And how many times have they said the truth? Not bloody often, they always embellish & sensationalise stories, quoting "unnamed sources", if you don't think the media lies, I have a bridge you can buy in Sydney.

Oh Huski, you were deprived of one of the joys of childhood! The world can be viewed in an entirely new light when you are 6 years old and sitting in a cul-de-sac with your friends - all manner of wonderful subjects can be thrashed out in such a plac-e, right thru to the meaning of life (thru the eyes of a 6 year old of course). You can keep a close eye on the street cricket the bigger kids are playing, or the basketball game being played in the streetside hoop, or wager whether it was Kylie or Brandon who was fastest on their bikes as they whizzed around the safety of the cul-de-sac, or just simply chat to the next door neighbour who is washing their car on the grass, telling them all about the new teacher at school or whatever. Life in a cul-de-sac isnt all bad for a 6 year old, and cul-de-sac gutters did have a reputation for being reasonably safe places for children, in communities where people get along. Souff I agree, my 2 kids were allowed to play on our front lawn, they walked up the road to their friends houses, rode bikes on the street, up and down for an hour sometimes, they played cowboys and indians - they did it all. Suppose I should be glad few dogs lived on the street and they never got bitten for being allowed to live on their own street. I don't care if the boy did look the dog in the face, I look at dogs walking towards me to read their body language. When it comes down to it this was a nasty bite made for little or no reason, and the dog should be PTS. Why do so many of you think the media is lying? Maybe it really did happen just like it says, the teenager walking the dog appears not to be arguing the point, and if you want to be picky, what does the comment "a boy at the house said the dog was ''fine, usually'' actually mean, usually does not mean always, it only means usually. Maybe because they have been caught out lying in the past & were never made to post a retraction about their lies.

People with pedigree dogs with papers, don't think you are safe from this scurge, OK your dog mightn't he taken off you like this one, but eventually they will make all medium to giant breeds be muzzled in public & never allowed off lead. BSL coming to your location, be afraid people & fight for our dogs lives.

When I was 8, I was walking with two friends, when a Lab ran out of it's yard & bit me on the bum, to this day I still can't work out why. Maybe I looked like a child who had done something to the dog, who knows. People remember, this is the media & they have an agenda & we all know what that is, so don't be quick to judge the Husky, the media will never let the truth out & I am sorry, but that dog will soon be crossing the Rainbow Bridge.

Meeting A Potentially "aggressive" Dog
mantis replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's what is really sad, when my dog was attacked 3 times, I couldn't complain or press charges, even though the last dog bit me & I had to go to hospital & get 21 stitches in my leg because of his breed, it would have been made out he was to blame. The ranger after the last attack when I got bitten said I should press charges, as the owner contacted him & tried to blame my dog for the attack & wanted him PTS, even though my dog was on lead & hers wasn't. -
Barkbusters aren't dog behaviourists though... Snap, was about to post the same thing. They aren't even qualified trainers. They are people who buy a franchise and have a couple of weeks training with the company before going out and "helping" clients "fix" their dogs. Well they should be sued for false advertising then, which is probably what I should have done, because this guy had no idea.
-
Barkbusters do, when I employed them to help Kenny after his 3 attacks to get over his fear aggression, the first thing he did was take me & Kenny to an off lead park with about 50 dogs running loose, I didn't even let Kenny out of the car as he was already stressing seeing dogs running up to my car. Bloody idiot & they wouldn't refund the $200 I paid them, because I wouldn't follow what the moron wanted me to do.

Meeting A Potentially "aggressive" Dog
mantis replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
After my dog was attacked 3 times by off lead dogs just walking around the streets, whenever I see a dog being walked off lead, I quickly turn around & head up to the nearest corner & just hope that the dog doesn't follow us, so far that has worked. -
Kenny is the same, always has been & he is a large dog, he loves to go outside & have a sniff around, to see what has been in his backyard while he has been inside, does his toilets & then straight back inside to snooze, he spends about 20 hours a day snozzing, lazy big bugger.
-
Wrong. Most people who have been in an attack would use that word. I would have. It's based on fear. But the OP used that word in describing any other dog they have come in contact with, not just the attacking dog in the OP, go back & read all their posts. By the way, my dog is affected by BSL, he has been attacked 3 times by off lead dogs, twice by the same breed who were bigger than him & once by a smaller dog, everytime he was attacked, all he did was knock them down & hold them, never once inflicting bites on the attackers, despite the attackers biting him, as soon as the owners came to get their dogs, my dog let them go. Want to guess what the owners of the attacking dogs said? My dog shouldn't be out in public, despite the fact he was on lead & doing nothing wrong, except protecting himself. OH & one of the larger dogs that attacked him, actually bit me while I was holding Kenny to make sure he didn't bite back, I ended up in hospital with 21 stitches in my leg, the moron owner went to the council the next day & reported me & my dog, after talking to me & assessing my dogs temperament, he asked me if I wanted to lay a complaint on the moron who owned the other dog, I said no because of his breed, I could see the media getting hold of it & my dog being made the villian. Deed not breed people.

