  1. I saw it too, beautiful boy RIP. Shows how brain washed cops are.. "oh he's a well natured dog, it's not his fault"etc.. "but he's illegal". So they kill him! how can you reason with people like that? people that belive in BSL remind me of all the George Bush followers, or the people of the mid west (usa) where they all believe in whatever the TV tells them. (just makin similarities on the lines of peoples thought patterns, not a slur against the yanks...even though most of them don't know where USA is on a map, don't blame me, blame that miss world contendent that said the reason for this was because american school children didn't have maps) It's dispicable, we're supposed to be an advanced country but here we are behaving like North Korea or China. Then that segment on Coal seem gas and all those people struggling, what is the government doing?!
  2. I'm sure they were thinking about saving their dog and fighting BSL, they've sure saved a lot of dogs which is more than most people on here, and by no means thought about putting the amstaff in the spotlight, that was the GCCC so build a bridge and get over it.
  3. Wow, interesting read, sad to here about the cats...... I guess though a lot of dog owners can't really trust their 2 dogs not to fight occasionally, and this can end in some serious harm, so i wouldn't ever trust my 2 with other animals. The older one has a lot of drive, and the pup is learning a few bad habits, but i have alot more control over him, we have a lot of dingos out the back and the older bitch just wants to chase them (she has caught up with a few and just rounds them up makes them scared and walks away..?), the dingos have managed to tear up a few domestic dogs in the area so this is not a good thing. has anyone tried e-collars 'cause i'd like to know some educated opinions from people who've used them, i hear they can have great results, i've read a lot about them and would purchase one but there is no-one near where we are NT who is experienced enough to help train me.
  4. Hi all, we live in the NT and as it's so hot my dogs get a frozen piece of meat/bones for treats. They happily gobble it down frozen. I'm just wondering if there's any harm in doing this? i.e is the frozen meat not so good when it hits their stomachs.? Thing is, if i thaw it out there's a good chance they'll just swallow it whole and look at me as if to say, "is that all we get!", generally it's a rump off cut about the size of my fist. any feed back would be great!
  5. Got to agree with you Ozpit, i have seen planty of real deal pits here, well bred, well trained and well nurtured.
  6. Why is it a lesser possibilty that would happen? does anyone read other people posts and take it on board? Firstly having a dog running around the street probably means it's not been well trained or looked after, which leads to all the other factors, unsocialised, not desexed, the development of DA etc... that's what makes a dog rush and dominate other dogs. What I am saying is that Bull breeds are not the only breeds allowed to run around by irresponsible owners and are not looked after properly, but do we see the same amount of attacks by other breeds in the same position??? No as they're not publicised as much. Bull breeds covers so many breeds, then there's all the cross breeds etc.. so it's way to broad to generalise, but as for percentages i don't believe they're any more likely to be aggressive than any other, i live in an area full of dogs that are always off lead and outside their property and get rushed nearly every walk and not one of them is a bull breed of any sort, in fact the most common occurence in my experience is with cattle dogs and their crosses. Though a beautiful rednose pit did jump off his ute and come running up for cuddles.

  8. in no order; french bulldog, boxer, staffy, apbt, (favourite) dalmation, dane, mastiffs of any sort bull arab would love to meet a boston terrier but havent yet jack russell
  9. Yep the Americans now have their American bully clubs, not even close to to the original, most are short and square mastiff looking dogs but they chop the ears off to avoid the big floppy look. My male is way over size and has 7-10kgs over his litter mates at 35kgs,(dam 20kgs, sire 32kgs) well proportioned at about 20-21 inches, even the breeder was surprised how big he is as the biggest dog she's had is about 28kgs tops, and most of her dogs wouldn't exceed 24kgs.
  10. I admit i have rose tinted glasses a little with staffies et al, but having been around DA dogs all my life i've always been fully aware of their behavior, and i do have to remind myself that not everyone has the same experience, so i apoloige for being a little narky. Havin 2 large dogs and a 7 month old girl i'm now more paranoid than ever due to all the media stuff, even though my dogs are great around her, so i'm trying to ensure they enjoy having her here.
