen how they lap up anything with McGreevy attached. -

Once the data is collected it is too late to change the definitions given to the owners. All she can do now is outline her errors in the discussion. Unfortunately speaking outside the data as done here can be damaging if the media pick it up. Maybe change the title corvus to reflect what data you are talking about, greyhounds rather than sighthounds in general. -
Barmera Sheepdog Trials
Are You Serious Jo replied to Red Fox's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It was awesome, but short! Didn't take them long to run down the street, but they were good sheepies and ran down the road rather than onto the crowd If you do come up and want a bit of company let me know piper and we can catch up for a bit. -

Standard Poodle Lifespan
Are You Serious Jo replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
Exactly, unless old age is strictly defined it is meaningless and especially prone to error with owner reporting. -
Standard Poodle Lifespan
Are You Serious Jo replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
What was his definition of old age? Also, if you live long enough you get cancer, you see it in pet rats because they reach their maximum age because of good care. That is why we see so much cancer these days in humans, we are living longer and it is inevitable. -

My Dog Won't Even Do A Simple "drop"
Are You Serious Jo replied to Lindainfa's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Does anyone have any youtube links to teaching a good drop? I know there are eleventy seven hundred videos out there but doesn't mean they are good. I have been slack for years about training and want my working dog to get a good drop. -
Low Income, But Still Want Pet Insurance..
Are You Serious Jo replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
No credit card either, and with no income we won't get one. I've had to stop work due to ill health and my partner cannot get anything around here, he's even going to try FIFO for the WA mines. I'm hoping we have no bad luck till he finds something, unless I can find a vet in Mildura who would work with the insurance issues. -
Low Income, But Still Want Pet Insurance..
Are You Serious Jo replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
One reason I haven't gotten insurance before is the pay up front thing. If I could get my hands on thousands of dollars I wouldn't need insurance in the first place! I don't understand it at all, how does it help low income people if you can't get a large sum to pay the vet first. The vets here don't do payment plans (there are only two surgeries and the next is 150kms away) and we won't get GE credit at the moment as we aren't working. I'll have a look at Prosure, but if anyone does know of an insurance plan that pays the vet please let me know! -

Sorry to hijack a little. Does anyone know of an insurance plan that doesn't require you to pay the vet bill upfront? Or does it depend on your vet? -
You are an awesome representation of the good owners of bull breeds SM!
-
I know how you feel I know you ignore the questions that don't support your theory, but have you listened to anything being said to you? Yes, pitbulls were fighting dogs, but they were originally bred to fight dogs, not humans. They weren't bred to fight humans, in fact, they were selected to be good with humans so the dicks fighting them never had to worry about being bitten. Some dogs have been bred to be a problem for humans, such as the livestock guardian dogs. Some of those are scary and are usually only found with people who know how to manage them. But bull breeds have always been selected to be good around people. But again, pits weren't bred to fight humans, humans are dogs, they were bred to fight other dogs, NOT HUMANS. I bet you're the sort of person that goes to the doctor and demands antibiotics for a cold right, you know better than someone who has qualifications and years more experience than you
-
Matthew, I'm not talking from the perspective of a pitbull lover, I have never owned one and never will. I'm speaking from my experience as a researcher on dog aggression and the reason for dog attacks. The sad thing is you are ignorant and refuse to learn something new. You don't know what you are talking about on even the basics, there are no pit bull breeds! My one hope is that by debating you any journos that happen along will be able to read some facts and just maybe this made up nonsense will cease.
-
Matthew, why can't you understand what people are telling you about fighting dogs? I'll explain again. PBs were bred to fight dogs, dog aggression and human aggression are two different things. The dogs bred for dog fighting were also bred to be good with people, because they didn't want the dogs biting them, just other dogs. The human aggression seen in some PBs is not because they were originally fighting dogs, it's because they are raised by morons who don't socialise their dogs properly. ANY bred can do the same if they are not raised correctly, there are many breeds and crosses that bite humans IF THEY ARE RAISED BY MORONS.
-
The problem thought Matthew is that the breed info is flawed, so the dogs that are attributed to pitbull or type could actually be any short haired large cross. I would like to see breed reporting scrapped in academic papers until those writing them have more dog experience and understand the huge mistakes being made in breed ID. I've done a study on the cause of dog attacks and PF is spot on. What I wanted to do but couldn't was do extensive investigations into a few serious attacks to delve into the reasons for the attack and focus on background of the dog/owner combo. Until this is investigated and the gov admit that it is a human driven problem then attacks will continue.

Bomb Dog Missing In Afganistan (1st Post Updated)
Are You Serious Jo replied to j's topic in In The News
I think the next time a dog is accidently killed by a car or anything else really, that originally was sold by the rspca they should be contacted and told to stop selling dogs to the public! What a ridiculous statement and I'm disappointed that the one good branch has come out with this. Those high drive dogs usually end up in bags, but I guess that is preferable to living a good life with a chance of death.
