I feed this way to both my dog, and 12 week old puppy. You really need to feed this way to train using proper food drive IMO. It makes no difference what, or how much you feed, as long as each dog is getting what it needs nutritionally. I only work on one exercise per meal for the pup, or whatever new exercises for the older one. I don't chain any exercises together until I have built up focus to about 5 minutes .

Hope you enjoy your day ROM!

Sorry Tonymc, but I have not jumped to any conclusions or made any assumptions. I simply stated an unrelated fact that is clearly relevant to the thread. It was typed out in the hope that the morons who want an accessory, and not a dog, think twice. Besides that, the OP hasn't indicated what the dog will be used for. I am not a fan of people who feel they need to walk the streets with a protection dog. There are so many far more practicle solutions in most cases that do not involve dogs. Perhaps before any advice is given to the OP we really need to know more!

Bull Terriers are a huge deterrent to most people, just don't expect them to actually physically protect your property! A kirby salesman once came over to do a demo, and when I ducked out to the kitchen to make a coffee, I came back in to find him standing on the backrest of my couch.. back to the wall! Never had a bible basher on my doorstep for ten years! If they only knew what wooses they are! Why is it that they want a tough looking dog though?? In most cases self defence classes or penile extensions have more use in the long run for many people who request those traits in a dog!

Acceptable Aversives/corrections
dogdude replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Bridgy I think most successful trialling people will tell you that drive is the most desirable trait to have. Many people do not achieve it using aversive training for trialling, because it can compromise drive. Behaviour modification is a different kettle of fish. With all due respect to your club, .................... you were their standout performer at the last trial I attended!! Many of them have been around for years (some past mentors of my own). I think you are headed down the right path! -
Acceptable Aversives/corrections
dogdude replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Anita I think the question you really want to know, is what do people regard as an unethical physical correction. A correction with a check chain is not a reason to call the R.S.P.C.A either. I think any correction that doesn't do physical or mental damage to the dog is acceptable under the appropriate circumstances. For the record, I train using food drive for trialling purposes and learning new exercises etc..........but if I am on a walk and if my dog decides he want's to pull on the lead, I would have no problem with an aversive correction as he knows that the behavior is unacceptable. -
Rolling in poo Silvawillow??? Oh well.....each to their own I guess. I would rather sit at my pc  Seriously..........I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S: Ohh.....you meant the dogs SW

A Trainers Debate With The Rspca
dogdude replied to Rom's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I can't think of very many circumstances in life where extremist ideas are good. ..........That includes dog training!! -
The club Kallistar is referring to is just the Dogs Victoria affilliated obedience club. Not the sportsdog club unfortunately. They are contacted by email too Arya.

A Trainers Debate With The Rspca
dogdude replied to Rom's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
On the contrary......... " Many other people" don't have any input in regards to making laws and influencing government and local councils. I am not a fan of the way the R.S.P.C.A conducts itself. I do not agree however with some of what Mark said either. -
Nice way to top off the year! Well done!!

Way to go Sal & Ness................Roll on 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic results Ptolomy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You must have come close to a H.I.T with that Novice score. Congrats on your CCD title with another great score!!!!!

Sounds like a fantastic year for you Ness!

I wanna score 200! Know any judges that take bribes??? To keep Oscars focus and drive longer (just purchased the Leerburg dvd) To maybe debut the new puppy in Novice.

I take it you intend to trial? Get one made by a woodturner to your dogs measurements. Too big or too smaller dumbell can cause problems both in learning and also losing points due to mouthing etc in a trial. Make sure the shaft is not too thin, and also has plenty of ground clearance for when you strike long grass in a trial. Shaft length should be as wide as the dogs muzzle. One with a taper on the inside of the ends of the dumbell helps with vision.

Your local obedience club will sell them.

Yes, but we dont use it to train our dogs.............only our kids!

I couldn't understand that example either ROM, it has been discussed before on this forum about Prey drive more often than not will over ride most other drives depending on the dog. You have to work with what the dog offers with the most vigour from my understanding. Her example seems to highlight that drive really isn't floored (if you are using the right one in your training!) If she was using prey drive, there would be no need to chase the squirrel. If the dog in the example's food drive was what it lived for, again, the squirrel wouldn't matter (unless he prefers eating squirrels to what you are using for motivation)

Training Style For Potential Obedience/agi Dog
dogdude replied to BelgianPup's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi BelgianPup Food training can also be drive training. Dogs can have a more powerful food drive than they do prey drive, and visa versa. All dogs are different. There is a huge difference in rewarding/paying your dog with food, as opposed to training using food drive! If you really want to handle a top obedience dog, go to a trial and find a team that stands out like no other..........introduce yourself........and pick their brains. Many of the elite trialling teams dont train their dogs much at a club, because most of what goes on at clubs are detrimental to what they themselves are trying to acheive. Clubs are aimed at pet owners first, then some clubs go on to promote trialling in the higher classes, where you will then go about having to practically reteach everthing to have a top scoring trialling dog. If you want to be a fair dinkum trialler, find one to replicate, then branch out with your own ideas. You will get there much faster. IMO Drive is the key ingredient for dogs that score highly. There are many types of drive to choose from. Your dog will let you know, but as you are planning on "baking one", a pm to K9 would be a good starting point. ETA Vickie beat me to the mentoring point ("flick flack"..... two trainers agree on something) Slow typer im afraid -
Ok..........My last big mindless brag of the year!!!!!!!! New Pup!!!! "Brydee" comes from the same dam as Rexy's "Remy". She is also known as "Roxley Strutin Mistuff". We have trialling in mind, with my wife to handle her. It seems that after tagging along to a few trials she has been bitten by the bug! She is around 4 weeks old in the pic. She just turned 11 weeks today when we picked her up.

Well done Ness.........I take it you are in W.A?

Name????????? Very cute pup Jules! It seems as though my pup is a done deal too now! Only have breeders pics atm, so I will take some as soon as she lands on the door step. Mine is a slightly older pup too Jules, (just turned 11 weeks), so maybe we will have to make time for a puppy romp soon. I am getting her on breeders terms, and she is a half sister to a very prominent dol stafford. I am not sure about her shots at this stage, will have to find out.

Gee's everyone , it seems that Leopuppy has got us eating her dust once again Maybe we can convince ourselves that she is running scared?????? Well done on a fantastic weekend for you ;) Sounds like you had a great weekend too feralpup, reckon that dog of yours would make a super high drive obedience dog. Helens pup sounds like a star in the making too!!!!! Looks like I may be close to getting a new little sister for Oscar, keep you posted.

Hi FeralPup At first I had an inclination that it might be you, but I thought your dog seemed a little larger than what I could remember of your dog at the Gina seminar, and maybe your hair was different?? Anyway, I was facinated watching your dog mark the ball AFL style from the height it was coming down from! Super impressed while watching you warm up on your own equipment too, he was faster than lightning!!! I bailed after the obedience on both days to go down the beach, then the long trip home on Sunday, so missed most of the agility. I did see a very young kid do a run with a mini poodle before I left. I really don't know much about the finer rules of agility, but it looked like he done a clear run, and everybody cheered him after the run. Bet he felt on top of the world!!
