Huskies Maul Dog Owner's Jack Russell To Death In Savage Attack
geo replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in In The News
Obviously a few people on this thread have no idea about the animals they own. Stop putting human emotions and expectations onto dogs. These dogs were just doing what all dogs can do, they are not "murderers, mutilators, killerse etc.." they are dogs. I mean what is the point of joining a forum if you can't read and learn something from the posts. A very sad situation but these things will continue to happen and PTS these 2 dogs will solve nothing. Yes the owner should be made to compensate the lady and have some restrictions on his dogs in public and definately a more secure yard... -

People will learn alot from Cosmolo's post, dogs do not automatically kill when they see "prey" it's a whole range of things that can set them into drive and when you understand this you can better train your dog. My dogs have killed lizards, they've chased roos, chooks would sure fascinate them, dogs they're ok with but not always.. these things I know so i take precautions for them. Though it certainly won't comfort the poor JRT or the owner. -
I don't think anyone is saying that Stonebridge. My dogs are also the lowest in the pecking order, and my daughter too can take a ball from his mouth and hand feed them as she thinks this is a great way of not having to eat her food! (she is certainly not allowed near their food bowls) However no matter how much I or you or anyone else trains their dogs it is still not a good idea to have a child near a dogs food bowl when feeding as no dog can be trusted 100% The dog in question probably only gave a warning snap but that sure is enough to cause a lot of damage.

Sandra I think we have our wires crossed.. selling one thing as another is false you're correct. I meant that if someone wants to call an amstaff (that has dual papers in the states) a pitbull then they're well within their rights to do so. Have dual reg'd dogs have been imported and then registered with the AKNC?
-
Greytmate summed it up, "Rank is fluid depending on the value of the resource and how easily it can be obtained." I have 2 dogs and they guard different things, my wife is the boss of one and can take bones off her, but when i try she gets defensive, but i still can I am the boss of the other and can take whatever i want of him as can my wife, though we never let our daughter near the dogs when they're eating!! I did find when teaching them to let their food go that it can make them guard it even more and make a bad situation worse. Siks: you just may be the best dog trainer in the world.

Look in a perfect world you may be right, If my 2 escaped they would love to play with people but people may be scared so that is the dogs fault.. if they saw a large dog off lead they would no doubt run upto it and have a sniff, but can anyone be 100% i think not. What about wildlife do you include this in your thinking? as I can assure you many people with dogs on this forum may have had their beloved pet kill a lizard, snake or bird.. does that mean they are unsafe pets and be PTS? Maybe they were predictable and the owners knew this and housed them correctly.. i'm not entirely sure but the story read as though they didn't know the fence was damaged, if they did then yes shame on them. -
Yep I'm aware of these things, but it still doesn't make it false and it doesn't mean people are selling something under false pretense. So if I was really hung up on the fact that my dog had to be apbt i would find someone whose imported a dual rego'd dog. Many people out there are calling amstaffs pits just to sound tough.. why i don't know, as amstaffs can do that all by themselves. and many believe thay are the same, 2 very convincing arguments and too much to get into on this thread. As for foreign registries some are very strict and others really don't mean much. I think you can rego first generation pits with teh APBR with only photographic proof for evidence..

I'm sure some imported Amstaffs have been dual registered, is that "paper hanging"?

I totally agree. It doesn't matter who let the dogs out. Unless the owners can guarantee that they will be enclosed 27/4 in the house or in a fully enclosed dog-run and only allowed off the property wearing muzzles, they should be PTS. With this one incident they have proven that they are a danger to other animals and are not suited to an urban environment (and indeed a rural environment where a neighbour would be entitled to shoot the dogs if they threatened livestock). I think every situation has to be dealt with individually and sadly there is no clear cut way to address these incidents. The owners may well be very responsible people and to have their dogs let out by someone else is NOT their fault. We live in an area of lots of roaming dogs and dingoes, and if many of the dogs in the area were let out of their yards could pose a threat to other dogs, especially if their is 2 of them. My friends dogs were let out by school kids walking by!! "Such acts of aggression" are sadly what all dogs are capable of even nice family pets, when people understand that every one will be safer. A very sad situation. -
There are some good breeders in the NT, no doubt they'd like to do the right thing and register with a legit registry in here in Aus. There are plenty rego'd with councils as they are legal in the NT and ACT.
-
Depends where you live and who's responsible for most crimes and attacks in your area, which can lead people to fear some races more than others. Same as a lone Aboriginal walking alone at night may fear bumping into 5 white fellas, or females being followed by men etc..
-
Good dogs you have their Tilly! I know our girl is very friendly with strangers, the boy not so much.. I have absolutely no idea how they'd react if something were to happen. Though at night time they're alot more alert and weary of people.

