  1. To cut a long story short, the breeder of my young desexed golden has agreed to put him on Main register so I can show him in Neuter (when they are offered). Who would I contact in the Golden Retriever Club to suggest they run the neuter class for their next specialty? Is it the secretary?
  2. We'll be there with Willow, apparently there is an Irish Red & White Setter entered, I'm really excited about seeing him/her as well, I did look at getting one for the show ring early last year, but the timing wasn't right.... I then discovered the LH wei's
  3. X2... but he wants a LH Wei not a field
  4. You need to check with the DNA testing companies to see if the have a DNA test for PRA in Weis. Its available for a lot of breeds now. Ok great, thank you.
  5. ok cool, so PRA would show up in a DNA test, is that correct? I thought it was just a yearly test, but if it can be done via DNA test, all the better.
  6. Just wondering, in general, what is the minimum age breeders test (if not genetically cleared) for PRA? Is it different for different breeds? I wanted to test Willow (LH Wei), my show dog for PRA, as well hips/elbows. I know I have to wait for the hips/elbows, but not sure about eyes.
  7. I had huge trouble putting weight on Willow, she was too skinny, her hip bones were showing. She doesn't like her dry much by itself and was very active. Another show person said to add rice every night, just at night. It is just a filler really, but it got the weight on Willow. She is looking really good now, I have stopped adding the rice, but she does get sardines every night instead.
  8. yes, we could teach them not to do it, but they sleep in the kitchen/family room so it makes it difficult. If they are in the way too much we put them in the lounge room, we have baby gates separating areas of our house, one is permanently closed, be the other remains open during the day, and closed at night... so we don't get nightly visitors!
  9. My Wei follows me to the toilet, so do my goldens, even the cats tend to do it, no privacy in this house. Having said that, they all like to be in the same room as you, and will follow you if you go into another room 9 times out of 10, but they are happy lying near you rather than anything else. They don't really get underfoot. The only time I find it a problem is when we are cooking, they tend to lie in the middle of the floor between the stove and the bench!
  10. If you really want a wei, have a look at the long hair's. While not always the case, they tend to be a bit more laid back than their short coated cousins. They still need to run, play, do zoomies and what not, but I think they are a little easier to handle. Having said that, I've never owned a short coat. Besides that, the long hairs are much better looking
  11. Do you mean a Border Collie or a Rough Collie.... like lassie? I think a collie (both rough and smooth) was suggested to you, but I'd definately not recommand a border collie.
  12. Oh I totally agree they can be destructive, hence the reason I said to talk to a breeder about this when buying a puppy. My 12.5 year old golden only stopped being destructive in the last year or so. BUT saying that, my 3 year old hasn't really destroyed much at all. He is a barker though, but I think he does it for attention, he'll bark at horses, or the dogs next door when they are barking, but he'll stop for a few seconds and look to see what I am doing. Since ignoring him he hasn't been so bad. Having said all that, he wasn't a perfect puppy, the first week I had him I wanted to send him back, he was quite full-on... in stark contrast to my long hair.... My Long hair is now 6 months, while she still doesn't chew, she is starting to test boundaries and this is where training comes into place! I never had the feeling of wanting to give her back though. I know that you want to experience a puppy with your kids, but given your wife is not so enthralled with the idea, she is more likely to be turned around with a mature well trained dog.
  13. My wei would probably kill birds if she could catch them.... maybe when she gets a bit older she will, but they CAN get on with cats....
  14. I actually agree with a golden, if you can get over the shedding. They can be destructive as well, so if you went the puppy road, talk to your breeders to find the best match. My first golden was an only child for 3 years, and while I wasn't gone 10 hours a day, I was at uni and some days I'd be gone atleast 6 hrs. She was also an outside dog mostly initially, as my parents wouldn't let her inside very regularly... she coped ok with it. She could be destructive though. My latest golden isn't very destructive at all, he never has been.
  15. A wei would be too needy I would think, similar to the Viz. I have a long hair wei, and while in general they aren't as needy as the smooths, she would not be happy without human OR other dog company for long hours. She is only 6 months old, but is happy to lie on the lounge asleep for most of the day, get her outside and she is a dog that is on the go playing running and generally expending her energy. Labs surprisingly shed a lot. Almost as much as the goldens I'd say, their hair is just not as long. I looked after one for a month, and the amount of shedding he did surprised me. I don't have any experience with staffy's, but I thought they were a people dog... don't quote me on that though.
  16. $4 per week. I think there is a once off registration fee but can't remember how much it is.... it's not much, maybe $20 or so???
  17. That's great news. When Sascha first went on medication, it was like I had a puppy again, a 6 year old dog running around like she was 6 months old I used to give the tablets in a bit of cheese, or sausage initially, you learn to give the tablets, and they learn to take them as well if your aunt doesn't want to give it in food. I stand behind them so they can't back away from me easily, put my hand under the jaw and tilt the head upwards, at the same time holding the mouth open, then with the other hand put the tablet as far back near the throat as I can, close the mouth and hold it shut until they swallow, and they have to swallow eventually. Probably not the best or most graceful way to do it, but it works.
  18. I don't have the number, but take my wei here. Beginners class is 6pm, goes for half an hour only, and runs for 4 weeks, the first week you are not supposed to take your dog (even though I did), the first week is usually the first Monday of the month. Then you move up to the 6:30pm class after 4 weeks.
  19. I'm so glad I have really good vets. When Sascha was diagnosed, she had full bloodwork done, the results came back that it could be addisons, it fitted with all her other symptons perfectly, and she was put on medication straight-away. She only had a couple of bouts of needing her medication adjusted, and she never went to a specialist in her life, she died just short of her 12th birthday after having addisons for 6 years of a totally unrelated cause. Forgot to say, good luck with it all, and hoping your aunties dog is getting the care he needs now.
  20. Definately not over-reacting. Do you know what the levels were?
  21. Thant's good to know Teebs, thanks for that. I just rang them and she is still very ill and looking very lethargic. They have sent her home without any medication, waiting to have the next blood test. I offered to drive them back to the vet with her, but they are going to wait and see if she brightens up a bit. If she doesn't they will take her back in the morning. What the hell????? No medication??? what kind of vet sends a dog home who has addisons without medication. My old girl had addisons, if she was very lethargic it would be a sign her addisons was unstable and needed checking. IF it is Addisons, she could go into an addisson coma. Is the vet sure it is addisons or is only guessing until she has more blood tests?
  22. I saw this Irish Setter a while ago, and noticed that it was listed again, I have to admit I thought it was the same person advertising her all along. Thank you for taking the time to check. I messaged the poster last time but no reply. I hope this poor girl gets into rescue, I'd take her here but don't think we can handle another dog at the moment, even temporarily.
  23. I'm happy to do it He's gorgeous!!!
  24. Well my dogs were not far off that ( mind you was for two and from USA and a top kennel) thats everything, travel, tests, 6 months boarding, qtine here and the dogs and assocaited costs. I have flight details and costs from the UK for a 4 kilo dog and that is a lot cheaper as no boarding and lighter dog, flights and tets are expected to be $5000. hmmm, for two I would expect that. It sounds like where you import from is also a factor, I can imagine that importing a wei from germany would be a lot more expensive then getting one from Sweden.
