I agree, if all those male owners didnt want us to show our females in season then the shows would be full of males only ! Why should I leave my girl at home just because you cannot control your male ? I can control mine ! I have also had exhibitors happy when they found out my girl was in season because it put their boy on his toes ! I always let everyone around me know my girl is in season and I try very hard not to toilet them close (some girls just have to mark though). And I always tell those in the lineup around me.

Can anyone tell me who the kelpie was ? Curious at to why it would have been non-awarded? seems like an interesting show.

Taking Phoenix back for ultrasound this weekend (hopefully, depending on car situation !!). She is now 6 weeks and showing NO signs of being pregnant. She is usually well and truly showing by now.

Hi Jakemon Definately talk to your breeder about what you want to do, she may be willing to work this out with you and find a stud dog suitable for your girl. I have sold bitches to people on breeders terms, with me getting a litter in my name, my cost etc, and given them a pup in return for whelping and bringing up the litter. I also know of other breeders who have done this, but most of them will whelp the litter themselves. Get everything worked out and make sure you are both clear on what each wants. What you are asking for is not unreasonable as long as you discuss everything with your breeder and obviously all tests are done for your breed. PRA and BAER are definately a must to test for before breeding your bitch. Also make sure the stud dog is done as well. KR

If you vaccinate at 8 weeks, what age do you let the pups go to their homes?

There is grooming and there is grooming LOL nothing better than seeing a correctly groomed and well presented dog ! But its the ones done with tons of hairspray and powdering that was what I was really referring to... Dogs leaving white foot prints as they run around the ring or a big puff of white powder if they stop for a shake ??? Why is so much product needed? Ive seen it used to make the dog appear to have more bone, more coat, change the outline, give a coarser coat... surely all this is 'changing the natural dog'. How can a judge get their hands through a coat full of spray or check legs and feet that are caked in powder ?? Trimming of dogs that shouldnt be trimmed to change their outlines and make their coats appear nicer ! And you are right... IF a good judge knows what they are doing... it shouldnt be a problem !!! But Ive seen many get caught up in a beautiful and correctly groomed dog and the thing could hardly get around the ring !!! But that is another topic altogether LOL

Yes, showing a desexed dog in an entire class is wrong... report them, but you need to prove it is desexed. Yes I am all for desexed dogs being shown... as many have mentioned they are progeny and showing what the parents can produce as breeding stock, but it has to be done legally. Apparently (and please correct me if I am wrong) Dogs Qld will not have neuter classes as they believe showing is to showcase breeding stock and you cannot breed with desexed dogs ?? So where does that leave our thoughts of shows are for judging to standard? I use the showring to further my breeding program... it is not just about having a fun day out with my doggy. As much as I love showing, it is a serious thing and if I see something I really like, I check the dog's pedigree and what the parents and siblings are doing in the show ring. Unfortunately I am not able to just see in people's backyards. I would be happy to look at a desexed dogs in the ring, really should be more of them out there. And Im sorry, but most desexed coated breeds that I have seen have really crap coats! If I found out I was competing against a desexed dog illegally I would be pissed off. But what REALLY gets up my nose is the blatant and illegal use of massive amounts of product in coated breeds and being beaten by these pretty coats (and sometimes inferior dogs) while I stand there with my plain, what you see is what you get, dog... It seems alot of judges like to put up the best groomed dog... not the best dog.

Welll... Finger crossed... Phoenix will be due about the 9th Feb... will do ultrasound on 5th Jan to confirm pregnancy This is a repeat mating that gave me my gorgeous boy Jasper !

