Don't people have the right to own whatever breed they choose? it's the law that causes all the dramas and mainly to law obiding citizens and family pets.

So yesterday it was a pitbull, now its a SBT.. yesterday it attacked the lady then the man, now they say the man entered the back yard and the dog attacked then bit the lady when he tried to get the dog off him... Another story full of heresay, of which forms public opinion, why not say, "dog attacks strange man enetering yard", because i bet that is closer to the truth than,"pitbull mauls couple in back yard". Another avoidable attack, i wish people would really consider dog ownership and what it entails. This dog possibly could've been a great pet with the right owners, now it's dead.

Say WHAT?Dogs are a product of the breeding. Whilst it might it might be the fault of the morons who have been doing the breeding, the fact remains that we now have entire breeds that simply have no place in society. They have been bred for “aggressive” temperaments, sharp teeth, and extremely powerful jaws. It’s all very well to say “punish the deed,” but what if the misdeed is breeding the animals in the first place. The problem is that some dogs, nomatter how well trained and socialised, are simply too dangerous. That’s why you should never leave a Rotti with children. Rotti’s are beautiful dogs, and those bred for temperament are affectionate and make great pets. We had a neighbour who had Rotti’s and he would bring them around to socialise with our kids. They were lovely big pups, but he always kept a choker on them, and he was a huge guy, more than capable of clean-lifting the digs if needed. BUT, if they do snap, they can do terrible damage with their powerful jaws. That’s why I believe that breeding should be regulated, and ownership of such dogs should be restricted to responsible owners. Contrast that with something like a retriever. They have simply never been bred to behave aggressively, and with their soft mouth and round teeth they couldn’t hurt someone even if they wanted to. The only sense this post made was ownership of dogs should be restricted to responsible owners... however this should be all dogs!! As for breeding for sharp teeth? or retrievers and their soft mouth and round teeth!? better not give them a bone they'd only suck on it!! You're completely wrong, saying entire breeds have no place in society, pitbulls for example have a definate place in society, besides wonderful pets they make great therapy dogs, police dogs and customs dogs so i think they certainly have a place. How about there should be no place for Human aggressive animals, that sounds a bit fairer don't you think?

Got our collars form pigdogsupplies.com they're lasting well, and certainly are in the elements daily, made to size. I did see a website called rogue royalty.com.au heaps of nice stuff, but the nice stuff doesn't last long with dogs who like to chew each other collars as a game. Beds.. ah!! stopped using them as they kept getting eaten, now the dogs have ownership of an armchair each which they don't eat, though i'm thinking of getting them one of the Kiddies fold out lounges about $20 from Kmart see how long it lasts.

Wouldn't this encourage BYB? I'm all for testing to ensure only healthy dogs are being bred etc.. but jo blogs down the road mightn't be so picky about where he gets his dog from.
-
I thought this too, though last time he was there for 4 days and came back looking great..? the girl is a much better doer for sure, she could eat wood and still look great.

Hi all, I've just been away and my young male who was 35kgs (trim, not desexed) came back from the kennels very skinny looking, but still healthy looking, though his coats a little dry. My partner reckons the food we give him (eagle pack) may cause water retention, or just that bloated look, i never noticed it but did notice his loins weren't neatly tucked up, but now after 12 days in the kennels where he was fed chicken, rice and veggies all home made, his tummy is all tight as a dogs should be, this is why we were thinking that the food may be too much for him or making him bloated..? Our bitch actually looks like she put on a little weight after being fed the same. So can biscuits cause that bloated look? or water retention? any thoughts?

What Breeds Wouldn't You Recommend For A First Time Onwer?
geo replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Any dog has the potential to be a great first time dog. It all depends on the owners and how the dog fits their personality, commitment and lifetsyle. Working dogs from working lines may need a little more effort but that's not to say they can't be anyones first dog. All buyers should get to know the parents of the pup they are buying to get a better understanding of how they can expect their puppy to behave, this along with providing all the things a growing dog needs to become a good adult dog. -
That is assuming the dog behaves unpredictably. That isn't always the case with aggression. Unpredictable in the fact that, they could play nice or they could take a disliking at which point i could easily see that they're going to get aggro. All dog owners should know how to read their dogs body language and aversion methods.
-
Surely this is a "no brainer". why would you do either? my past and occasionally my present dogs can be DA, why would i let them off the lead with other dogs if their behavior is going to be unpredictable. When no-one is around they get let off, i choose my times and places carefully, they're friendly most of the time, sometime too friendly which can lead to problems. As for HA dogs, i feel shouldn't be off lead near people.

Hi everyone, i have a friend who has a 9 week old Bernese Mountain Dog and she's wondering what would be best to feed her? she has the ability to shoot buffalo, wallaby etc but if you have any suggestions i'd love to hear...

