Pacers have been doing that for ages. Sorry, but the RSPCA are only interested in this to get more donations through the publicity.

My Doctor & therapist both wrote letters to the Office of Housing, when I was needing a home, saying that it was imperative, that they gave me a place where I could have a dog, to help with both my physical & mental health recovery. I can't believe anyone on this site, is disputing dogs are fantastic for aiding in peoples therapy. Nobody is. But don't let the facts get in the way of cluster brain freeze. Now I'm having trouble getting my head around someone needing a charity home would have the hide to demand it was imperative a dog was included in the deal?...good grief. There's untold amounts of people waiting untold amounts of years for "social" housing. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. More ridiculousness. I'm curious to know if you're always so joyless. Actually, no I'm not. I'm curious if the gang here ever replies to opinions contrary to theirs with anything other than childish sarcasm. Acually, no I'm not. I just hope that when you get older, you don't suddenly find yourself with an incurable medical condition, that ends your ability to work & totally turns your world upside down. I'm guessing you think that instead of needing a dog to love & help me cope with the sudden lifestyle change, I should have topped myself, (which is something I considered, after losing my heart dog during that time), just so I didn't take up "charity housing".

Does it live under a bridge.

After my Kenny passed away, I only wanted a rescue dog that was more mature. Me being older, I couldn't be bothered going through all the puppy & teenage stages. Now I have my beautiful older lady Cougar & she is a delight. Fits my lifestyle perfectly.

You're saying that like it'd be a bad thing.

Dogs are always happy with whatever you give them, unlike family & friends, If only humans could be more like dogs. -
Rescue Dogs - Clues To Their Lives Before You.

Dont mean to single you out Mantis but this is precisely what I was talking about. There are definitely other, more likely reasons for this. Angus could have lived in a lovely home and developed EXACTLY the same behaviours. Angus was either a fear biter or extremely intolerant of such behaviour. Confronted with situations in which he felt threatened, and if forced to take action himself to remove the threat, he bit. Ot alternately, he was an intolerant little shit who used his teeth to end behaviours he didn't like. Mantis, EVERY one of my small dogs dislikes being patted on the head by strangers. One of them is frightened of small kids and would, if put in the situation, snap at them. They have never been abused. It's just how they are. Frankly, those more familiar with tiny dogs probably wouldn't have reached the same conclusions about abuse because the behaviour isn't uncommon. And again, it doesn't matter how Angus got that way, surely the solution was the same? No problems Whippet. Angus was surrendered when he was 2yo, by a young couple with 3 small children, so I think it was a fair assumption by my friend. His problems didn't bother her, she still totally loved him, just took precautions so he didn't bite anyone. He was a real sweety, who I loved looking after, when she went away, or was in hospital. -
Pet Dogs More Friendly Than Frightening When Put To The Test

So do I. I said that he has been obedience trained and is well socialised which he has been. He is a very lovely dog with every as long as we are home, otherwise he barks, he's never bitten but he may if some crazy person tried to attack his home. He loves chasing birds and isn't a big barker for an LGD. In the last 4-5 months he's become a bit more serious but he's still a clown, he used to love going for walks through town and meeting everyone and loved the vet, but with all the stray dogs I've put a hold on walks. At the end of the day he's an LGD and will bark and guard as it's in his nature to do so and I won't take his breeding for granted. Tell me if I've missed anything out. Poor MUP, did you reject Clyde at some stage? Is acting a bit like a lover scorned. -
The breeder did a good job selecting breeding pairs with sound nerve. Storm phobias and fearful behaviour like this is genetic........such a shame to see so many dogs suffer at the hands of breeders who dismiss phobia as a genetic flaw. She also played the pups one of those "sound" CD's...so I think they were all pretty much desentisized to all sorts of loud & disturbing noises I believe genetics is the major problem. I have never owned or bred a storm phobic dog and I don't play noise tapes to them. I just will not breed from anything that is noise phobic before the age of at least 10. Some old dogs do seem to react differently as they age and I think this could be due to hearing loss making the noise sound different. Truly storm phobic dogs react to the drop in atmospheric pressure, long before the storm hits. Some neighbours we had years ago, had a 20 year old cattle dog who spent a lot of time on our front verandah. We never let her in our house but the previous home owners did. She was happy to stay on the verandah unless there was a storm coming when she would dart in the door as soon as it was open and scoot under the bed in the master bedroom. This could be 2 hours before the storm hit and she was always right in predicting a storm. Before 10, I never bred from my dogs after they were ten.

Yes dropping glass items is a scary thing. Once I dropped a glass & quickly took Kenny out of the room, so I could vacuum it up. The next day he was running around, shaking his head pretending he was destroying something, so I went & got him a treat to get it off him, I was shocked it was a big piece of glass, fortunately he didn't chew it, so there was no damage. He was a bugger of a dog, but I loved him so much & still miss him, but I love my Cougar as well now & I'm sure Kenny is happy I have her to love. -

Totally disagree. My 83 year old friend who passed away earlier this year, had a rescue Pom X, who was the sweetest dog, except he hated people he didn't know & trust trying to pat his head, he would snap & if they weren't quick enough the person got bitten. He also hated children touching him, she had to keep him away from children, or muzzle him when she walked him, in case some child ran up to pat this cute dog. This lady was an experienced dog owner, who used to breed & show Great Danes, until she became to old to cope with it. It's obvious poor Angus had been hit on the head by adults & treated badly by kids. -

I only drink beer, but when my Kenny was alive, I dropped a can of beer on the floor & it split open, spilling beer everywhere, Kenny was onto to it in a flash. Lucky he was a large dog, so he wasn't over the limit. -
When I went to the fridge tonight to get Cougar's dinner, I accidentally knocked half a can of pitted black cherries on the floor. While I ran for the mop to clean up the mess, Cougar decided she could do it quicker, after first eating the cherries, she then cleaned the floor & cupboards that had been splattered. She did a better job than a mop could do.

Pet Dogs More Friendly Than Frightening When Put To The Test

I'm guessing you don't have a Bull Breed, they are hopeless as guard dogs, because they see every human as someone who will be their friend. Unless they are owned by idiots of course, who treat them badly & train them to be aggressive. The exception being that they think their owner is at risk, they will defend them without hesitation. I'm happy that a dog will only react if I'm being threatened, but if someone is stealing stuff when I'm not home, I'd rather the dog let them, so they don't get hurt. -
As I posted earlier, dogs can smell when a storm is coming, I can't remember what the smell is, maybe someone else knows. But Kenny knew well in advance of the thunder & lightning hitting.

Exactly, she should be in jail, not fined & allowed to own a dog.
-
Kenny was hopeless during storms, I bought the tape & he never reacted to it, I think it's because there is a smell associated with thunderstorms. He was hopeless, used to put his head under my arm pit, like he was trying to block out the scary noise. One day while I was at work, we had a really bad storm that blew my side fence down, luckily my neighbour was home & when he heard Kenny barking at his door to be let in, he just took him home & closed the back door, so he couldn't get out again. Luckily my new rescue dog Cougar, doesn't even lift her head up off the couch.

You don't have to encourage them, a dog will naturally protect their owner, when in a vulnerable state. As the example I gave in my earlier post.
