Even tho we have fed some raw bones to our Cavs, and also fed them dental specific dry food they still have had teeth problems .. vets say it can be different types of mouth structures too that cause more problems in some breeds of dogs (no matter what you do..) We brush their teeth and remove some of the plague if its not too set in. We also use a oral spray called Petzlife but there are similar ones on the market (theres been threads on this subject) With our young Miah, we have been trying to get her to chew on more longer lasting bones and she's on a mostly raw diet.. will be interesting to see how her teeth go later on..

First Obedience Class - Wouldn't Stop Barking!
julesluvscavs replied to Puppynovice's topic in Puppy Chat
Hi puppy novice:) Im fortunate I don't have a very noisy puppy (well shes almost a year young now!) except when shes at the beach lol but she is very excitable! We have started a training course (a basic training one) with her and 4 other dogs of varying sizes and breeds. A couple of them are quite vocal. We always start our classes off with our dogs resting on these carpet mats the trainer supplies. The idea is to focus on calming our dogs down before we begin, well as much as they can be at the start of a class lol Its very much a reward based school, so lots of treats are handed out if the dog is acting appropriately.. We usually end the class with our dogs back on the mat being calm before we go. I think its working with the more vocal dogs, but its not happening overnight of course.. but the last couple of lessons the more vocal dogs have been slightly less vocal i have noticed :) Others with more experience will hopefully come in and give you some suggestions. Im not a novice to owning dogs, but I am with owning a puppy . Goodluck and happy training ! We had also done puppy kindy when she was much younger but apart from making excitement noises when she first met the other puppies, she was fairly quiet after :) -
LOL ! My little girl Miah loves chewing, well its more nibbling on our socks, but she really hasn't done much damage to any of them... yet. she has got sharp little teeth so im quite surprised ! Had to edit how i had written it wasn't coming out sounding too good lol

Clicker Too Loud

So I did hear right ! ;) -
It will be Sylvie.. thinking of you all x
-
Anne, my heart goes out to you also. Its been a tough painful year for some of us x
-
Thinking of you Syvie, its a tough thing to go through with them Joey had been a bit snappy (as in growly) at our young Cavalier and I first thought it was because she was getting in his face.. unbeknown to us he was getting ill , but we had no idea at the time.. He would often go put himself in his crate and rest there and stay away from Miah when she was in a playful mood.. When the quality of their life starts to suffer badly and you have done as much as you can, then all you can do is let them go.. Hopefully you not near that point yet x

Sorry to hear that Poodle wrangler our 9 year old Cavalier had to be pts recently due to a suspected brain tumour or around that area.. He couldn't even walk in the end. Its the saddest thing to watch He was on the highest dose of cortisone in the last 48 hours to see if that might have bought him some more time, but it didn't. He didn't have full on fits as such but he would be very jerky and spasm a lot especially at night.

Clicker Too Loud
julesluvscavs replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I started learning about clickers for the first time on the weekend, and the trainer was showing us a few different types. One of them you could adjust the sound volume on it. I cant quite remember but im sure she said something about putting some blue tack on the other types tp make them click softer , i might be wrong? And you know not to ever click them near your dogs ears? I just bought the basic one as it doesn't seem to loud for my young dog. BTW PW your puppy is very cute :) -
Renae is overweight because of health issues, I would hate it someone started on at me about her. Everyone that knows her (and her vet) knows the reasons, no one else needs to know, its none of their business. The only time i have said anything about overweight dogs is if they belonged to people I personally know and then I just don't blurt it out, its been part of a conversation and said nicely. (when and if its been appropriate timing).

i'll see f i can find any, might take me a while tho.. i think i came across them that time Joey couldn't walk properly and i was trying to see what i could use to help lift him because as you know i have a back back too..
-
Theres been threads recently about special types of mobility harness's, Im wondering if they would help you/Lacey Marg ?
-
good idea RP :) Im not always calm when im going into one especially if they have come on quickly, then i do get stressed out pretty badly im type 1.5
-
yep i agree with previous replies.. Ours will often also lick their paws quite a bit when they need doing ..
-
Hope you both enjoy the puppy course Ranger, :)
-
Miah does the opposite, if i start blowdrying my hair, she knows im going out, so she will sit on the toy box (at the end of our bed) next to my dressing table and sit there watching me intently ..either that or she wants me to do her hair and pretty her up as well
-
I was hoping Miah would be my diabetic hypo alert dog, but I think they need special training to be able to do that. So far none of my Cavs have given me any signs of an impending one (Luckily i get symptoms and test myself regularly). Altho having said that when I act on one and start eating a jelly bean etc, they will rush over then arghhh
-
Our 11 year old Cav is totally deaf, but she can smell from a long way away. I sometimes try to quietly sneak in a treat for young Miah in another room and lo and behold, it doesn't matter how heavy she was sleeping at the time and , Renae will always know, she will wake up and come to where ever we are

A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy
julesluvscavs replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Puppy Chat
They all looking soooo gorgeous Some lovely pics too of them all Congratulations to any new puppy owners in here Enjoy your broken sleep hehe Miah is going very well, (hardy little thing she is too) shes 10 months now, hard to believe! Shes started big school now and is training really well. Years ago when I was younger and fitter, I always wanted a dog that had her drive and focus, now i've potentially got one, I'm unable to go further with her later . Arhghhh always the way isn't it ! Im putting on a small 1st birthday party for her end of Nov (she will be 1 on the 27th Nov, same as my husband and my 9th wedding Anniversary) but we having her party on the following Sat with a few Cavaliers and their Humans (and one small mixed breed dog). The theme of her party is going be purple. I have already bought her a lilac party dress (if it fits still on the day!) Its a bit girly for her as shes more a skater chick type of dog lol but she will just have to wear it for one day, whether she likes it or not lol I always think shes still on the small side and hasn't grown that much but then when i look at my avatar, I know she has ! lol Heres some updates on her blog for any of you that might be interested:) http://julesluvscavs.blogspot.com.au/ -
I grew up with GSD's for years .My parents were registered breeders long time ago. My first dog when (after i left home) was a German Shepherd x .. A rescue. My parents always instilled in us to always get a dog from a registered breeder or a shelter. I had wanted to get a Cavalier since i was around 10 years old after having seen them at a royal show. I continued for most of my life just to get X Breeds from shelters. Ive owned Cavalier for many years now and despite them having some health issues (not necessarily being genetic) I will always be loyal to this breed now. I can't imagine not having one always in my life. I have thought that I might get another rescue dog one day if the situation arose but I wouldn't be fussed what breed/s it has in it provided it was smallish and suited our lifestyle . ;)

Miah used to really stir up our older ones, pull on their tails and ears, but we expected that from her being a puppy. I used to give the older ones some time out when she would get too rough and go on for too long. Our oldest one Renae had been a Mother twice so she was used to it, and would get rather authoritative with Miah if she went on too long. Miah would listen to her also. The other Cav (Hes now in doggy heaven) wouldn't be as patient and would snap (not bite) but Miah never took him seriously like she would with Renae (Once a Mother always a Mother lol) Maybe Joey had been starting to get sick then and thats why he was snappy at her from time to time, not always. Apart from giving them all time out from each other in the form of a crate/puppy pens - inside and outside/baby gates, I would also distract Miah with other things encouraging her to play with her toys.. I have Renae on some natural anxiety powder as shes been of poor health of late and gets quite anxious at times now.. Miah is 11 months now and is starting to settle heaps around Renae, however she now goes after one of our indoor cats to play with instead. Luckily that particular cat is very very patient and not aggressive.
