  1. Since this news story is still being shredded can I throw in a simple question for everyone? Is there anyone here who CAN truly look back upon their life & NOT recount even one time that they could have handled a situation differently?? In all honesty, I doubt it - in hindsight its easy to see the changes needed Everyone has 20/20 hindsight but in an emergency or when panic stricken people rarely have time to analyse let alone contemplate the pros n cons of their actions they just do what their instinct tells them to do there and then..especially when a loved one is under major threat. Now, remembering this panic stricken person was merely a 13yr old boy whos beloved family dog was being mauled before his very eyes.. I imagine perhaps he too 'in hindsight' has easily contemplated the changes needed to have handled the situation & somehow successfully managed to save his dog.. “
  2. I personally would keep them on the same formula as constant changes in diet will also upset their tummies and perhaps worsen the situation.. keep an eye on the colour of their urine, its another way to tell if they're dehydrated as well, if they are it will be yellow if not it should be clear. Sometimes over feeding them can also give them problems such as diarrhea and lethargy but I'm thinking maybe Coccidiosis? Alot of times vets won't check automatically for this so you may need to ask! Health tip- In the past when we have had sick lethargic pups we boil up some liver in a saucepan using only enough water to just cover the liver and when cooked drain the juice, and when cool give 2 or 3 drops each to the pups via a dropper directly into the mouth- it gives them a burst of much needed nutrition and helps pick them up.. Good luck!
  3. I just rehomed a foster dog to a family who's 3 yr old son was quite recently attacked & bitten on the face by a local Pitbull X, they owned 2 gorgeous GS's but sadly had to rehome them due to their sons fear of large dogs now..she is apparently still battling with her Council Rangers as she has seen the dog since wandering again, called them but they said they were too busy at the time to go pick the dog up.. I think this boy in the news was extremely brave for a 13yr old and I imagine his friend was probably too terrified to think let alone move. As for making a phone call during the attack, in hindsight that may sound good but during such a horrible, devastating event for such a young boy to experience, I really doubt that it even entered his mind, he was just doing his best to save his dog & in my opinion I think he made a bloody good effort! Considering how long it tends to take Police to turn up anyway I doubt it would have made a difference sadly for Cougar..
  4. I'd be thinking no as we have a quota of about 15 to do each year but if you contact the officials you could probably be reinstated, they may just ask you to do a few supervised at first I'd imagine...
  5. Intelligence, Strength & Stamina... what more could you ask for in a dog?? :D GO THE WORKERS!!!!!!
  6. Wow I swim my BCs out there regularly and have never had that problem not that I had ever heard of it either, so don't disregard the lake, its a great place for the dogs, mine love it!!!
  7. Huski don't take it the wrong way I was simply using your statement as an example of how interaction & play with 'strange' dogs is how dogs are socialised in the first place - until you meet them they are a stranger and this is why I feel play is important to a dogs life..
  8. How do you manage to do any of these things without allowing them to play with strange dogs initially?? You can't, so therefore here are your reasons for allowing play with strange dogs and as its been pointed out no one referred to uncontrolled play or dog park play just 'strange dogs'
  9. But considering the question was 'Why do you want your dog to play with other dogs they don't know and what is the benefit in it? ' I'm still confused on the connection... Again like kids if the friend they have made & are playing with at the local park exhibits bad behaviour then you remove them from the situation so as to protect them but if all is well and they are all enjoying the interaction how can that be inappropriate or inconvenient to you??
  10. Yeah but they are examples of bad behaviour and I dont see how playing with your own kind is in the same category? Whether you are human or canine there has to be rules, boundaries & limitations to your actions...
  11. Well firstly I totally agree >What a great topic!! But overall I have to agree most with Smoothie girl... and yes thats as an owner of 4 BC's who also share their home with our cattle x mini bull & our Greyhound Polly + currently 5 foster dogs... (Greyhound, 2 x Kelpie pups & 2 Spitz girls) I do not show or do sports with my dogs nor do I regularly visit dog parks though all my BC's can be off-leash and will immediately do a u-turn as soon as they hear me coo-ee... My big boy Scooby is my man and its all about Mum (me) yet he has had over 250 rescues go thru his yard, to play with, to sleep with, to eat with as has my big BC girl Jess. I could not imagine never letting any of them enjoy the company of outside dogs, to me that would be like having my kids schooled at home and never playing with even the neighbours child - how could you expect them to ever know how to interact when they did get the opportunity... My question is did you ever consider it took you so long to get him to focus only on you due to him simply being 'curious' about the other dogs since he's never allowed near them? I imagine a home schooled childs curiosity would interupt their concentration too if they could hear the neighbours kids over the fence playing and yelling..the fact you may have finally succeeded your goal with him I feel would simply be out of his desire to please you as is in all BC's.. When my dogs run and play they constantly look over their shoulder to see if their needed to be somewhere else yet with me and if they receive no call they continue to play happily - when I do call its like yelling out 'Time to come in, teas up!' to the kids and to me they run.. Jess my big girl is the most disinterested I guess in other dogs- once she meets & greets she may choose to play, she may not, it totally depends on how good the game is the other dog wants to play cause she's been around that many her curiosity is almost zero after 5 minutes so she'll just come plomp down next to me and watch them all whilst enjoying a cuddle.. So my reply to why is.... because its natural!!
  12. I agree, what a heap of crap, why can't they just admit they need his advice and thats why they're really going to the show!! :D
  13. If they're allowed over the border please let me know as there are quite a few of us down here!!
  14. I totally agree, you need to have a vet check him right over.... do you have any other dogs or have you had any major changes in the household pushing him down in rank?
