  1. MM, he does look pretty suave! Woofen i LOVE Abby, she is an awesome character! PM i always wanted to name a pet Puck, i was always afraid of people mishearing me when i called out their name though @ Oso
  2. So do your pets resemble thier namesake? That is, if they were named for something or someone? I was warned on my breed thread when i chose the name i did whilst waiting for my puppy and told a couple of horror stories Still i went ahead and chose Flute, innocent sounding at first, however Flute is the nickname of character that amused me in a David Eddings series. The character (for those that dont know) is the Child Goddess Aphrael, a thief, mouthy, cheeky and prone to dissapearing when things get hairy! Flute has turned out JUST like this character, will steal anything (latest was a bag of clothes, which luckily she decided didn't fit), she will give you the biggest mouth full of cheek if she gets told off and when she is big trouble she makes herself scarce. Luckily enough though she is just like this fictional character and EVERYONE loves her, its damn hard not to. I am beginning to think though that just like Aphrael, Flute will be a child forever My horses Loki, Pandora and Romeo are all just like their names, as is my cat Zulu. I think i made a wise choice with Sienna Anyone else that has named a pet something that they have grown to resemble or did from the start?

  5. This is what i received on the subject: Chinese dogs saved from cooking pot Posted 10 hours 41 minutes ago Hundreds of dogs being trucked to Chinese restaurants were spared after about 200 animal lovers mobilised to stop them ending up on dinner tables, state-run media said. A truck crammed with the dogs was forced to stop on a highway in eastern Beijing by a motorist who swerved his car in front of the truck and then used his microblog to alert animal-rights activists, reports said. The dogs, many apparently stolen from their owners, were being transported from the central Chinese province of Henan to restaurants in Jilin province in the north-east, the China Daily said. It said 430 dogs were rescued, while the Global Times put the number at 520. Eventually, about 200 animal lovers and activists gathered around the truck in eastern Beijing and after a 15-hour standoff that jammed traffic the dogs were freed when an animal-protection group purchased them for 115,000 yuan ($16,600), the Global Times said. The interception of the dogs was the latest bold action by pet-lovers in China, where growing awareness of animal rights is colliding with centuries-old culinary practices. There have been regular reports in recent years of citizens attempting to block trucks carrying hundreds or even thousands of cats to meat markets in southern China, where cat meat is particularly popular. The China Daily quoted activists saying many of the dogs still had collars with bells and name tags, indicating they had been stolen from their owners. The consumption of dog and cat meat, both of which are believed to promote bodily warmth and are thus popular in winter, remains widespread in China despite a surge in popularity as pets. However, earlier press reports have said authorities were looking into drafting a law that could outlaw the practice. The reports on the dog rescue suggested the truck company was unlikely to face legal action as it had all the necessary permits to transport the animals. The healthy dogs were to be made available for adoption in one month while the sick ones, suffering from dehydration and infectious diseases, were sent to pet hospitals in Beijing. - AFP
  6. Oh how fabulous! I love stories like this, just fabulous. Thank you for sharing.
  7. Oh Yeah that was really cool that show, they rescued dogs from the pound and trained them as assistance dogs. There was also one called K-9 Boot camp about the military dogs.
  8. I live in a fairly isolated region, one where purebred dogs do not abound, i would be really interested to meet dogs on my "one day list" and speak to owners/trainers/breeders/enthusiasts in an informal setting. Id also enjoy speaking to people involved in various aspects of dog training and competition. That could be taken so out of context for a non dog person However as an owner of shorthaired breed grooming demonstrations on various breeds would really facinate me ;) Oh damn what a shame. Stripping is amazing and seeing what they can do to a dog is quite incredible. I get the impression you think I was having a dig. I was not, as indicated, I would be fascinated to see such a demonstration. My apologies if my misguided and immature sense of humour has once again led me astray and I blame the email I recently received in regards to things a horse person should not say in public and the parrallels i drew from that.

  11. Yes, however he is located in Bathurst not Sydney :D. We are using his sarcoid treatment on a horse at the moment. we have both drops and cream to give her twice daily. So far we have only been using it for a week and some of the smaller sarcoids have already dropped off and there is a massive difference. He also sent photos of a HUGE sarcoid on a horse that vanished almost completely. Robert has quite a number of staff that work for him and all are very knowledgeable and very friendly. I highly recommend him if you are looking for alternative treatments to anything.

  14. Correct - google Labradoodle creator regrets creating and youll get about 83,000 hits. This is from one Link "I don't regret the dog, not for the purpose I bred it for," Wally Conron tells Paw Nation, "I regret all the people who got on the bandwagon willy-nilly. People who are breeding poodle crosses for the money, who have no concern for parentage." How was Conron to know that by crossing one of his kennel's best Labs with a standard poodle, he would unwittingly spark an international trend that would spawn the schnoodle, the groodle, the roodle and countless other similar designer breeds? In 1988, service-dog trainer Conron received a letter from a woman in Hawaii who needed a seeing-eye dog that wouldn't shed, because her husband was highly allergic. At that time, no one had ever bred a Labrador retriever with an allergy-friendly standard poodle, at least not on purpose. So why is Conron so ashamed of his own creation? Like many others, he feels that the labradoodle trend started a gold rush for unscrupulous backyard breeders with no knowledge of proper dog breeding. "One of our litters had 10 pups in it and only three were actually allergy-free," says Conron. "Let's face it: they're a crossbreed. You never know what you're going to get. It's a bit like buying a pig in a poke, yet people all over are charging more for labradoodles than purebreds."
