  1. Sorry I haven't read the whole thread if this has already been suggested. You could interview some pound/rescue people. So many people I've talked to about puppy farms think that the 'designer' breeds don't end up in pounds. One reason being that so many of the dogs produced by puppy farms are sold as "allergy free, hypoallergenic, low-allergy etc" and how when they grow up and aren't suitable for allergy sufferers, they are then rehomed or surrendered to the pound. Another idea is to interview dog trainers and behaviourists. I am sure they have seen plenty of unstable dogs produced by puppy farms or dogs who are too much/totally unsuitable for their owners. Could talk about how puppy farmers are just breeding on mass for money so there is no regard for temperament and then the results of that. It would definitely have an impact on viewers if it was possible to interview somebody who bought a pup on impulse and now has an unhealthy dog or one with mental/temperament issues etc. I know there are DOLers who have bought from petshops without knowing any better so perhaps somebody on here would be suitable to interview. ETA just read some other posts. Instead of interviewing people giving up pets, as I do not think you would find many willing participants, you could just follow a few pound dogs and get their story. Eg. "Fido was surrendered to the pound because he isn't cute anymore", you could get the reason of surrender from the paperwork (I think?) and that would replace the interview where previous owners say the same thing. I think following the journeys of a few dogs would be great and another way to really get the viewers to respond as they will sympathize with the dog.
  2. We got given a free bottle of the dropper stuff from a local pet supply place when Mud was a puppy. Totally useless, it had no effect.
  3. Daina the Destroyer has killed a black kong. No toy is safe
  4. Sarge done at 1yr old, bigger surgery than usual as he had both testes in his abdomen and a large incision. He was pretty sore and grumpy when he got home but got over the anesthetic pretty quickly. Then he got razor rash and the wound was fluidy and gross so we had a few vet trips during the first week. He was under constant watch just for 24 hours and then we just kept him quiet. Ziva and Daina done at 7 months. They were hyper as if nothing had happened as soon as we picked them up Then needed more watching than Sarge because they would try to jump and run around and do other crazy stuff. Muddy done just recently at 1yr. He was pretty drowsy and sad until the next day and then developed really bad razor rash which was very uncomfortable for him but as soon as he got some anit inflam/pain killers he was back to normal. He has been really good and not needed constant supervision but we did watch closely for the first night and morning just because he was trying to get a few licks in but thankfully would stop as soon as we said to.
  5. Seems more like a bad decade for irresponsible dog ownership Just the other day when we were leaving the vet with Muddy, a family pulled up outside the vet in their car. The vet is on a very busy main road. The parents get out of the front seats and the kids open the side door and out runs an adult poodle X with no lead or collar, the dad is holding a bouncy lab puppy with no lead or collar and one of the kids has a baby rabbit in a slipper?! The poodle X was running around like mad and we held our breath while they tried to catch it. Thank goodness they did, they were lucky. I doubt they will be more responsible next time though.
  6. I may be able to help you with the corgi. Would have to be Daina instead of Muddy or Sarge because she's the only show quality one
  7. One reason why I always supervise my dogs when they are eating. Daina has had a bit of bone stuck across the roof of her mouth twice and once it was stuck vertically between her tongue and roof of her mouth. Elle got a piece of bone stuck on a tooth a few months ago. It was so hard to pull off, really jammed on tight and I was so worried it would pull the tooth out (silly thought, looking back on it).
  8. Anyone know who the winning corgi is?
  9. Ouch. You can dip the nail in corn flour to stop the bleeding.
  10. *sigh* exactly what I want too. I'll just keep dreaming.