As the owner of an almost 15 week old male Dobe puppy, I have to agree with the above about recall at this age. He still doesn't go more than a few feet away from us at the moment (we've only had him a bit over 2 weeks though) - but he has absolutely no recall whatsoever which means we cannot and do not take him anywhere offleash. But having only had female dobes before - the part about it taking 18 months for males is daunting!! lol It is a shame as we only live a few minutes from a great dog beach, but he is still a bit scared of other dogs at the moment so apart from the worry about him running off, I want to reduce the chance of having bad experiences with other dogs as much as possible as the last thing I want is a dog-aggressive dobie. His only close interaction with other dogs (on-leash) is at puppy school. As far as this incident with the "bully" type dog and BSL etc - I can only agree with the majority of others that there is no such thing as a bad breed - only bad owners. Any dog can be dog/people aggressive if it is not raised correctly - and to be honest, I have met far more small dogs with bad attitudes than the larger breeds as they are often less trained than the big dogs (This is not aimed at small dog owners on DOL, as you wouldn't be on here if you were irresponsible!). I was raised with Staffies, and my experience is that they are very loving, family-oriented dogs - so your comments about "staffy things" is very unfair to the breed and responsible owners. In fact your posts about any other dogs in general often refers to them as being "things" - You come across as not really liking any other dogs at all. I think the only "things" in all of these incidents are the owners - particularly the bogun ones who buy the rotties/gsd/dobie/bull terrier type dogs as they think they are tough, and give the rest of us a bad name. You really need to report this woman as soon as possible, especially as she has been reported twice before - this is not a one-off unexpected incident for her. I am very sorry that your dobie puppy was scared and hope that he doesn't suffer any long-term anxiety about it. As soon as his vaccinations are done - will you be taking him to puppy school? My little guy was a bit overwhelmed to start with, but then he ended up having a really good time and you could see his confidence improve - definitely worth going. I felt the same, I don't know any true dog lovers referring to any other dogs "as things", like the OP, this was another reason why my BS meter went off in believing the OP. Too many inconsistencies in all their posts.

I have always agreed with these sorts of points, and continue to do so. Where I live, there are many swf things that attack anything and everything. Today at lunch, we had to move because a woman had a labrador that was just too aggressive and she could not control him/her. The point I'm making is that none of those dogs scared me to this extent, because I always at least feel like I'm in with some kind of chance. Today, for the first time, I felt like I had absolutely no chance against a particular dog; you end up waiting for them to give up, and that's not something they do. It was too low, center of gravity protected it from counter-attacks by humans, too strong and too determined. I have been attacked by a boxer, by heaps of small dogs, and by 2 labradors, but in all of these cases, I did not feel as hopeless as I did with this dog today. I believe 100% that this behaviour was the result of poor ownership. But currently, there is nothing stopping terrible owners from buying these kinds of dogs. A doberman would be quite terrible in the wrong hands, but they just don't have the same build. My dog currently weighs about 10kg max. His dad weighs 40+kg, but I believe this dog today would destroy him in a fight - there just isn't any other breed that can really compete on the fighting scene. I have met many wonderful examples of bully breeds. One of my favourite dogs is a presumed pitt bull mix. But I do not think they should be available for general ownership. Because they are not even in the same league in terms of damage potential as most of the other breeds. If a crap dog owner decides to get a dog, if they raise it terribly, abuse it, don't socialise it, no training etc etc, there is still likely be a difference in the outcome if they had started with a pitt bull vs most of the other breeds. Don't get me wrong. If I could, I would change the laws and control who could own dogs. Too many dogs in shelters, too many being abused and too many completely avoidable dangerous situations. But I just don't think this will ever happen. And so, whilst I do not think it will be effective in eliminating all of the problems, I do now think there's a good chance that some BSL for these bully breeds would make it safer, purely because they are stronger and more tenacious than any other breed in general (of course there will be exceptions) - and in the wrong hands, this creates/enables a completely unacceptable situation. So many of the hard cases on the dog whisperer are with bully breeds because they don't give up, and they're stubborn, but I hadn't seen the dangerous side of that until today. Secondly, like I said before, I think these breeds are attracting the wrong sorts of owners. And people often say, oh well you ban one breed, they'd just buy another, but I'm not sure that's the case. They don't always want dogs, they want what a pittbull is portrayed to be, and this is what they create. Dobermans seem to be quite rare these days, I have seen only one other, and to be honest, I think this is how it should be. They are not suitable for all dog owners, and mine is a lot of work. This is how it should be with these bully breeds, but it's not. There is no such thing as an easy breed, but there are certainly breeds which are safer. A lot of this is speculation though, I don't deny it. I feel a lot calmer now, although unfortunately, when I put my puppy to bed, he cried for the first time in weeks, so I'm guessing he is still a bit shaken up. I'm just trying to act like nothing has changed and praying that tomorrow when I take him for his walks, he doesn't shy away from the other dogs. I'm not going to go and support BSL, but, if I'm honest, I'd probably say I'm based on the fence now. Must not say what I am thinking. :D

Don't deny it for a second - any breed can be aggressive. What worries me is that I could not move her dog, and neither could she. He was a tank; impervious to her hitting him. Cesar Milan calls them Gladiator dogs because they become immune to pain and don't give up. If properly trained, this makes them very useful and great with kids. If not, well, they're just unstoppable. He had no neck, nothing to grab to move the head away, no vulnerable part to aim for. I believe they surpass all other breeds in this respect. I am not saying I think there is no place for them, only that they are comparably more dangerous in the wrong hands. But you said your puppy has no serious injuries They also said they just picked the puppy up, if it was that strong & vicious, surely it wouldn't have let go of the puppy. Sorry, but I smell a rat.

