  1. We are enrolled in this course Jan next year with Alexis, hope we have as much success as you Do you know if this course is definitely based on the Leslie Nelson DVD? If so, I want to enrol! Any feedback on Scholars in Collars too? as I am moving up to the Hills early next year, and would like to get our pups' obedience skills back up to date you can pm me if you prefer Thanks
  2. Yes, but with cotton blankets that provide some vision to the outside area. Here's a picture of the culprit and the set up - on top of the crate is one of those cotton waffle weave blankets. When she is inside the crate the blanket is covering the front of the crate but the blanket is not opaque like a proper crate cover. You can see that the back of the gazebo has sides up so you can't see behind or to the side. For obvious reasons she's not barking here: I am thinking we need to get a very solid crate cover, and employ the strategy that Neats suggests. Sorry, nothing helpful to add but she is one gorgeous girl!! Good luck with the barking
  3. I think it takes alot of patience and persistance I introduced my boy to it over a few weeks VERY gradually (as he was a big sook when it comes to nails), and found that using a clicker helped enormously to get him to make positive associations with the Dremel....and now although he doesn't love it as such, he still sits there and waits for me to finish his nails just to get his treatie If you haven't seen this link before, it's well worth a look as it helped me when I first started out with the Dremel How to Dremel A Dog's Nails - Doberdawn Cheers and best of luck!
  4. Yep - broad sweeping generalisation I think I'm Chinese, we grew up in Malaysia, and my parents had a GSD X and other medium sized dogs...and we knew plenty of others who were dog savvy too. Depends entirely on the individual and their upbringing and experience, whether it be Asia, Africa or here in Australia! I've had plenty of caucasian Aussies shy away from my two hounds (who I wouldn't consider to be overly large dogs)....some people just haven't grown up with dogs around them, or are used to small breeds I guess.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll check them out
  6. For all you Adelaide Hills DOLers - we may be moving up to Nairne early next year, which means having to leave our current great Vets behind Can you recommend any vets in the Hills that are a cut above the rest? We have sighthounds, so it would be great to see a vet familiar with them too....any suggestions? Also do you know if there are any emergency/after hours vets in the hills at all? (just in case! ) Thanks a bunch
  7. At last year's Adelaide Royal, a woman and her daughter walking past turned their noses up at the benched salukis and said "Let's go and find the Spoodles" !!!

    Saluki

Do you mean you have seen pictures, or in real life? If you mean pictures, it could be that their ears have been cropped - which happens sometimes in the salukis' countries of origin i.e. middle east. My boy does hold his ears back when he is excited or feeling cuddly, so much so that I call him my "Dumbo" (as in the flying elephant :D ). A saluki's ears are more manoueverable than most people think! :p
  9. Just went and grabbed a bag, they are selling for $99 for a 17kg (not $90). But still a saving of about $19

    Saluki

Yup, mine yodels, sings and growel-wowels (is that a word? ) to get attention, to initiate play etc....and whinges and whines when he is upset. He does bark, but probably less than other breeds I've met. He gets lethargic in the heat (as any other dog would), but definitely loves to be warm in winter....in front of the fire blocking the heat from everyone else preferably As for living in suburbia, I think salukis are quite manageable if adequate exercise is provided everyday and a safe area to run and stretch out a few times a week. I would really prefer some acreage to let our hounds run though, and hopefully in the near-ish future we will find a place with some land....would definitely make the exercise management easier...and i would feel a little less guilty ps good luck with your new luki, redarachnid! I am very jealous make sure you post piccies in the sighthound thread too! Here's my little bugger

    Saluki

Generally speaking I think they are rough in play with other dogs....well my boy is anyway! His idea of fun is racing after other dogs, body slamming them, whilst roaring at them and covering them in slobber from his mouthing ....then he turns around and expects to be chased ! Obviously this body language/play behaviour is easily misunderstood by other non-sighthounds (or non salukis) and their owners, and can be quite intimidating. Not sure what other saluki owners' experiences have been with this? So yes to both the high speed running around whilst playing, and yes to the rough physical play in my own boy's case. Definitely very gentle with people though Not really sure about the jogging (as I have a fear of exercise ), but I would think they would adapt to your own pace whilst jogging, running as Nattylou has said.
  12. Not sure what suburb you are in but the Canine Behavioural School in Trinity Gardens is really good They are a positive reinforcement based pet dog training club. Here's the link Canine Behavioural School
  13. would make life simple if was that easy to get..at coles. thanks I think the Coprice Family Dog doesn't have Beef protein as an ingredient, and has Chicken/Chicken by Products (instead of Poultry). Can anyone post the entire ingredients list of the Coles Complete balance, and also the Nutritional info % tables? I might be tempted to try, as none of the stock feed shops has Coprice near us (usually involves a long drive to stock up on it ) Thanks!
  14. I'm in Adelaide. The thing is this club actually came really highly recommended, so i feel like maybe it's just me and that particular instructor was maybe just having a bad night? Hi Melbomb, not sure which suburb you are in but take a look at the following link for Canine Behavioural School in Trinity Gardens Positive reinforcement and reward based obedience training, which I've found effective for my two...and definitely no alpha rolls there! Canine Behavioural School cheers

  18. Although Indi hasn't been groomed at Goldies' The Spoilt Dog, he can vouch for the cuddles and treats he got when he used to visit for doggy daycare there! Another thumbs up for GoldiesRGr8Poodles2! :D
  19. Is it when he's moving his head in any particular direction? Just a shot in the dark, and not sure exactly your afghan's situation, but our first pharaoh yelped and whimpered when he bent his head down from a standing position, and was in obvious discomfort - turned out he had meningitis, and it affected his spinal, and neck movement etc. Hope your baby's ok and feels better soon
  20. Yep, I wouldn't be concerned either at this stage. Our boy was fine at home with us but the first week that we took him to puppy school, he was absolutely petrified! And I mean PETRIFIED! He spent the whole hour either running away from the others in fear, or was in a shivering mess in the corner desperately trying to pretend he was somewhere else! Week 2 he came out of his shell a little more, and would at least sniff the others (even if he was still a little apprehensive). But when week 3 came, he was a supercharged maniac and we couldn't stop him bowling the others over with his puppy energy So just give Gypsy a little more time and she'll be just fine
  21. Those pig in mud doors are great! Our Indi learned to use it after only a few days, and for the most part can get outside before he can't hold it anymore :D But yes, winter time indoor accidents happen in our house too! Last night it was bucketing down, and Indi was sitting half in and half out of the pet door just staring out at the rain, looking forlorn...and then he ran inside and happily weed on the rug!
  22. Yeah I think it's about 16 weeks onwards too....Ramses is almost finished (thank god!), he started at about 16 weeks and is now about 22 weeks. He must have swallowed most of em, because we only found one little one the otherday.......between the toes of a friend of ours who was sitting out the back (with Ramses playing around her feet! )
  23. I've just PMd you too, although this one's not in the western suburbs really. cheers!
