Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
Lab_Rat replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
yes rat - its what they use for bait that tells you what animals are targetted. For example, around here it's put in things like corn and oats. But all animals are at risk. For example, it is retained in the dying animals vomit, which many animals are likely to come into contact with in one way or another eg if its on the grass that a wallaby is eating. Whole thing just sux! Its an evil way to exterminate anything! The food chain makes it even more worriesome!! Rat -
Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
Lab_Rat replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Possibly spottychick, but I for the most part the targets here in WA are carnivores - fox, feral cat and wild dog. The only good thing is that from what I know roos and wallabies dont eat sausages (which is what the 1080 is put into). However there is evidence that Numbats eat decaying carcasses, dont know what their tolerance to 1080 is and they are quite endangered! I have also just read that DEC can bait within 5meters of boundary fences and 150 of dwellings!!! Great! Our house is very close to our boundary - where they can legally bait Rat -
Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
Lab_Rat replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
I couldnt agree more LMM!!! We live in an area surrounded by National Park, which is great - no hunting shooting (pffft, yeah right!).............. But the majority of the are is baited every so often. 1080 is a WA based plant, which is supposed to not affect the local wildlife That may possibly have some truth behind it, what about the rest of the continent where 1080 bush isnt indigenous???. I have to agree with everyone that has said it is an unnecessary and evil way to die - whethter you are a loved pet or a feral animal. I worry that a bird may pick up a non eaten bait, carry it and drop it over some poor buggars property and bingo! their dog eats it and dies - and doesnt even have to enter the bait zone to do so Im so glad your friends dog has recovered wilderblu, I hope they discover what is was and where it came from. Rat -
Hopefully youll have a wonderfully cool weekend in Albany! Enjoy yourselves, whoever goes :D Ill be thinking of you, while I work Rat

Shes fine this morning - although she will insist on wagging her tail for anything!! And of course on the most innapropriate things - door frames, egdes of cupboards, makes me cringe! Im trying not to talk to her, so she doesnt get tooooo excited and start wagging! C&N, the injury is about an inch from the tip of her tail, most awful spot to try and bandage . I discovered more blood this morning, smeared down the cupboard, more spots on the floor! I think she may have initially done it on the folded up crate sitting in the dining area! Will have to move that. Rat

Hi & Welcome SoozyQ............Its a small old world! My name is also Suzie!! And my last ridgeback was Miekah - different spelling I know, but essentially the same .......We had a burmese boy too, although he was chocolate and his name was Paddy! Harry the boxer is beautiful too! Big dufousy red grinning idiot dog gave itself a tail injury tonight! I walked inside home from work to be greeted by blood smeared from A to B . Little spots of blood all over the floor, and of course I ended up with blood whacked across my legs before I could do anything about it!!! Hmmm, a ridgy with a docked tail - how cool would that look??? Of course we'd have to get plastic surgery done on her "pig testicle" girly bits, very uggerly and definitely in need of covering or removal Rat

Almost as much fun as dragging looooong bits of grass or hair out of dogs bums!!! Rat

;) Sorry but an unattended picnic blanky, in a doggy area is just asking for trouble!! Rubystar - mine wouldve been just as 'well behaved' I do hope Ruby passed the gladwrap without problems. Rat

Thats him alright! Excellent dude! The few shows Ive seen of his have impressed the hell out of me, in the way he teaches people where their food comes from and how it gets there! Its great to see people who wouldnt have touched a dead animal to be able to cut it up and prepare it correctly! I would love to spend a few months at River Cottage. Back to the subject at hand - PETA. If they gave as much a shit about animals as they pretended to I may support them, until then, in my opinion, they can (in the words of Simon Pegg & Nick Frost) - JOG ON!!!!!!! Raz - I dont think Id like to see that ;) Rat

