Polished Floors Verses Carpet/tiles Best For Dogs
AmandaJ replied to murraydebbie's topic in General Dog Discussion
We have both pine (majority of house) and timber laminate (extension) in our place. The laminate does not scratch or dent but the pine is badly damaged, although from furniture more than dogs. If I had the choice I'd go laminate. As Erny said you need to keep the dogs at a walking pace inside which does get difficult when the door bell rings. We have had the odd pile up at the end of the hall, but thankfully no damage. The most common one is a quick stop in the front end but the back end doesn't stop as quickly and the back feet get to say "hi" to the nose. The big plus for us is the coat pick up. With long coats we get "tumble weeds" of coat rolling around so vacuuming on hard floors is easier. -

a white shep can and is still purebred!! if it had pedigree papers and was in a reg litter then it is a registered pedigreed dog... i dont see how it is no longer a purebred just because it is white?? Thats like saying a sable border collie isnt purebred cause it isnt black and white?? edited to fix my wording re the above post Breed standards are clear on allowable colours. White is only allowed as a minority coat colour, and in certain sections, on a GSD; as with many other breeds. There are reasons why white coat must only be minority in proportion in many breeds (refer breed predisposition to vaccine mediated autoimmune conditions). In some breeds the white is a camouflage to snow - allowing for hunting ability. Dogs whose purpose is primarily snow bound and require hunting ability will blend into the environs - hence a white (or predominantly white) coat. Any animal bred from registered parents, bred by a registered breeder, will be registered (in fact ANKC rules direct that any animal bred by a registered breeder MUST be listed on one of the registers)with the state registering body (ANKC member body). Whether that animal meets the breed standard or not does not matter. All ANKC "bred" animals SHOULD be on either the limited or main register. Some breeders will monitor "good pups" and may even transfer them to the main register for breeding purposes as they develop. At the same time - as genetics is not a perfect science - an animal whose colouring is not to standard but whose structure and movement is very desirable may be of use in some breeding plans. Hence the reason many breeders take a chance on homes and do not sterilize before homing....in the hope that the new home will do the right thing. So much is the pitty that faith and truth grow ever further apart.

Dried fish treats - "Holistic Snax Fish Straps" 100% stout whiting - Petco - Ipswich Rd, Buranda Qld Crude Protein 57.9% Crude Fat 6.0% Crude Fibre <0.1% label has more than that I'm having trouble reading it... :D ..sorry Our dogs love them.

OK I'm SA and believe me we have our own issues - but are your VIC ppl aware of the recent changes to the incorporated associations act? http://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/CA256EB5000...on+Act+changes~ Your ask for it - they must provide it! I, as do so many, work. Getting to everything is difficult (family will always be prime) - and juggling only goes so far. The "system" needs to progress so we can all be involved with-in our personal time frames.

Bearded Collies love driving open top cars and watching the sun set. This poor boy just wants to go home. Flamingo reflects.

I have a bitch that humps anything she can grab when she's in season......like right now Our neuter doesn't like it but he gets her back - with his cold wet nose fair up her bits

I use a hemostat to pluck the hair from the ear but only where I can see the end of the hemostat. My dogs are used to having their ears plucked and don't generally move (doing it quickly helps but I did start with fingers). I use the ear wash every time I groom them.

Met A New Breed Today But Can't Find The Proper Name
AmandaJ replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Now I wanna cry... Whats a Bearded Collie If it turns out to be a Russian - please let me know who has it - might be my second breed -
:) That would be perfect for me! Nobody else in Tas buy one! Shaar - What size do you need - I have one in my wardrobe - worn once! The Asian sizes are NOT European sizes.. Actually I have a few....I "out grew them"
-
Shaar - I agree on the change of coat TOTALLY - I was once told that the white gets wider...yeah right...in most cases on our breed the head blaze recedes with age .. on other parts the length of coat covers any minor "non conformance" ...each breed to it's own..and it depends on the "plucking"....as some do.. There is nothing better than a breeder who can answer the hard questions about the litter they have.