  11. You have owned soooo many dogs, how old are you? i'm inclined to feel that you may be telling porkies. we get that you don't like staffies and apbt's, maybe you should change your name to BSL. You are sounding rather narky, don't you think? Not telling porkies at all, that would be a complete waste of time and just too boring for me. I like to say it as it very well is. My hubby and I have always owned 2 to 3 breeds at a time and given that we have been married for a little over 20 years adds up to a fair few breeds. The two staffies that we owned did not stay with us till old age; one was rehomed and the other was put to sleep. The boxer was a rescue and would have been roughly 4-5 years of age (just a guess as they were not too sure) when we adopted him from the RSPCA and he lived with us till the age of 14. Don't call me a Liar, hate liars. Ok i believe you, but don't you think you have an issue with these breeds? you're entitled to your opinion but you're sounding like a broken record and no matter how many times the majority of people say, 'ownership, responsibilty" , you seem to want to keep breed bashing. I'm not saying that all bullies are innocent, but neither is any breed.
  12. Thanks for that Jackie but I must say I have my reservations about those tests. I haven't clicked on the link but have read the bit you copied and pasted, I will do so tomorrow. TO say that the pitbull had the lowest PSI sounds far fetched to me. Can't help but wonder if Dr. Barr is a pitbull aficionado You don't want to believe it because it's not what goes along with your theories. APBT are the smallest dog of the 3 why wouldn't they have the lowest? it's plain physics.

  14. APBT were responsible for 8 attacks last year in QLD, some 400 less than other breeds .... yet they're considered the worst..? Not sure where boxers came in, however with their boystrous nature and the laws that state what constitues an attack (ie if someone feels threatened by your dog they can complain and that's it your dog can be classed dangerous) it wouldn't surpise me if they had a few mentions.
  15. My parents bred boxers and i grew up with them sleeping in my bed, great dogs. However mine were extremely DA, both bitches and more hardwork than the bull breeds i've had. my sister currently has a 4 year old boxer 34kgs, bad tempered, DA, HA.. no never to be bred, and only started these traits about a year ago.. so actually in my experience the boxers have been more DA than apbt's. And as for inflicting more injuries, no more than any other dog of it's weight and size. My neighbours rotti who was absolutely enormous and would chew through a cow leg in under a minute could do way more damage than any pit i've met, but i'm not on here giving rottis a hard time. Don't believe all the hype, they're just a dog, albeit one that needs a committed responsible owner, as every dog deserves.
  16. Every dog is capable of serious injury, you must really hate bull breeds, do you have some vendetta against them? 'cause all you seem to post is negative, bigoted, one sided comments. All dogs need training, it's that thing that most owners seem to negate, especially owners of dogs that think their dog is a little person. There's a hundred breeds that can do as much harm as any bull breed could but i don't see you slagging them off?
  17. There are plenty of DA little dogs out there, yapping their little heads off and seriously wanting to kill other dogs, but it is rare that these little dogs cause more than an annoyance. Their behaviour is unacceptable to me, yet society does generally accept their DA behaviour. Contrast that with a large dog (of any breed) that has the same attitude. There you have a dog that should be muzzled when out in public, and should be kept in a very secure enclosure when unattended. It is a dog that will kill other people's dogs, because it has the physical capacity and the instinct do do it. Pitbull people need to address this instead of attempting to invalidate people's fears. What are responsible owners of these dogs prepared to concede if they really are committed to keeping their breed going in this country? I have never seen a pitbull as out of control as i have a SWF, even DA dogs don't exhibit aggression to all dogs. Of course we're going to try to invalidate peoples fears especially if they've been formed by mass hysteria. And what is it that we're supposed to concede? we all know they can be DA, anyone who owns any bull breed and doesn't admit so is a fool, big deal, that is why it's more about education and responsible ownership.
  18. So you're saying you're dogs will behave no matter how much another dog annoys it? Pitbull breeders are more than aware of their traits and will happily take any bad stock out of the breeding program. You see the common misconception is that all apbt breeders are morons, sure enough the bad ones are there but nowhere near as many as other breeds, i wish people would stop harping on about the apbt like is some flesh eating monster that is totally uncontrollable.. i mean how on earth do they breed, what with all that dog aggression just waiting to be let loose and kill.. if people would stop humanising dogs and think that they should all be friends we'd be a lot better off.