Dog Limit Laws Coming In Australia Wide. Update Info
Lab_Rat replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
Of course these new 'laws' will only apply to those who actually register their dogs with the council! And how many people have had their properties visited by very busy rangers to check how many dogs they have and whether they are all registered?? (This is just a theoretical question, not actually looking for an answer here guys!) Im sure that, as is the case in our shire, the rangers task of chasing up dog related issues is just one very small part of his job. After reading our local shires dog laws which were rewritten in 2000, and by the look of it reviewed 2008, the majority of dog owners in our local area are breaking the 'dog laws' in the way they 'keep' their dogs anyway! I could count on one hand the dogs that are confined as specified in said 'dog laws'..............As usual it comes down to people doing the right thing in the first place. Our laws state that in 'town' a limit of two dogs over the age of 3 months and their offspring and 'out of town' 4 dogs over the age of 3 months and their offspring. I was thinking about this thread last night as I was trying to get to sleep whilst our neighbours 20 gazillion bantam roosters crowed the night away ...And we live on 5 acre properties out here! Sure glad theyre two blocks away ;) Also glad they were only chooks and not his dogs barking! The confusing thing for me is that we live on five acres in what is classed on our rates as 'General Farming Pastoral' in '******* Town' Does this mean I can have three dogs????? Rat -
My Dogs Have Killed A Snake And Eaten The Head
Lab_Rat replied to Chocolate's topic in General Dog Discussion
:D Bloody Hell Chocolate! Other than the out of hours consult, those fees are ridiculously high!! I live in SW WA, and when my girl was bitten December 2008 I raced her in - at the time not knowing what the symptoms were actually caused by. I was in such a panic over her strange symptoms that I only figured it out on the hour long trip to my vet. The Consult was $60 Meds she had were Adrenaline $25 3500iu of Brown/Tiger Snake anti-venom $730 Histamil (whtever that was?) $14 The Blood Tests (anti clotting test to determine a positive for the snake bite) $25 IV Fluids $130 All up it was a little over $1000. This seemed very reasonable to me, even after the vet said "It could be quite expensive, probably around a K!" Is that all, I thought. That is NOT 'quite expensive' in my eyes!! I guess depending on how much anti-venom is needed is going to influence the price, but those numbers just seem so off the chart!! What on earth were the tests??? My girl made a full recovery, the vet and all the nurses were excellent, like they are ALL the time and I couldnt have asked for better care. Anyway Im glad your kids are ok! And that you didnt have to fork out for anti-venom! One thing I have found out recently about venomous snakes - adult ones anyway, they decide when to envenomate, and how much! Babies arent born (hatched) with the ability to do that, so they just get cranky and bite!! Seems to be quite a Snakey Summer!! Rat -
I dunno why I like the chocolate labs - probably the colour ;) I will def be up for Labrador cuddles, any doggy cuddles really!! Rat Man I shouldve started this dog collecting years ago - Too many breeds, not enough years left Re my dog book when I was a little girl (coupla pages back, it had stickers :p )- one of the other breeds that fascinated me was the Chessy! Dont know whether it was the name or the curly hair! Rat
-
Yep Wandys greeting is a wagging body and a curled tongue right up the nose ;) It makes your brain squirm ;) Tell Banjo Im not having three girl dogs - two bi-aches is quite enough!! And I want a nice fat headed, B&T boy, something with a nice boofy head :p Rat

Sounds like you need a Labrador ;) A chocolate one maybe ;) I would really need convincing tho!! I figure life is tooooooo short just to experience one breed too! Ever since I was a kid I have been obsessed with dog breeds. I remember a book I had with heaps of dog breed in it with stickers to stick near the appropriate breed. I carried it everywhere with me and could just about quote each breed and description word for word, think I wore the book out. Anyway all I wanted then was and English Springer Spaniel Things have changed a bit since then tho, dont think I live in the right place for a long haired huntin' dog! I still think they are beautiful tho! Rat
-
Kool :D ...... Seriously tho, thanks for that Perrys mum! Rat
-
Oh, that doesnt sound good!! Was that in WA?? I imagine in the wrong hands, and without proper socialisation Ridgies would be just as inclined to become antisocial horrors as any other breed! Dont get me wrong - I love the breed dearly, they are great dogs. They should not be aggressive in any way, but are a protective breed - I guess like most of the "big" breeds, Dobes, Rotties and GSDs. I would just like to have dogs that are more like our Kelpie - who welcomes everyone with a wag and a kiss, rather than treating everyone with suspicion . It does get quite tiresome :D ...Hell, I dont even know if I can be without a ridgy - just putting the research feelers out atm, like I said in previous posts, my girl is only a baby, so I wont be doggy shopping for quite a while yet!! I suppose theres also the in-bred variations in temperaments to think about as well, our current girl is way more suspicious than our last girl, and I believe boys are even less so than girls! Rat
-
Oh its ok Mirawee - the B&T Kelpie is still happening - although I think it will be a boy this time!! No Im seraching for my next Big breed...........Love the ridgies to death, but want something less protective ;) Just dont tell washa or rijbiz - they wont like that!! I will be there definately for the goldies, but I think Goldies and Dallys could clash then! We will just have to wait and see. Happy to introduce you to Lee anyways! You will just have to remind me of your real name, cause it could be embarrasing... Hey Lee - meet Labrat... I am hopeless for names, so I am soooo sorry I cant remember :D :D Im not good at names either - I can only remember yours and Mirawees!! Hehehe, Labrat is fine, but I prefer Suzie when introduced to strangers ;) Rat
