Please Help. My Daughter Is Terrified Of Our Dog.
Mollie10 replied to boxerfamily's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our boy Ziggy was rehomed from a very similar situation. He lived in a family of 3 children. The middle child was terrified of him and remained terrified of him even with professional help. Poor Zig was living the life of an outside dog, when he is a sleep on the bed and cuddle on your knee type dog. They made the hard decision to rehome him and contacted his breeder, who then contacted us (she knew we were considering a second dog). Ziggy and the eldest (a 7 year old boy) were very close and I know he felt the loss of Ziggy keenly. I added his old owner as a Facebook friend and regularly post picture and stories so the little boy knows that Ziggy is very loved, happy and healthy. If you do have to rehome your boxer, see if his new owner can do something similar. There is nothing worse than having your dog taken away and forever wondering if s/he had a good life. Definately try counselling first though, although it is doubtful that if she has such a strong phobia of dogs she will ever be 100% comfortable around them. -
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Lagotto Lakeland Terrier Afghan Hound Polish Lowland Sheepdog Black Russian Terrier Coton de Tulear Briard Clumber Spaniel Gordon Setter Although I probably won't be able to own all the breeds due to allergies; I'm pretty happy with the wheatens to be honest.

Bearded Collie With Anxiety Problems.

Contact a behaviourist to come and help you work with this little girl. She can't help the way she is behaving at the moment. In the short term, I'd crate train her so she has a safe place to be so she can't harm herself. -

;) I am so so sorry. -
Mine are only pets, but for a show dog you'd probably want to brush and comb out your dog's fur at least every second day. They need a bath about once every two to three weeks. You'll also need to either learn how to style your dog's coat yourself or find a really good groomer (groomers often make them look like Schnauzers, which is totally wrong). If you are interested I can PM you some breeders' names who can give you a better idea of the time commitment for a show dog. The breed's tolerance for other dogs is excellent - they are very, very friendly so long as they are well socialised. Cats and other small furry creatures are variable. I know a lot of wheaten owners who have cats, but it depends on the individual animal's prety drive. Anouk would never tolerate cats. Ziggy had a cat in his first home, so he's more laid back around them. Both of them want to chase and kill rodents, potaroos, possums, birds of every sort. They really are the most wonderful dogs. They can be challenging, but I guess like the Beatles said "in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make". And they are THE cutest puppies in the whole world. ETA: How often you groom also depends on your dog's fur type. The Irish coat in general matts less than the big boofy English/American coat!

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, wheatens gotta jump up on people.

Wheatens aren't quite like other dogs To stop a wheaten jumping over visitors or having the crazies is to stop them being wheatens! I know exactly what you mean about the broken hearted look :D

My Ziggy was rehomed from his original family. Occasionally wheatens do show up in rescue but normally through the breeders. If you want some names I'm happy to PM you.

Anouk buries her bones with her nose. She does a crap job because she doesn't dig, just shovels dirt on top of it. She ADORES mud and would squelch through it for hours if I let her. Ziggy is a bit of a princess. Doesn't like getting his feet wet That's the point where I say to Grumpy and Mini (Princess), 'You're Irish farm dogs, you're not supposed to be scared of getting your feet wet!' That makes me laugh. Anouk refuses to go out in the rain. Ziggy will only go out if he's pushed... I tell them they would never have made it in Ireland I wonder if we've scared the OP's friends off yet? Gotta know all the gory details.

I congratulate you on your exceptional taste

WAKE UP, MUM! Yes, Grumpy does that one. *whack!* They're hilarious! Completely This is Anouk's "I've got something I shouldn't, come and chase me" look
-
Luffly! I don't have a photo, unfortunately, of Grump's bum-in-Mum's-face sit. lol I do know that one Oh something else about wheatens - Sometimes when I'm asleep Anouk will come and hit me with her paw until I'm awake and I pat her. If I stop I get another huge paw in the face
-
It depends on their mood. We had a mattress in the living room for a few days and Ziggy enjoyed taking leaps off it and they both jump OVER things, but they don't tend to act like pogo sticks except when doing the wheaten greetin'.

Or this?

Wheatens can be a challenge and they have a definate sense of humour. Personally I find it easy to be devoted to Anouk and Ziggy, but as I said, you have to not mind having a dog that steals your underwear and chews out the crotch, wipes its face all over the walls, carpet and furniture, counter surfs, steals things (remotes, mobile phones) and believes it is a lap dog

I have two wheatens. They are a brilliant breed which I love to bits. but not for everyone. They are definately terriers. They are a little more laid back than other terriers given that they were bred as an 'all purpose farm dog' as opposed to JUST a vermin hunter, but they still have all the terrier characteristics. Grooming is a big thing. Ideally they should be brushed and combed at least 3 to 4 times a week. They also need to be kept trimmed. This is actually one of my favourite descriptions from the SCTW UK site: http://www.wheaten.org.uk/index.php?option...n&Itemid=14 Don't get a wheaten if you are house proud. My two regularly wipe their faces and beards on the walls, carpet and furniture. I wouldn't be without them though!

Hope you are feeling better Check out this hilarious story Are Bull Terriers Good With Children? and consider yourself lucky I was afraid someone would come into my office and ask me what all the noise was about. That is so funny!

I got in the way of Ziggy's running leap onto the bed. He collected my face on the way through. I saw stars and felt like my cheek bone was fractured. I had a black eye the next day. You have my sympathy.

There have been quite a number of 14 yo+ dogs surrendered to wheaten rescue in the US. Thankfully some gorgeous, kind people have taken them in and given them wonderful homes for however many days they may have left. It always really upsets me. A dog is for life. You have a responsibility to be there until the end. Not be a coward and be unable to say goodbye properly.