Yep that was a quote from John, I was just saying that it was more than what some people believe Dogs queensland done and of course the ex president of the qld amstaff club. if people want to look out for their own, fine, but John has gone above and beyond and is trying to help fix the bigger issue of BSL which it seems alot of people with "unrestricted" dogs couldn't give a toss about. If only more people took a leaf out of his book we'd be a lot better off.
-
FYI, a quote from the BSL forum. As for Mel G, the ex- president of the Qld Amstaff club, I still have her letter of support sent to her club members, unknowingly sent to me. The knife wound in the back has healed up nicely, and everyone knows where you stand on BSL and good luck with your new breed of dogs, Boston Terriers, I hear. Its good to see that in the last minutes of all this you come to take the full credit, it shows you are good for something Dogs Qld, thanks for not supporting us as well and yes I do not want to be in your papered club membership. I am happy to support all dog owners regardless of breed or pedigree, so I completely understand you withdrawing any support as per your email. Tango as we all know has no papers, so funding and support should only go to your members, and to hell with those other dog owners…

Hon.d.boyle Kill Amstaffs Set Pit Bulls Free?
geo replied to tybrax's topic in General Dog Discussion
Great, let us know how it goes. I hope the police do their job better than the council. -
Yes seperate for the purposes of the animal control act, (which basically is no amendment as nothing will have to change as amstaffs aren't mentioned), but how can this be when they've argued thay're the same? how will they know an amstaff from a pitbull... how can they possibly tell? how can they not overlap? ....... is it all lookalike mongrels will be declared pitbulls and only papered amstaffs safe from BSL. As for it going to federal court to enable pitbull ownership i don't think that is the case, just because they're not allowed for import doesn't make them illegal if you get my drift. ie they're legal here in the NT and ACT.
-
And to Kylie Chivers and John Mokomoko (and all of us who sent letters every week) for continually proving that hard work and perseverance pays off. Without them continually working hard to rid QLD of BSL, and proving several points along the way this may never have happened so quickly.

Oh this just gets better!! what a twist! what i didn't like was Cr Dawns statement inferring that pitbulls can't be trained to make good pets whereas amstaffs can be. (well that's how i read it) So if the Judge says "they're the same", council said they're the same, now they say amstaffs are all good, they can't ID pitbulls or amstaffs, what the hell are they going to do? Even before DNA testing whereo and mau, they should just give them back as they can't possibly win a case with all the things they've said, now amstaffs are safe... If i was their owners i'd be at the pound with my lawyer demanding them back. I hope all the people who bagged out Kylie & Jon and will now come on this forum and congratulate them for doing such a good job and standing up for all dogs and the people who aren't as law savvy as they are. -

geo replied to tybrax's topic in General Dog Discussion
As they have done this without witnesses and being signed off on by the owners I would get their lawyer to immediately draw up a letter of complaint and ask for a re-test with their presence. GCCC what a bunch of complete w**kers!!!! -
What state was this in? It's funny they say an increase on last years numbers but statistics are all subjective, and of course what exactly means an attack.. people wont report being rushed by a SWF but will definately report being barked at by a staffy. Sounds like another way that the councils are gunning for staffies, probably the most populus dog in australia and certainly one of the most cross bred dogs. I hate stats like this as they serve no purpose but to fuel the BSL fire, and scare the public totally without merit.

Maybe you had a sympathetic ACO, they are out there, just not sure how many.... -
I can't get my dogs interested in the Black kongs, unless there is food in them, but they wont chew it. Seems they don't want to chew anything that they can't destroy.. Tennis balls get them going and so does rope, which they're not allowed as they eat it aswell. My staffy was a mad chewer, but the two i have now just ain't that into it, oh unless we've just bought him a new bed.. which promptly gets eaten by the next morning, so it's the tiles for him only!! Golden canes get a good work out, all the half dead or 'soon to be dead' fronds get ripped off and shredded when they decide to show off, generally if they haven't had a lot of exercise.
-
Ah the voice of reason as always Lo Pan, i agree. My 1 year old is still learning about strangers, he is a little scared if they approach him and i'm not with him (ie he barks at my one neighbour but not the other and never when i'm in the garden and never when the older bitch is in the garden..?) though he's quite happy with women for some reason. Same with children, loves our baby, likes others when he gets to know them but when new people enter the house he's always stand offish. I wonder if this rotti was just startled, scared.. not making excuses just wondering why.

Again news aganecies relying on peoples opinions instead of facts, and they can't hide their Bias towards how much they feel everyone should hate pitbulls. Poor child, where were the parents, poor chained up dog, stupid owner... same ol' story
-
You didn't even mention him in your first post, you were just outraged that people could believe it wasn't a pitbull. I know where you're coming from it happens all the time on here, like you said people jumping to defend them, but history has proven them right time and again. No, it's not right to imply innocent dogs, but when is it right to imply any dog attack as a pitbull, which more often than not is exactly what happens. I feel you took Mr Linkes comments out of context, and that is your perspective, whereas I feel he was merely explaining what happens at nearly every dog attack where a pitbull has been implicated. He didn't say it couldn't have been a pitty, just that people are mistaken when it comes to breed ID. It's the same with SWF's I couldn't pick one of them or their crosses, they're all SWF's to me, i'd be glad to have someone like Mr Linke point out what it could've been.