Poll: Have You Ever Used The Report Button
mantis replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's the way I took it as well & I'm in my late 50's, so it's not an age thing. -
The risks pf surgery, the reason that Kenny's benign fatty lump on his chest will not be operated on, too much risk.

Poll: Have You Ever Used The Report Button
mantis replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am well aware the dog wasn't actually showing a traumatized face, I meant that is what it looked like and it (the dog's expression) is what makes the clip funny. I am also well aware that it was the war scenes that flashed up (to represent what was flashing through the dog's mind - no, not literally) is what people found offensive. All I am saying is that I didn't find it particularly offensive myself, certainly not offensive enough for the entire thread to be deleted but hey - each to their own. Totally agree, I can't believe that post was reported, gawd there are some sensitive souls on DOL. -
I've been told the same thing, Kenny will be 12 in 3 months, wonder when he is going to rip my throat out. ;) I used to take Kenny to Maccas up the road from me when I lived in Perth & tied him up just outside the door where I could see him, to buy him an ice cream cone as a treat in summer, I would feed him the ice creamoutiside the store which he delicately licked, until there was only the cone left & then he would wolf it down. The number of kids that would come to watch this huge dog licking an ice cream was amazing, the parents used to stand around laughing, but the minute I was asked what breed he was, they dragged their children away & abused me for having a vicious dog out in public.

The tests the RSPCA do on dogs is extensive. they are unrealistic, not a lot of dogs who have been locked up in their kennels pass the test.

When I was eight, I was walking with two friends, when a Lab ran out of it's yard & bit me on the bum, no provacation & still puzzled why it bit me & not one of my friends. Do I hate all Labs because of one psycho dog? No, there was obviously something wrong with it, or the owners were morons who didn't socialiseor train it.

That's just so wrong. It's also illegal. It's wrong to call the dog something it isn't. Wrong to the other breed/cross, and wrong to anyone who may take the dog on, be faced with the laws, NOI, tt, ba, etc when they thought they were getting a lab x. Just wrong, and lacking in sense, for a whole lot of reasons. And yes, I do differ, because I can see the looming problems someone else will face. No, it's not nice to see good dogs pts, but there is nothing we can do about it, that's the law, and passing the dog on - if it is a pitbull -only widens the problem. I've saved dogs, but not by doing anything illegal. Causes more problems than it solves. And, for the dog, it's wrong too. Somewhere along the line, someone is going to point the finger, and the dog is in trouble. Sending to rescue wont work, no rescue will rehome. It's illegal. You'll never beat these laws by doing anything illegal. And I'd have to wonder about a pet shop advertising and selling a pitbull in NSW. I suppose it could happen in one of the smaller shops, but I wonder if the owners dreamed the breed? I'm interested Jed- do you believe it is wrong to microchip chip a dog as a breed it is not only if it is being rehomed or it is wrong to microchip a dog as a breed it is not full stop? I ask as I know it not uncommon for pitbull and pitbull xs to be microchipped as amstaffs or amstaff xs I think Jed has made it pretty clear, that you never microchip a dog as another a breed if it's an APBT, don't know why you are asking, because Jed has been stedfast on this. maybe it wasnt clear to me, and that is why i was asking. and i havent read everything jed has ever posted on the subject Maybe you aren't able to comprehend plain english, the post you quoted, Jed clearly says it was wrong, yet you went on & asked the question. I feel you have an ulterior motive.

Kenny is exactly the same, he will fetch it once to humour me, but if I throw it again, he just looks where it landed & then look at me & strolls off in the opposite direction. He does love playing tug though, well not so much anymore, his hobby is snoozing these days.

That's the thing though, most people arguing about what dogs do when they suffer SA, are people with multiple dogs. When I bred Cairns never had a problem, but with Kenny it ws totally different. He was the only dog, plus we had a special bond since the day he was born. He was stillborn & the runt of the litter, I had to give him mouth to mouth to get him breathing, also had to hand raise him, as his siblings wouldn't let him feed from the mum. I was able to take him to work with me when he was young, but once he was no longer needing to be fed 4 meals a day & grew too big to lie around the office, I left him at home, that's when the destruction happened.

:D I have no anxiety at all leaving my dog when I go to work/ leave the house - same cannot be said for the dog. At some times (but not always) he will not sleep, not eat, chew things and 'panic' bark. Agree with you, I have owned many dogs & Kenny is the only one who has destroyed things when left alone.

HA HA, good thread. I voted 3, 4 & 5 in the first poll, the other polls I couldn't relate to. Yes I know, my dog is a spoiled big bugger.
