  1. Ok Xena is 10weeks old now. We have a month til her first show. She walks great beside us and heels with one problem...She cant stand the leash. SHe walks great without the leash. As soon as its on its all out puppy breaks...all 4 paws down....sits on her bum and will have none of it. Any tips on getting her used to it??? She does have a damn good food drive so that can help but I need tips on how to get her started. We cant do any puppy classes/show classes for another 3 weeks since her last vaccination is at 13 weeks.
  2. bitter apple spray seems to do wonders... works on the dogs and the ferret...ferret would just chew through all the other sprays followed by my finger.
  3. I swear by Bitter apple (anti bite spray) tastes real bitter and yuk works great on dogs/cats/ferrets you can get some from pet stores
  4. to stop chewing/biting I go for bitter apple spray You can use quit itch/betadine to disinfect any really bad areas, also I use it to clean my ferrets nails when she scratches alot, seems to have helped with any bacteria gettin off her feet to her neck. ALso if any rashes or really bad itching we use phenergan. Taz has grass allergies, Humphrey has wheat allergies and hayfever, and Xena had grass allergy on her belly for a week or so because her skin wasnt thick enough to deal with the grass. Used 1ml phenergan liquid on the pup, the other 2 get either a 10mg phenergan tablet or 5ml of the elixir and all gets better withing a few days. Only use the antihistamines when necessary though, if the rashes are really bad then once a day for 3-4 days.
  5. I'd give him a bit less rice and the full chicken thigh. We usually go by the rule that if its not eaten in 15minutes it goes in the fridge til next meal.
  6. My dogs have been known to vomit after drinking too much water too quick. Thats why you make sure there's water there but not too much at once. They drink it you fill it up. Slows them down a bit. It could just be a stomach bug, anyways take him to your vet for a check up to make sure everything is ok
  7. bloat has more to do with the dogs gulping down food water and hereditary stuff, also if they get lots of exercise after food then the actual food itself
  8. lucky you have a smaller sized dog... Humphrey always gets the yeast ear infections...it takes 2 of us to hold him down to give the antibiotic drops when it gets real bad. These days we limited his grain and cereal dietary intake as it can make his ears worse...also use cotton bud with methylated spirits to clean his ears, works great and evaporates quickly. It also helps to dry the ear out which helps stop the yeast from growing as it needs a damp environment. Here's a tip, when you clean the ears if they are either light browny in colour or yellowish and they smell really sickly sweet it usually means yeast. In this case cut out grains and cereals from her diet. Also if its severe get antibiotics. If you give her oral antibiotics good idea to either give her an accidophilus supplement or some natural yoghurt to restore the good gut bacteria.
  9. just be careful with the water...too much too quick and it could make him throw up! better of with small doses often. So put a few cm's of water in his water bowl and top it up often, instead of one big lot. Poor pup, sounds like you got some good vet advice though. Only way to clear a tummy bug is to let the body flash it out by itself...extra food can make the tummy/bowel more irritated and the problem worse.
  10. We get our mince from petbarn. big 10kg bags. Its fresh not frozen, so great for when we take it home to put it in take away containers. Definately wouldnt trust the pet mince from supermarkets
  11. bland food you can cook up small amount of rice/veggies with chicken As for vet recommandation. Its good to start off with what the dog is used to. For the first few weeks feed them what they are fed by the breeder. Then graually move onto what you want to feed them. Breeders recommandations arent always whats best for the dog
  12. blood wouldnt be from the meat. The gastric juices would break it down basically "cook it" If you are really concerned I'd go to the vet
  13. Some great advice for you on here. We've had Xena home for 2 weeks now. It took a week for Humphrey to realise that he was playing too rough etc. Xena would growl at him etc. He'd back off and then she'd play attack him!!! Its so cute now because they take it in turns at who's top dog. Humphrey would attack first. 5 minutes later he suddenly drops on the floor on his back and Xena jumps all over him...going for the neck and ears and muzzle. 5minutes later its back to the beginning lol I'm sure they'll sort it out Marcos
  14. Humphrey used to do that as a puppy...he grew out of it basically you need to focus their attention on something else, to ease the initial overload.
  15. sounds like our place with Humphreys chin. It always bleeds so Xena gets covered in dirt, saliva and blood...they love it though. Anyways have you tried using anything on the paw to stop the bleeding??? or help it heal quicker???
  16. According to some for our breed they should be fully grown by 2 years old. Almost 3 years later and Humphrey is still growing!!! ANyways as told by our vet usually its size/breed dependant. Small dogs mature by about 1. Medium/large get their height and length in first year and in the second yr they fill in. Large breeds can take up to 3 years to be fully grown.
  17. sounds like playing to me. Our 2 1/2 yr old boy play fights with our 10 weeks old pup...sounds nasty at times but they are so happy together What's their body language like when they're together?
  18. sounds like something my gang would do... Eat/drink too much too quick and they bring it up again
  19. Veanna, dont worry about the vet. If the dog looks healthy and happy then stick with it!!! Alot of the vets have deals with dog food companies and some will take every opportunity to sell you that brand. Our Humphrey has been fed BARF all his life. We always get great comments about him from our vet. Only time he suggested commercial food was when we were worried Humphrey was too skinny. So the vet recommended the Eukanuba dry food. To help supplement the BARF. A good vet will look at your dog and the dogs health and if that is all good they'll say to continue with what you are doing.
  20. the antibacterial drops would do the same job as antibiotics both kill the bacteria...the steroids tablets are to help heal the ear alot quicker When Humphrey gets his infections its usually caused by yeast. We have ear cleaner and antibiotics, then change his diet a bit to avoid grains. Clears it up in no time
  21. On the really bad areas i'd try quit itch, or some other iodine based stuff. Sometimes the scratching can make the rash worse since it breaks the skin and can add bacteria to the itchy spots, makes the rash infected and more irritated and red and hot. I'd stay away from steroid unless super severe. Try the antihistamines, takes a while to get the right one. Stick to a diet thats as natural and allergen free as possible. Ask your vet if things like calamine lotion or eczma cream are safe to use on your dog. It can help alot in areas where they cant lick it!!! You cant really get rid of the allergies but there are ways you can help ease them.

    Desexing

Once again it depends on the age and the individual dog Taz our mutt was from the RSPCA, he couldnt be done straight away so they gave us a desexing voucher type thingy. We came back a month later when he was just short of 6 months and had it done then.