I'll get my head bitten off by some one - but what the hey... When you purchase a "show" pup from a respectable breeder , you should be purchasing a pup whose markings and colorings meet breed standard. Form changes as the pup grows - not much is guaranteed past markings at pup. Sometimes very experienced breeders can see potential at 7 to 8 weeks but show potential includes attitude. Shy pups don't do well - they draw back from judges, aggression is shunned... I've seen animals withdraw from smoking judges, hat wearers, "flouncy" blouses, loud noises. I've even seen animals withdraw from "apprehensive" judges. You need a "bomb" proof show dog these days. Perhaps that's not so silly...most households need "bomb proof dogs" - for a dogs sake!

Get her to the vet for a thyroid panel....if you can find one who will do a TT4ED better still

Knowledge of structure, form and function, breeding lines (phenotype and genotype), not a precise science - but research and understanding go a hell of a long way - a darn site further than blind ignorance.

Show dog only means the dog is within the standard.

I was actually tempted not to reply to this issue as many have their own beliefs in that which is law. Facts are: Regardless of whether a contract is in writing or not, verbal agreements still constitute a contract at law..the winner on verbals is the one who can provide the best backup to their argument - otherwise the paper version works. By law dogs are "goods" and the contract is entered into between purchaser and seller. Contracts therefore do not follow dogs, a new contract would be required to do so. You must also remember that 2 contracts exist in every case - the one provided by the seller (generally paper form) and the one by the buyer (intention, expectation etc) - verbal. Example - If I buy a Male for show, I would expect to be able to breed from him. Most show people have the dual intent. If the dog can not be used for breeding then the intent of the contract to purchase is breached (unless a clause in the written contract covers the event or the circumstances were unforeseen). Whether a contract is enforced is up to the individuals - small claims court is an inexpensive venue for settling issues as no lawyers are permitted. With regard to the specific pup....yes a temperament test is required - however I'd be tempted to have 2 conducted - 1 in the home environment with the child and other dog, and one in a different environment. Sometimes the aggressor is not at fault. Right now I think my Law Lecturer would be saying "by god I think she's mellowed - finally".

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!
AmandaJ replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'll be the first to bite the bullet and say - no one dog has the same allergies as the next they are as different as we are...however - my first comment still stands - has the vet provided any level of relief for the dog or is he/she still siphoning the wallet of the the owner with tests? -
SAS got a Q for you then - you clearly understand this far better than me - so I'm picking your brain. ..if the Th2 is a response to protein antigens, is it possible that the changes to the proteins themselves during manufacture (ingested in an altered state) are causing the level of adverse response we now see. Bearing in mind that the reason L-Tryptophan was removed from the market was the manufacture process - natural tryptophan is fine..altered states of proteins? Edited to say - I'm just getting into this subject......

Thankfully for us Beardies do not carry the MDR1 gene.

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!
AmandaJ replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Allergies with kibble are generally put down to the preservatives used in the mix. Some breeds experience difficulty with high protien diets. The protein increases the body temp and causes them to be itchy. Polish Lowlands and "red" coated breeds suffer from this. Most of those can be controled with low protein diets - below 18% -
Thanks SAS - that one goes into the folder.

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!
AmandaJ replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
In all this has your vet actually given the poor dog anything to ease the discomfort? We gave up looking for the allergens after 3 and just treat the symptoms to keep him comfortable. You can try phenergan or telfast 24hr (non drowsey). We use telfast as it appears to work better on our boy. -
It was the L-tryptophan. Will PM you thanks Erny

Hi Erny - Some of the human related side effects of spirulina are also caused by it increasing the bodies temperature. Increased body temp can lead to "sweats" and itchy skin. I guess there is no reason why it can't also do the same for dogs. You can buy L-tryptophan on line rather than using Spirulina (if it's the tryptophan you need) but it was taken off the market a while ago. The manufacturing process was linked to changes in the protein which caused cancer. Don't know what the difference in the process is now. I wouldn't mind having a read of you thesis if I may...
