I like dark too. The detail in the white is great, if he'd had his beak more towards you it would be a good shot. With the sky that dark I'd be tempted to dodge in a strong vingette.

I really love those moments of interaction between dog and owner so I've been collecting them, have some great ones from herding that illustrate it.

If you can get to the showgrounds it's a fun way to practice tlc, the busy backgrounds are a pain, but not much you can do about that.

I know, would have been a great shot otherwise

50mm 1.4 Or 1.8 Post Your Pics Here!

So do I, but I want to live more  -
Sorry I haven't been commenting on other's photos, a lot of the time they won't load for me and the connection is so bad it keeps dropping out, so I give up. It's taking me ages to post the flickr links I guess these are photojournalism, as close as I'm going to get anyway  From SACA f5 1/1250 ISO 400 80mm f5 1/2500 ISO 400 55mm

Practising focus on fast moving subjects down at SACA. It has given me the chance to try a few different things out to get the best out of my camera. I'm going to head back down and try TAv mode next. f4.5 1/3200 ISO 400 80mm f4.5 1/1000 ISO 400 95mm f5 1/800 ISO 400 90mm f4.5 1/3200 ISO 400 125mm

Finally got a few uploaded for different threads. I still don't have a spyder to calibrate, I think I have my sat and brightness too high on my desktop so just use your imagination for colour, I'm working on it  Back to portraits, first is a corgi from herding, she'd just done her instinct test and was a happy girl. f6.3 1/125 ISO 500 50mm I went down to SACA to practise action and got some portraits and candids. f5 1/1250 ISO 400 90mm

One of my favourites from some recent using the manual 50mm (1.7). -
Good, this is something I haven't actively tried, now just need some sun instead of the constant rain
-
TAv is you set your aperture and shutter and let the ISO float. I usually stick with Av because I most often did portraits but doing the action shots now requires a certain minimum shutter speed. I was dragging the ISO down when I could but it meant fiddling around as the light changed. So this seems to be a good mode for fast movement shots.
-
tlc, make sure your shutter speed is always higher than your focal length when hand holding, especially at longer lengths. A bit of weight is good to help steady your hands, but sometimes it's just too heavy. I've been wondering if someone has invented a set up where your camera can sit on something that uses your body as a brace, something more steady than doing it with arms. Would look quite silly though  Has anyone tried shooting TAv? I'm going to give it a try for action shots.

Actually, can I be a pain and get you to give me a list with the runs you want shots from for DogsSA. I have them in order for each day, but can't remember which runs were the best from each section. I don't trust my memory! -

Can you chase that up for me please. I'll work on getting those first then, then do the DVD for the club and the editor can choose what they want for the newsletter and whatever else. -

I'm still buggered as well! The dogs worked well even when the sheep were sticky and the rebel ducks rebelled Now I've seen PT I can work on that at home and be ready for the next trials. I've been working on action shots and it paid off, there are some nice shots in there. I took around 1500 photos so what I'll probably do is pick the best 4 or so from each run, plus the ones of setting up, winners at the end of the weekend and portraits. When is the next deadline for the newsletter so I can get it done before then? -
If they are older you might get away with manual, but those little ones do move a bit too quick. Some of the pentax lenses hunt a bit so for us, sometimes manual is faster anyway
-
So it's AF? For portrait type stuff where the subject isn't moving too much I really like my manual lenses, have you canon or nikon, I think nikon can use legacy lenses. Some of the old nikon manual primes might be good to try if so and you can get hold of them. I don't understand why the issue of loss of sharpness wide open isn't resolved because we need the lens to open up wide at times, but if the images are going to be soft you essentially have a slower lens anyway. I really wish I could upload here, it's so frustrating not being able to post from home for opinions!
-
Nice lighting and IQ with that lens, what does it do when it misses? I picked up a fairly rare lens from cash converters, pentax 35-105, fast AF and nice and sharp. It was $45 for lens and film body, I have some old nice film so body can be used. Cash converters don't know some of the older sought after lenses so worth having a browse through. I wish there was another pentaxian here!

Are People Rude Or Am I Too Sensitive?
Are You Serious Jo replied to GSDowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
Would it be offensive if I stated if grass is green? Why not save the hurt feelings for things that are said with offensive intent. I just don't get how making what was probably an attempt to be friendly by someone into a thing. I also feel the need to point out that dogs aren't human and you can say whatever you like about them and the beauty is they don't understand -
I don't know about this. The instinct in my 'show' border collies is pretty strong despite their ancestors not working for years and years. It is something that has always surprised me. Same with other 'show' breeds that I have seen herding. Forty years? Do you completely disregard herding skill in your breeding program (or actively select against it?) or is it still something you keep in the back of your mind and want to preserve in your lines? Also - herding is a very natural, base instinct in dogs in general, strongly selected for in herding breeds. Fighting your own species without provocation is not, and as such is not as long lasting when not selected for. Yes, have you been to a canine association run herding day and watched breeds like rotties, shepherds, corgis etc herd? As far as I know these breeds haven't herded for a very long time (longer than 40 years) and still retain that instinct. Herding isn't a base instinct in dogs, prey drive is, herding is a highly modified prey drive.

My wings have been clipped, no more carefree uploading and 34 tabs on the go! Plus it's been very wet here so haven't picked up the camera much.
-
I think you are getting pretty spot on with focus now, do you feel like it's easier to get it automatically now?
-
What, one of your dogs wouldn't comply, they always look like they are ready to do what you say  I went down to SACA to practise some action shots, so when I do the Hungry Jacks run I'll upload.
