Missy seems to have cut her tongue. When we came home she didn't do her usual excited bark, or even want to move much. We tried to get her to have some water but she wasn't interested (she is a big water drinker and never turns it down). She didn't have much trouble eating some ham but she couldn't do anything that involved sticking her tongue out. I put a little bit of peanut butter on my finger to see if I could temp her but she couldn't stick her tongue out to lick it off. With the heat today I'm worried she'll get dehydrated, so I've been hand feeding her some ice blocks which she seems ok chewing. Whenever she tries to poke her tongue out she gives a little cry with her tail between her legs. I got my OH to hold her with her head on his shoulder (she is used to this position as she goes to sleep like it sometimes) and I tried to encourage her to open her mouth. She eventually yawned and I saw her tongue which appears to have a cut or a hole in it. I've watched her closely for the past hour and she has started to drink with her tongue again (maybe the ice blocks numbed it) I'm not going to panic just yet, as she is eating (and now drinking as well). She just seems very sad and sore, poor baby. Do tongues heal fast on their own or is a trip to the vet going to be required? Edited to add: Missy puts everything in her mouth, she's most likely done it on a piece of bark or something. She may have even bit her own tongue somehow.

Premium Dry Dog Food
Roxy_and_Missys_Mum replied to Baileys mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I tried a few until I found one that my dogs actually like, and one that they seem to do good on (ie. shinny coat etc). Currently using Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken because it says it's for puppies and small dogs (and i have 1 puppy and 1small dog, so it suits them both which is a big bonus!) -
Introducing New Puppy To Existing Puppy
Roxy_and_Missys_Mum replied to Moosashi's topic in Puppy Chat
I had the same problem with introducing Missy to Roxy. Missy wanted to play (as young pups do) and Roxy didn't want a bar of her. Roxy would sit on the outdoor setting and watch Missy entertain herself but Roxy was petrified to go near her. The only answer is time, as you've noticed improvement with time already. Just look at my two girls in my avatar cuddling up together. They are best of friends now. It just takes time. -
I had great problems with Roxy when she was a pup. It was almost as if she didn't want to miss out on anything by going outside, so she'd do it right then and there in the loungeroom. When we moved to a new house and got Missy I had a bit of an easier time with her. Getting a doggy door helped with the process but it still took my younger one (Missy) a while to get the hang of it. If your girl has access to outside, she will eventually make it a habit of going outside. Just when I thought my dogs would never be toilet trained, it just happened! Missy is almost 7 months old now and hasn't had an accident inside for quite a while (with the exception of a few weeks ago when we bought her home from being de-sexed and she was too groggy to walk outside).

Sorry just had to say, WinGus I love the quote in your signature!

Roxy does this to anything she is trying to make comfortable (the couch, her bed etc). Missy has started to do it as well. We used to sit there and find it quite amusing how they'd go round and round in circles trying to get comfortable! However, we just got a new lounge suite this weekend and we've had to make a new rule, no dogs on the lounge at all. They've learnt already that they are not allowed on the new lounge suite, they got a loud "uh uh" when they attemped it. They got the idea pretty quickly. But teaching your girl that she can't go on a couch that she has previously been allowed to use could be a bit of a task! Maybe you could put a blanket down on the part of the couch that she uses, and teach her that she is only allowed to lye on her blanket which she can dig at all she likes. Changes are if there is a nice fluffy blanket on one end of the couch, that's the end she will want to lye on.

What My Vet Told Me...
Roxy_and_Missys_Mum replied to Roxy_and_Missys_Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hey can ya stop fighting for a sec cauz I have another question I just realised that Nutrience has wet food cans too. Has anyone used them before? I'd love to try mixing some of that with the Nutrience Dry Food for some added taste (instead of the mince). -

Do you feed the dry food and mince in the same meal? That's what I do and someone earlier mentioned this is bad? -

I agree with you Warley, but I have to say I'm sorry if I made it sound like my vet lectured me out of nowhere. I actually asked her advice on if I was feeding the right thing. The advice she gave me was in the kindest possible way, she didn't lecture me or try and make me buy Science Diet or anything. It must have been her personal opinion and I respect that. I know for next time to not ask though. If my dogs are doing well, then I'll let that be the judge from now on. -

Thanks for everyone's advice. It's been great. I will be asking my pet food supply store if there's any preservatives in their mince. Also, I was just trying to think if there's been any improvements since having them on Nutrience and Mince (they used to get a supermarket brand) and one major difference is Roxy's eyes. Her eyes used to constantly be watery. I'd wipe them and 5 minutes later they'd be watery again. Part of it is because she's a small breed but her eyes have improved quite a lot since changing her diet. Their breath has improved too!! -

How does Nutrience Supreme compare to Nutrience Holistic? -

As for the meat handling, I buy 1 or 2 kilos of fresh premium beef mince from the pet store. I break it up into meal sized portions and put them in freezer bags and freeze them. I get one out each morning and put it in the fridge to thaw for their meal that night. -

The vet commented that Missy was a perfect weight and looked very healthy. So I'd say they are thriving on what they're being given now. -

Yeah they sell Science Diet but they don't sell Advance (which they also recommended) So raw meat is just fine then -
I fill my girls bowls with half raw beef mince/half Nutrience dry food each night. Sometimes I mix rice and carrots in with it for something different. I get raw premium beef mince for $3.75 a kilo from a great pet food supply store My vet told me: 1. Nutrience isn't a true "super premium" brand and that Science Diet and Advance are better choices 2. I should cook their mince instead of giving it raw because raw meat can have bacteria 3. I should buy proper "human grade" beef mince instead of what I'm buying from pet food shop True or false everyone? I don't mind changing to advance but I don't think I can afford human grade beef mince. Just out of curiosity, what's Advance wet food and dry food like and would it be a good option giving them half advance wet food and half advance dry food instead of what I'm currently giving them? I've been confused about what to feed before and this has just made me more confused

Melbourne Mince Supplier
Roxy_and_Missys_Mum replied to Elephant's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have just started getting beef mince from The Pet Shed in Airport West. I was using canned wet food until being told here it's mainly water, I was amazed when I went to get beef mince from a Pet Food shop that it's sooooo much cheaper than buying canned wet food, and better for them too. -
One more question regarding their food. Tonight I halved their Nutrience dry food portion and also gave them raw premium mince (from local pet food supply store - $3.85 a kilo) Is it ok to do this regularly mixing the dry food with mince? I just felt sorry for them only having the Nutrience dry food.
