If my dog was sick or injured and needed surgery, there is no way I would be comfortable placing him in the hands of an unqualified student, no matter how broke I may be. As other people have said, it would be completely impractical to rely entirely on financially disadvantaged people bringing in their sick pets. How would you source enough animals for an entire class to work on in one prac? These animals are going to be pts anyway, and its not like the procedures being carried out on them are inhumane, they are normal surgical procedures, and the dogs are being euthanised before they even wake up so they are not going to be in any pain.

It really depends on the situation. Off-leash parks are not a free-for-all where owners don't have to control their dogs. But having said that, its hard to say who's dog was in the wrong if you weren't there.

When Darcy was a baby he went with me almost everywhere. The first time I put him in the car in his harness he absolutely screamed, he hated it, and did everything in his power to get out of his harness and into my lap :D If I didn't take him with me whenever I went out he would never have gotten used to it. He went with me to get petrol, he waited in the car while I ducked in to grab a couple of things at the shops, to go pick up pizzas for dinner etc. I never left him in the car during the day when it was hot or for long periods of time, he was always safe. And he now loves going for drives and will run out to the car and wait near the door when I tell him we're going for a drive ;) Nothing wrong with leaving dogs in cars in cooler weather. On a hot day, leaving the windows down does nothing anyway and from the sounds of it the OP's dogs were left in the car a lot longer than the other lady's so I don't see why they would feel the need to get angry about it...

My OH has grown up with dogs, his parents show and breed huskies and he has shown since he was a kid. So yes, he is very much a dog person. He has his own dog and she absolutely loves him to bits, I've never seen anything like it before. When we first started dating, she didn't like me much, wouldn't really let me pat her and was jealous when OH would cuddle me or anything ;) But now we are friends and she will give me cuddles and kisses.

WHy would you own a STORE thats sells animals if you didn't care about making money? I don't own the store but it was brought as an investment for a friend from their father. she is unable to change the name of the store either she looked into it. her cages are always clean, animals rotated and removed out the back , clean water etc. she makes more money from the sales of other items and there was a few months their where her cages were empty so yeah its not always about the money, your friend needs to consult a lawyer If she owns a PP store chances are its a Franchise so she wouldn't be able to change the name, with or without a lawyer. A petshop is a petshop. You can cover it in sugar and fluff all you like but it is what it is, an avenue for puppy-farmers and bybs to earn an income.

When Darcy was little he used to sit outside the shower while I was in there, with his nose pressed up against the glass, crying :D He didn't particularly like it once he was in there, but if I was in there and he wasn't, he wanted to come in anyway So that is how I bathed him until we moved, now we live with my parents so we wait for a hot day and he gets washed in the backyard under the hose. I'd rather put him in the bathtub but I can just see my mother having a heart attack if I did that

I don't understand what the issue is here. The OP clearly asked for advice and information. I didn't see anyone attack the OP for asking the question, all I saw is a few breeders and knowledgeable people give some advice and information. It was a very general question about breeding and lots of information has been given. Since when did it become a bad thing to suggest that someone become registered and do health testing before breeding their dogs?

Lots of people seem to assume that because border collies are 'smart', that they must come pre-trained with a whole repertoire of cute little tricks. Plenty of people have tried to get Darcy to "shake hands" and then ask what's wrong with him when he doesn't do it. Fact is, he is a stubborn little thing and it was hard enough to get him to pay attention long enough to learn sit, drop and stay. And we're still working on recall. "Shake hands" can wait. For the record I don't think he is particularly 'smart' anyway :p

why on earth do u assume only faulty pups are born of parents belonging to unethical breeders? ethical breeders do not have a magic radar that zero's in and prevents them purchasing any but the perfect genetic makup? it aint possible. there are thousands of deletrious genes yet to be dna markered. bad luck can happen to EVERYONE. n anyone YEP GIVE UP. YES. have it your way IF A FAULTY PUP IS BORN IT can only mean the breeder be struck from the responsible ethical ranks... would fix the problem faster. simply stike off every breeder who a defective pup came from. that would even eliminate the puppy farmers. remember the shitzu x maltese with luxating patella, heart murmer and think it was 3 hernia's, robert zammit showed on tv once. the world is not black and white bad things do happen to good people. bad things happening to them does not prove they are bad people, sometimes i find myself wondering if the mentality of the dark ages and burning, drowning and elimination of witches is just the same just new names believe it or not bad people ARE in the minority although to read this forum most could be excused for not realising that Wow. I think you need to calm down a bit. No one said that having one 'faulty' pup makes someone a bad person or a byb. I'm pretty sure the OP was just trying to make the point that not everyone with a prefix is a good breeder, which is a perfectly valid point. Sure, a good breeder can occasionally produce a 'bad' puppy. But a good breeder would do something about it, like refund a pup that has a health problem. There are plenty of breeders who consistently produce bad quality pups and don't care as long as they have the money in their pocket. That is what this thread is about. until it happens to you, you dont realise how the culture has changed. I highly doubt that "it" would ever happen to me because I am not a breeder and don't intend on becoming one I'm sorry that you had a bad experience. No one claimed that you are a bad breeder. I used to think all registered breeders were doing the right thing. Wasn't until I started doing research to buy my first pedigree dog that I discovered how many of them are just BYBers and puppy farmers with prefixes.

So sad, especially when it could have so easily been prevented

They just want people to believe that the places they get their puppies from are not like the places that have been on TV lately. And sadly, most people will see that sign and think "oh good, we can still go and look at the cute puppies at this shop without feeling guilty" because people will believe anything.

You're right, the majority of people have no idea. But, its not always that easy to educate them either. I've had the same discussion with my sister many times, she is always wanting to breed her mongrel dogs to some friend's dog or some guy down the road's dog, she had two 'litters' with a staffy she used to own before it was 18 months old (one on her first season, one on her second) and when I say 'litter' it was only one pup each time. She has no idea where either of the pups are now. The mother had terrible mange which was worse when she was pregnant, to the point that she had almost no hair at the end. The pups were both just as bad. And now she is talking about getting a pedigree staffy because she thinks she will make more money from it when she breeds it with her BIL's staffy cross And when I try to explain to her why she is doing the wrong thing, talk about health testing etc etc I get told I'm a "stupid paranoid idiot" for thinking that breeding should be left to the experts. Educating people is not that easy, especially when most people like to think they know better than everyone.

I don't really support the RSPCA either but it is impossible not to euthanise some healthy animals, there is simply not enough room for all of them. What we should be focusing on, is the puppy farmers, petshops and BYBs who are causing this problem in the first place.

If I knew who the breeder was I'd send them an email or something. I think most ethical breeders would want to know.

I used to just start walking back inside and say "Bye Darcy" as if I was going to leave him out there Worked every time.

Our old boy went under for desexing at 11 years old. Not as old as your boy but still pretty old. He had his teeth cleaned/scaled too. All his blood work and urine tests were good and he was fine, until he stsrted picking at his stitches He had to be a bucket head for a while but he was ok.

I never had to claim anything for illness, after they made it impossible to claim the first time I gave up. I have heard other people say they make it difficult to claim things, but it sounds like I might have just been unlucky.
