My pup is 6 months old and has his pen set up in one corner of my bedroom. He loves going to bed and falls asleep straight away. Some nights he comes up on my bed and he's happy with whichever arrangement. All my dogs are welcome on my bed but Sarge only comes up when it's cold, Daina comes up every night even if it's hot (she steals the fan in summer).

I feed sardines in springwater and if I can't get them (which is often) I get the ones in brine.

Yup yoghurt is good to entice my old girl to eat if she's being picky. I also use lactose free milk or dissolve a stock cube in warm water and use that. I recommend fish oil if you don't already give it to her, it has done wonders for my girl. Her coat is great, her eyes look clear and alert and she just seems healthier overall Some dogs loves the smelly fish oil so could entice her to eat (I prefer to use capsules though). You can try gently heating food, it will release the aromas and be more appealing. We looked after a friends old dog a few years ago and for 2 days she refused to eat anything except cat food (took her to the vet just in case but she was given the all clear). Fussy bitch of a dog she was

Toothpaste? For The Dog Who Hates Bones.....
Mim replied to Winterpaws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Slightly off topic - For school photos my mum used to make us use a bit of bi-carb so our teeth were extra nice but then the school dental nurse told her that bi-carb strips the enamel off the tooth? Anybody know if there's truth to that? I occasionally brush the dogs' teeth if their breath is a bit smelly (after eating something disgusting). I just use a tiny bit of colgate on an old soft brush -

I wish I was given puppy and litter photos with my dogs. -
1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Owner 3. How common is it in Australia? Not very common but slowly gaining more popularity. 4. What is the average lifespan? Mid teens 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Valls are very loving and eager to please their owners. They are friendly, active, intelligent, and sometimes stubborn. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? About a 30 min walk daily with playing during the day. They could easily go for longer periods of time but I'd say that's a good minimum to keep them happy. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? I think so, the owner will need to understand that a Vall may test them at times and they need boundaries. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Elle lived happily as a solo dog until she was 8 BUT we did have somebody home almost all the time so she wasn't completely alone. With activities to occupy them I think they would be okay although they do like the sound of their own voice and might bark if they get bored. 9. How much grooming is required? Not much. A good brush when needed, more regularly when they are shedding. As with all double coated breeds, you have to be careful to completely dry them after swimming/bathing otherwise they can develop hot spots. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? They are great with kids. When my parents decided on the breed they specifically wanted a breed that would be good with kids and Elle is a dream. She lets kids poke and prod her and climb all over her without batting an eyelid. I imagine they would be just as gentle with infirm people.

Would a rottie be bouncing off the walls if it missed a daily walk?

Looks very (too) small, with no area for him to go pee or poo. I'd rather stick with our current setup in the ensuite - his bed in one corner with newspaper on the floor in the other corner for him to toilet on and enough space for him to play with his toys if he wakes through the night. Puppy shouldn't go to the toilet in the crate, that is why there is no room for it. I don't crate train but many who do promote it as a good way to toilet train. In my opinion, part of raising a puppy is getting out of bed and taking them outside to toilet when they wake up during the night. I only have newspaper down in the puppy pen to absorb any accidents. I think by encouraging him to go on the newspaper during the night you are hindering his toilet training. In my experience, puppies become toilet trained faster if you are taking them out during the night to do wee/poo rather than allowing them to use their sleeping area as a toilet. It doesn't take long for a puppy to hold on during the night. ETA: I am always too slow!

Muddy naps during the day and he gets quite sleepy around 8/9pm but he still runs around and plays and sees what's happening in the kitchen (he thinks washing dishes = food?). If he's had a big day then I put him to bed early. He's currently asleep at my feet with a full belly from dinner

Almost 18 week old pup. Has gone to bed at 10.30/11 every night since we got him and sleeps through to 7, or 8 on weekends (he's a smart dog, knows when to sleep in ).

Yes it's her hock, woops. Thanks for all your input. I might get the vet to look at it anyway next time we go.

Thanks FionaC - I'm going to go google dog warts. ETA: Hmm warts don't really look like what she has. Any other ideas?

I noticed this while I was doing Elle's nails today. It is on the ball of her foot and looks like a fleshy growth. It doesn't cause her any discomfort but I'm wondering if it needs vet attention. It seems to be attached to the foot by a small bit of skin and moves around quite a bit. Seems to have popped up recently although last time I did her nails there was a scab there..not sure if it's related. So has anybody seen this before? I think it may be a new paw pad forming at the base of her foot to toughen it up or something?

I don't use Sacha's Blend (use a different brand) but when I give Elle hers I need to mix it in with some sort of liquid or she won't touch it. Usually I just use a bit of lactose free milk or natural yoghurt but on cold nights I use some stock dissolved in warm water - that's her favourite, she inhales instead of eats ETA: If I have none of the above then I just crack an egg and mix it with that and then crush the shell up too.

Advance = Eukanuba Or Royal Canin?
Mim replied to muffinmclay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
What are they? Do you have any links? I know a lot of people who feed Advance (we even used to) so I'd like to show them if there's proof. -
For a poodle being kept in a pet clip how often would they need to be clipped? Is it easy to learn how to do it yourself?

They sound a bit like corgis in regards to barking then ;) Thanks

Are they vocal dogs? How do they handle the summer heat?

How Many People Use Conditioners On Their Dog?
Mim replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't usually use conditioner here but with Muddy's long coat I think I will get some just for him so his coat is nice and manageable.