    1. I'm the boss, not them. 2. Toilet training. Can't have a dog sleeping in your bed if it's not toilet trained
  12. Muddy is a massive talker and he is always growling or grumbling. His favourite thing to do is be on his back, belly up and so often he will be lying like that with a toy in his mouth, rolling around and growling and talking. He does it when he is rubbing himself on a towel after a bath or on the bed or walls after dinner. Daina does it to psych herself up for things too. Like the first jump into a pool, she loves swimming but (just like me) the first jump in is the hardest to make so she talks to herself to get courage
  13. I've always thought of mongrel as something you call a bad dog. Mine get called mongrels when they are doing something naughty. In childhood movies and tv shows I remember dogs often being called mongrels by angry farmers or housewives or somebody, regardless of if it was purebred or not. Mutt I see as an affectionate term for a crossbred dog. I get snubbed alllllll the time by the general public for "cutting off your dogs' tails" I don't know how many times I've been lectured or patronized when I've explained natural bob tails. The last time it happened we were walking all three dogs (2 bobs, one tailed) and somebody decided to tell me it was illegal to dock their tails. I said "If I were docking their tails then why would I leave one of them with a tail?". She was stumped for a second until she told me that cross breeds don't get docked. Muddy is a purebred corgi too, just his colouring, coat and tail confuse people.
  14. Storm you handsome boy! We don't get enough photos of him Aziah. All are very nice photos
  15. We have a local guy who has 2 Dachshunds NEVER on lead. They are aggressive little buggers too. He often walks past our house and if we are out the front with any of our dogs, his will charge on to our property and attack our dogs (thankfully mine don't react). The guy just calls and calls with no response (surprise) from the dogs and so eventually meanders in and grabs them, no apology, just makes a little joke or something. I am sick of seeing him and his dogs offlead around the neighbourhood, he even will pull over his car and let the dogs out for a run on the sidewalk despite having NO control over them. Anyway, I don't know where he lives except I assume locally as I see him everywhere. There is no regular time or place we see him either. I just rang up the council, told them he had two Dachshunds, a red and a black and tan, both smooth coats. I also described him. Council said they would "look into it" and the lady on the phone said she had a fair idea who I was talking about so I suspect he's been complained about before. I have the rangers number in my mobile and from now on if I see the man and his dogs I am going to ring straight away so they can come down.
  16. Sarge didn't show any extra attention to his mum when they saw each other again and neither did she Maybe he was the annoying puppy in the bunch. But Sarge does get really excited when he sees a red and white corgi. He will just want to be with them and no other dog.
  17. Cut down her portions and use carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato to bulk up the meals. Fills them up with no extra calories. I give whole carrots as treats too which the dogs love and I think it cleans their teeth a bit. Elle was terribly overweight because of overfeeding and us giving her scraps. She lost just over 14kg by cutting down portions, using veggies to bulk up and slowly increasing her exercise.
  18. What about with Belgian Shepherds? My memory is telling me that two of the types can mix?
  19. That is amazing Steve! Can we see a photo of the old corgi? :D
  20. I was about to post, the Perth Zoo is full of them running wild! Not sure how true it is but many people have told me that apparently if you catch one at the zoo you get a reward? Perhaps the zoo wants to get rid of them. Or it's just a myth
  21. If you do end up needing kibble this place is good http://www.pookinuk.com.au/index.asp I know there are quite a few DOLers who have used and praise them. This is another place, I have not used them but they are Perth based http://www.treatyourpet.com.au/index.php
  22. How about when you can see them steaming on a cold morning walk. Oh the beauties of dog ownership
  23. Mine don't but it seems that many of the neighbourhood dogs do. I quite like it, it happens fairly often but they stop once they can't hear the siren anymore.
  24. I'm in the Mt Lawley area. There are only a few offlead parks around here and none are fenced. One park close to Mt Lawley (more North Perth area) to AVOID is Woodville Reserve on Fitzgerald Street. The regulars are very clique-y and unwelcoming and it's a popular place for stupid owners with dogs that should not be offlead. I've seen a lot of aggressive dogs and owners. A nice place is directly across the road from Mt Lawley Senior High School. There's two big ovals with just a path separating them, poo bags available and I'm pretty sure there's a tap they can drink from. Just avoid going when it's starting and ending times for school because some of the parents take their dogs and just let them go wild. If you pack the dogs up in the car a nice place to visit is Lake Monger. Have to be on lead but it is a really enjoyable walk with lots of bird life to observe.