  15. I got this nice bite mark from my own BC girl..... unintended for me of course, it was directed at an out of control Cattle x Staffy girl (big girl) I fostered here years ago that my Jess seen as a threate to me so headed in to straighten her out but to avoid a fight I threw my leg in the way... The things you do...
  16. Considering he was on a comedy news show and they are only wanting to mock the news I think he did a pretty good effort to get the message through...

  18. [ Sadly, I think there are a lot of sick people who love blood 'sport', and the abused dog shots in the posted clip are real causualties of dog fighting and the abusive owner crowd that are drawn to super-charged dogs. Sadly, also, the power of such a dog, if not properly managed, could easily end out with a SWF . . . or for that matter, a fight niave SBT or Retriever, being torn to shreds in an off-lead dog park. I'm not a genius with matters of law, and can't say how it should best be done, but one part of me says that extr-powerful dogs -- like high power weapons -- need special consideration. Would be best if that consideration were directed to protecting the dog's welfare. . . . and more policing powere were directed toward catching, and locking up, dog fighters. I am the VERY proud owner of 4 BC's, a Cattle x Mini Bull & a retired Greyhound girl... Sadly there are alot of people who enjoy dog racing as a sport so constantly there are thousands of Greyhounds made casualties due to the sport whether by injury or lack of wins & money made on them.. The power of these dogs if not properly managed can VERY easily end out with a SWF or ANY fight naive dog (if in vaccinity at dinner time!) also! A Greyhound is also an extra powerful dog and considering it can cover on average 15m per second it could also be seen as a high power weapon BUT if a greyhound turns up in the pound we as Rescuers ARE allowed to release them at least and make attempts to socialise them better.. Anything chipped as even APT X or Am Staff X we are expected without even the simplest temp assessment done, to think of them as irrepairable - walk past those big brown begging eyes, ignore the affection they are throwing at us and pleading us to notice ... just because of their breed!! Yes the video does hit home hard but thats what it needs to do to make MORE PEOPLE AWARE of the TRUTH! Reality shows are all over the TV nowdays, thats what the public say they want to watch so I say give it to them!! Instead of the fake crap shows full of prettied up, 'want to be strippers' like Big Bros show them the hard cold facts of what horror is really going on in this world!!!!! HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Cesar Milan is my hero, I totally believe in his techniques and even as an amateur attempting them without his personal instruction have succeeded more in Rescue then I could have imagined with many problem dogs right down to a severely human aggressive dog... when you run a pack of dogs (I have 7 of my own + fosters) it does come down to the energy that you project as well as ensuring you are seen as top dog. Over time many ideas have evolved regarding dog psychology and continually they change, to me there should be no variation - dogs are instinctual, instinct is natures way! I believe strongly in 'Ban the deed, not the breed' so to see a pitbull so-o balanced should prove to the world that it is all up to the owner to how their temperament will develop.. 'Who's your Daddy?' mine is my Scooby Doo and I know that one day I will probably need to make such a decision and I hope when that day comes I can be as strong as Cesar to make the right one at the right time...that is true love & respect! If it should be, that I grow weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep,.. Then you must do what must be done For this, the last battle can't be won. You will be sad, I understand. Don't let your grief then stay your hand, For this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship stand the test. Take me where my needs they'll tend, Stay with me to the end, And hold me firm and speak to me, Until my eyes close peacefully I know in time you will see It is a kindness you do to me Although my tail its last has waved From pain and suffering I've been saved -Author Unknown RIP Daddy XXX
  20. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MESSAGE THIS SENDS!!!!!! I have facebooked it - have you?????? Help spread the word!!!
  21. QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I am the proud owner of 4 BC's and am a devoted BC Rescuer! 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? England, Scotland & Wales for herding 3. How common is it in Australia? Common and unfortunately too common in the backyards of inexperienced BC owners. 4. What is the average lifespan? 14 yrs on average, my 1st lived till 15 and a half years old. 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Loyal, extremely intelligent and sensitive to their owners state of mind. They are fun loving. energetic, easily bored in the wrong environment, protective of their family if suspicious of their surrounds. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? BC's do have a a great level of stamina so don't tire easily but they require more mental stimulation then physical stimulation. Once a routine is developed between a BC and its family the BC will remain happy & contant as long as regular walks & exercise is included... 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes I do think so but only an intelligent dog owner who has the time regularly to devote to their exercise & grooming requirements. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? They can but due to their loving sociable nature would prefer not to naturally... though they will cope as long as their owner dedicates time to them each day.. 9. How much grooming is required? Ideally they need to be brushed once a week or as close to that as possible - this makes it easier for the owner to handle their coat shedding come winter. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? This depends on the individual dog I think as some BC's are more highly strung whilst others are naturally perfect companion pets. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? CL (Ceroid Lipofuscinosis), TNS (Trapped Neutrophil Syndrrome) and CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly) also hip dysplasia are the ones I am aware of. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) * Ask to meet the dogs parents? * Are the puppies' parents "certified"? * What is the family history? * How have they socialized the pups? * What vaccines has the puppy had? * Have the puppies been wormed? * What is the breeder currently feeding the puppy? * Have any of the puppies in the litter been sick? * What visits has the puppies had with the veterinarian? * Is there a Health certificate for the pup? * Does the breeder belong to a breed club? * If I buy a puppy from you and have problems with it, can I call you?