  19. This was in todays NT news. i hope this isn't a sign of things to come. Territory looms as pit bull capital ALYSSA BETTS May 9th, 2010 DARWIN could become the pit bull capital of Australia now that every state has banned the dog from breeding. Tasmania is the last to fall in line with the rest of the states - on July 1 it will classify the beefy canine a restricted breed and require all pure breds to be desexed. The NT and Australian Capital Territory are the only places in the country where the dogs can procreate legally. Ark Animal Hospital vet Stephen Cutter said it was possible Tasmania's move would lead to a jump in pit bull breeding in the NT. "But there's a lot of breeding going on here already," he said. "They'd probably be in the top three or four breeds - not necessarily pure bred, but every second cross breed dog has a significant amount of pit bull in it." The NT Government dodged Northern Territory News questions as to whether it would consider following Tasmania's lead. Local Government Minister spokeswoman Ursula Raymond said it was an issue for councils. Dr Cutter and Dogs NT are not keen to see the Territory go down the same route as the other states. Dogs NT president Graham Doyle said individual dogs should be punished for attacks, not entire breeds. He said pit bulls were not even a recognised breed - they were mongrels with a fancy moniker that allowed them to be sold at a higher price. "Any paperwork people have saying it is a pure breed is something someone's done up on a computer," he said. Dr Cutter said there was no single defining characteristic that made a pit bull, and no DNA test for it either. He said this would make it a nightmare in deciding when to enforce pit-bull-specific rules. But he said pit bulls and pit bull crosses were "significantly over-represented" in dog bites and dog attacks. "They have a relatively high tolerance of pain and they often love to fight." He said any legislative changes relating to desexing should cover all types of dogs, not just pit bulls.
  20. Abigail, i hope you're actually reading these posts and learning something from them? There is nothing wrong with prey drive or DA just ownership and management Staranis put it plain and simple and IMO exactly how it is. Yes ILk, some people write utter rubbish.
  21. Never going to happen. Labs don't have a genetic predisposition for fighting with or killing other dogs. Fact is (and one of the reasons BSL debates are often unrealistic) is the often blatant refusal by the ABPT's staunch supporters to accept or acknowledge what they were bred for and what they still have a predisposition to do if not raised very carefully. For the most part.. the amount of socialising a Lab needs to remain dog friendly is vastly different to the work needed to establish and maintain a dog friendly ABPT (and yes, I know there are dog friendly ABPT out there... but it isn't the 'norm' for them to be accepting of most other dogs off the bat). Labs are bred for their amiable nature... and always have been. (yep, there are some not very nice ones out there.. but it is quite uncommon to find one inherently dog aggressive). WELL SAID Bull breeds have always drawn me to them, from boxers to staffies to pitbulls.. we all get something different from our pets. I thought labs were bred as gun dogs? i actually have seen them working in trials believe it or not!! fit healthy working labs... I think all dogs are bred for their friendly nature, i haven't met a pity breeder who wants to breed a HA dog, as APBT posted DA is something that doesn't bother me too much (though i've always trained my dogs to be dog friendly). Having a DA dog no matter what the breed, and there's plenty of them just makes it a little harder when out in public with other dog owners who think all dogs are dog friendly, doesn't work that way in nature and sure as hell doesn't work at the beach!
  22. Over the years I met some pretty bad examples of the breed. I know that it was not the dogs' fault but the 'colourful' characters that owned them, but still I kinda lost interest in them, which is pitty because I agree they can be great dogs in right hands. I think that has been my experience with SWF. I followed a link to www.pbrc.net and they have some good educational advice on 'poppys place' tag, which we're going to take to our local school and parents group, and hopefully make a difference to them and their parents point of view, teach a little bit and hope it spreads.
  23. Why are you not a fan of the breed? not that you have to love all breeds, just curious.. I think they're great, but again all dogs are different and approach each dog as a dog not a breed.
  24. APBT's are were used in the 911 search and rescue and are also used as police dogs overseas, and until BSL also in South Aus. They're also used as customs dogs in the US.
  25. I'm 250km's east of darwin, not much to do unless you're a keen fisherman, only surf in the wet season (it's killing me not living near the waves) when people say it's expensive, it surely is and unless you have a high paying job you wont get ahead financially. many place to walk dogs, beaches are great, just watch out for the crocs, they have stalked dogs on their walkies before. lots of alcohol related issues, but hey what city doesn't.. it's bogan central so you just gotta go with it.. lots of sporting clubs which is great.. you gotta weigh up what it is that makes you tick.