I havent been here for a while... but I just had to have a little brag about Jasper My gorgous boy (CH Suthenskys Single N Luvn It PT) who started out life as a singleton pup has far exceeded my expectations of him so far. At 18 months of age he is already well over a third of his way to Grand !!! He is a multi class in group winner, as well as class in show (specialty) and Best in Group (Open show). He is also #5 in the DOL Best of breed national pointscore (#2 in QLD) and got to #4 in the Rising Star before hitting Intermediate Class He is not only pretty but also smart and works sheep like a pro !! Thanks for the info. I will definitely be following his progress with great interest!! Also, while I have a Kelpie expert in the room - do you know when Kelpie's ears are supposed to go 'up'? Hoover's 4months plus now and for a while it looked as though his left ear was On The Rise but it has sunk down again I'm not fussed because I love his ears whether up or down, but I was just curious. My Jasper's ears didnt go up until well into 4 months... but then again, because he was a show dog, he had a little help with some tape. It can depend on the size of the ear too... most of my dog's ears are up by 8 weeks, but those with the big 'uns can take a while... Seems the working dog's ears are getting bigger and bigger !

I have to say, I'm the opposite. I'm not a big Kelpie person (the lovely Hoover excepted, of course :D ) but I am extremely taken with the solid brown fellow in the OP's second photo. And Kelpie'srule's Jasper. I've never really seen the solid coloured dogs but they are seriously beautiful LOL thanks, the solid boy in the second photo is also of my breeding... that is Merlin (CH Suthenskys Sorcerer) :D

Ah ... Kelpie aren't supposed to be chunky because they're supposed to be able to walk on sheeps' backs. My puppy (here) would probably never be a good sheep dog because he's far too chunky for a working dog, but we love him anyway Yeah, the photos of working kelpies look much more like they have the structure same structure as our kiwi working farm breeds. The kelpies I've seen in real life look almost like little pointy eared labradors, or little chocolate coloured bears, something. That's probably also party to do with them being a bit fatter due to not being in working condition, I suppose. I think it also needs to be noted that i have seen quite a few solid coloured working kelpies and they look just like the show kelpie !!! this is why the WK people stopped breeding them ! Have a look back over the old pics of the kelpie... the WK's are getting leggier and skinnier and the solid show kelpies are much like the solids back in the day they parted... (yes some have got heavier, but not all ) I saw a black WK in the back of a ute at a trial and had to double take as I thought he was my black dog Shamus... Ive also had a guy tell me he had a solid red working kelpie that looked exactly like a girl i was showing.....

:D Oh ... I have so much love for Jasper's red and tan son (look at those little golden Kelpie eyebrows! :D, even though he is still just a cute little blob. I can't wait to see how grows up and it would be so great if he's able to be 'shown' - yay for two tones. Thanks for sharing the information and the photos! Is it common for a two tone to just 'appear' from a show Kelpie breeding like that? What a gorgeous surprise. ETA: I did wonder about the chunkiness of some of the show Kelpies - wasn't sure about the rational - health reasons? Was the lankiness of the working lines not regarded as healthy? The two tone must be behind both parents... and in this case it is.. Jasper will also be having another mating soon where red and tans will be possible again. I will definately keep everyone updated on this little red and tan guy Basically the standard says the kelpie should be 'lithe and athletic' so why are people breeding them to look like cattle dogs or labradors !!!???

Ive only quickly red through some of the comments... but just wanted to say... My boy Jasper, just sired a litter of pups, of which two are RED AND TAN !!! I am hoping to get one of these pups and will be showing it... I also have a fawn dog, Devin, who is doing well in the ring... he was just awarded two runnerup of breeds on the weekend under International judges, with 8 entries and a Grand Champion !! His brother, who is blue, also does well in the show ring... so yes, the colours are out there, but they are not always good dogs... to show a coloured Kelpie you need to have exceptional breeding behind it and bring the colour in. In my mind... if there are 7 colours, they should all be shown. I think the showies originally went to solid colours to get away from the working dogs.. and the WK people did the same, they stopped breeding the solid colours so they couldnt be associated with the show people... sad really. Also my boy Jasper is excellent on sheep ! I also think it is disgusting the way the show kelpies are becoming such a heavy dog ! It is criminal and there is no way they could ever work like that. For those few Jasper fans out there he has added another feather to his cap... he is not only a great show dog, but he is an awesome working dog (gaining his PT title in style) but as of yesterday he is now a Daddy !!!! 4 boys and 1 girl... and the exciting part is, 2 of the boys are RED AND TAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
