It is quite scary that someone deep in the animal welfare world and in such a position of power can be so ignorant One step closer to the world of large puppy farms as they will be the only ones with enough income to afford to breed.

I'm not a clumber person but if it's healthy then why would it be a defect? I think the vet is overreacting and his/her decisions are overriding specialists, why should people bother spending a ton of money testing if a GP equivalent vet can rule all heath certificates void? -

Anyone remember the Judy Gard fiasco and how a vet told the new owner of one of Judy's dogs that it had problems with shyness and they PTS, most vets know bugger all about breed standards and what is and isn't an issue. -

Good thing the pug passed If you are happy to accept that the dogs DQ were done correctly then logic dictates you have to also trust the same vet who found no issue with the pug :D -

So much riding on the opinion of one vet, what if that vet is biased, so many are. I agree that the KC needs to take a stand and make changes but I'd rather see dogs pre-vetted (prior to show day) by a panel of approved vets. -

Unless you are serious about photography don't worry about photoshop, use one of the free or cheap editing software. Photoshop takes quite a bit to learn, it isn't intuitive and not worth it for people who just want to dabble. Pers is right though, nothing can save soft or poorly composed photos, you need to get it mostly right in the camera. -
Ok To Advertise Puppies In The Classifieds?
Are You Serious Jo replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in General Dog Discussion
Think about it logically, if only 5% of dogs born in Australia are from registered breeders and even the exaggerated figure of 10% of those end up in pounds that is a very tiny figure. -
Ok To Advertise Puppies In The Classifieds?
Are You Serious Jo replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in General Dog Discussion
When you look at the number of registered dogs in Australia from the entire dog population (I think 5%) then think about how many of those would end up in the pound you can see that the dogs ending up in pounds don't come from registered breeders. Stopping reg breeders from advertising in the classifieds would have no impact on dog numbers in pounds. I also agree that you need good breeders advertising alongside BYBers and puppy farmers so they have a better choice. -

The sharpness is achieved through using a good lens and camera technique and colour through photoshop, unless you are using the old super saturated slide film. -

Well I know you know of her so I'd start with you and you'd be shocked at what people can find out about someone from their posts. There are some people on here that could earn mega bucks as private investigators  The point is that as a professional you just don't give out details of patients or clients. But I don't think you are going to listen so carry on. -

I could find your cat lady if I wanted to, you've given enough info. You still have to gain consent from an ethics committee to use data and then you remove identifying info as well. On the subject I'm a live and let live, unless you brats or out of control dogs affect me, then it's on. -

There is a very detailed process to obtain approval for any research or published work and anyone that even attempted (I've never heard of it happening) to do a project without committee approval would be kicked out of their institution. I'd be very wary of mentioning patient details publicly, not writing their name isn't enough, if any identifying info is used you could be in a lot of trouble. -
I think when there is almost universal agreement on the interpretation of a behaviour from people with varying levels of expertise then it's safe to say you don't need a professional  It's like when you watch funniest home videos and you see a dog on the edge but no one there understands what is about to happen, at least here we can educate those who don't yet know all the dog behavioural cues.

Greymate does have extensive experience and her being able to read behaviour was critical in her job. It would be irresponsible not to point out to the OP that she misread the cues of the dogs at the park. Imagine how horrible it would be if this wasn't pointed out to her and her puppy was injured or killed. I know I have learned a lot from others on DOL so why not share the knowledge to make dog ownership better for new people.

Inbreeding isn't a problem if the person doing it has done their research. I don't get the hysteria over COI when the issue lies with how it is used. Outcrossing can destroy some very good and stable lines and one reason I'll never go back to breeding, I don't want to be told how to breed dogs from people who don't know what they are talking about. -

Remind me again about having to have council approval, are you exempt from having to outlay outrageous amounts of money to keep three breeding dogs or more if you have a prefix? The way I read it was that you are subject to having to comply even with a prefix, maybe I read it wrong. The council regulations are the thing that will kill small breeders and having a prefix wouldn't fix that issue. -
I shouldn't have to explain why an organisation that lobbies against a particular group shouldn't be put in charge of regulating them. There have been some serious conflict of interest episodes with the RSPCA and this is just another one of them. A charity/business should never be given this much power when they are actively lobbying for legislation change. This is the only case we have of it in Australia.
-
HAHAHA, have you ever tried to put in a complaint, I'm guessing not  It just doesn't work in reality and a charity/business that has a role in formulating law should not be responsible for enforcing it. No reason why the DPI can't take on this role, you ask who else can do it then that is your answer.

The only time a farm is a good place for some problems dogs is because there is more space to bury them!
-
Some argue they are two versions of the same thing, yet neither are correct to describe your use of class action in this context. The truth is you cannot take legal action based on laws that do not exist. You are also pushing the proverbial up a hill to get puppy farms shut down because they are soon to be RSPCA approved. They won't be the filth pits they used to be but large scale commercial enterprises that are fully legalised and endorsed by both government and the RSPCA. If you can't show welfare breaches then what are you going to complain about, because your opinion doesn't have any legal basis. Now that there will be a piece of paper that the puppy farmers can wave in front of everyone that says they are above board they will be untouchable as long as they don't breach the act.
-
No, it's raining cats and dogs is a metaphor, a class action is a real thing and in the context of this conversation it is quite reasonable to take it literally.
-
Nuh. Disagree I am not ususally the optimist, but what is needed is the banding together of like minded people. Have you never heard of things like "Class Action." The lines are being drawn as we type this and we need to align ourselves on the side we wish to advocate for, ie, the dogs. Its a democracy and its your vote that will ultimately count. A class action against who? Commercial Dog Breeders?? What would you be taking them to court for? I've been asking this and am yet to get an answer. Class action for what?