Yep if only people saw past a name. He looked lovely!

Pork Pies Or Lies The General Public Tell Us
geo replied to freundhund's topic in General Dog Discussion
Great thread! It's like chinese whisper, someone says something some dumb ass believes them!! then proceeds to tell the world like they're experts! My DA staffy rescue: "oh go on let him off to play with our dogs" said the lady at the beach, "no he'll attack your dogs" i say, "oh he'll be ok off the lead" she says.. At this point I'm tempted just to prove my point.. but I don't. "it's just because he's on a lead really" she says. I walk off, all dogs still wagging tails. He does have doggy friends now and after lots of training is much better. Oh and the amount of, lock jaw comments.. unbelievable. -

do you have pics of her parents? I swear one AB hybrid I saw was huge! are you expecting her to be big? -
Yes Jed I have. My response was more to point out the context of the comment made (like maybe tatzelwurm may not know why the puppies were like they were or were they projecting there own feelings onto the puppies as the owners were bad and they must be agressive.) Sure some litters may do this and by no means is this limited to fighting dogs. I don't think it is the norm though even with fighting lines. Some people like to breed pbs with lots of drive etc.. which there in lies the problem that some people aren't equiped enough to own, train, socilaise dogs that have these traits, same goes for many breeds.

I love ABs, good choice on a hybrid, i think they're more the norm nowadays. Have you seen the Painter or Margentina dogs? (not sure if there's many over here) I've seen some that even look amstaff like.. I just drove past an AB puppy today, absolutely gorgeous! -
Pups aren't inherently nasty little things. These people antagonise them and try to get them to fight each other from when they are only weeks old, poor puppies.
-
If the the QLD government determine the only safe dog is a purebred AKNC registered dog they wouldn't have solved any of the real issues. If someone wants a amstaff just look on here, they're fast becoming a very popular breed and all the "potentially irresponsible owners" have to do is buy a legal one. Big deal, it's not going to make them a better owner. The only sufferers are the dogs, and good owners like Jon.
-
I have to agree Lo Pan, though I also think that surely these kids must know better, some do and some just think it's the norm, much like many children in spain will see nothing wrong with bull fighting. I do hope it changes though!!
-
*edit spelling* Yet the HSUS are have put down thousands of pitbulls..? 64 dogs and 100 puppies from one breeder, 54 of another breeder.. the list is endless.
-
Yes ACT RSPCA is pitbull friendly! so they're doing something right! If it wasn' for Micheal Linke there'd be many more healty dogs being PTS because of BSL.
-
Owning 2 larger bull breed dogs we try hard to make sure the dogs play with other dogs in a controlled environment. This was especially important for our male as he's 18months now and we didn't want him becoming DA just because some random dog rushed him at a park. Lucky for us he's turned out great and is dog friendly, he even had a big ridgeback come and pee all over his lawn without any dramas ;) though he made up for that!! However they will run up to other dogs, they won't go near the dogs if they're on lead but if they're off they may have a sniff... So we do not let them off around strange dogs nor do we let them off where we may encounter other dogs... we've had the odd occasion where they've seen other dogs and it's been fine but it is not exceptable for them to do this.
-
I think we should judge each states RSPCA on their own merit, under the larger national umbrella they have opened themseleves up for criticism, especially as they're a law unto themselves & making it harder for other rescue orgs. ACT is probably one of the better operations, especially as they've been against BSL from the start, though i'm against mandatory desexing.
