  1. Had the same problem the first few weeks. I just keep saying a firm "AH AH" (not too over the top) and he is much better now. He definitely knows what "AH AH" means.
  2. My samoyed pup is now 13 weeks old (where has the time gone!) and by-and-large he's an excellent little fellow (dug his first hole today, grrr) He won't eat unless I give an eye-contact command (similar to TOT) and has been toilet trained since week 1. He already 90% understands 'sit' and 'come'. One thing I notice is when I get home from work and/or early in the morning, he has massive bursts of energy and will literally run rings around me at full pace wanting to play. The problem is his idea of "play" is a bit mischeivious. He is constantly running in front of me under my feet and then will start running around me gesturing (with his mouth) that he wants to nip at my trousers (admittedly playfully). When he is really psyched up he will run around me at full-pace and come "in for the kill" with a playful jump at my blind spot as I crouch on the ground. I think its important a puppy expends his energy and enjoys his "puppyhood". But I am wary of doing this in the right and wrong way. Would it best I try and pacify this behaviour I should I play along and have a bit of fun?
  3. It puzzles me too lol. Stones have no taste, they can't be chewed and they're rough and coarse on their gums. What on earth are the little rascals thinking? Perhaps it's a sign they need something to chew on or (in my case) my 3 month old is about to start teething?
  4. He doesn't actually chew them, I'd say he "teethes" them. They are in his mouth and I'm afraid he will swallow one sooner or later. Is this norml for pups? I guess the up side is if he does swallow one he will probably never put one in his mouth again so its part of the learning process? Obviously Im a little concrened about him choking.
  5. Yep I'm starting to suspect it may be tiredness related.
  6. My samoyed puppy is well-fed, watered, played with frequently and exceptionally well-behaved (so far, knock-on-wood lol). He's being well socialised and has adapted well to his new home after one month. Normally when he wants to go outside, or come inside, he lets out a little whine. He also has a little "random" whine for reasons that escape me. Is this normal for puppies? Its frustrating because I cannot read why he is whining since he doesn't need to toilet or drink water or anything else I can see. He can be laying down or sitting and just whine for no apparent reason. Is this normal for 12 week old puppies or an indication of some problem?
  7. Had a similar issue and posted it in the other forum. The consensus of advice seems to be don't "lay down" or get down to their level as this presents opportunities for the dog to try and be dominant.
  8. Has he been training on a leash? Has he been socialised before now? Lots of people, car rides, puppy kindergarten etc. ?
  9. Ive had a bit of rough and tumble play (nothing too serious) with my puppy once or twice partly to let him know how far he can go with "play" and also I think pups love a bit of physical fun with their "master" every now and then. Im sure pups do this with each other in their litters and Ive noticed dogs love a bit of light wrestling with each other. I'm trying to expose him to the full gamut of human-dog interaction while maintaining the alpha role. I sometimes wonder if he isnt exposed to some grabbing/holding stuff now, will it somehow effect his development later as a full grown dog if an innocent kid grabs him affectionately/playfully and he doesn't know how to react? Anyway, I'm getting off-track in my own thread.
  10. Thanks. Only thing is a lot of pups when you push them away think you're playing and keep coming back for more biting
  11. Not a huge problem but my pup I've had for 10 days has sharp teeth and no matter how many times we clamp his muzzle shut (firmly but gently) and say "NO!" after he teethes/bites us, he still keeps on doing it. The message isn't getting through. I suspect he thinks we're being playful. I'm also grabbing the scruff of his neck and saying "NO!" (like the bitch would with the litter) but with no success. Should I change tactics to educate him not to bite (suggestions please) or stick with clamping the muzzle shut and hope over time the message will get through? Does teaching not to bite take days, weeks or months? Thanks in advance for any advice.
  12. I gave my puppy his first pigs ear yesterday and he loved it. The only thing is I hear they are prone to giving dogs runny poo so yes I'd regulate how often you give them to your pup.
  13. well based on my limited (but successful so far) experience carrying to the elimination area is best. That way you're in control more. I couldnt have got to where I am now with the distraction of a leash (plus back yard steps) for my puppy.
  14. Isn't it amazing how quickly they grow? Ive had my new samoyed for only a week and he's already growing. I hear they grow when they sleep. That probably explains all that twitching and jerking he does when he's lying on the ground...sometimes at night I swear I can hear his bones stretching in his crate ;)
  15. My little Samoyed has been JUMPING down 2-3 steps he's now so confident. The side of the 4 concrete steps leading up to my back yard are exposed so now I'll put something there so he can't jump down. I read the other day its not so much the steps themselves that are the problem, its just the dogs become over-confident and run up/down them too fast and then have an accident. When I saw my 9-week old puppy JUMP down 3 steps this morning I was horrified for this exact reason.
  16. doing very well here. He's even entering the crate of his own accord now and claimed it as his own lol. I've figured out one thing about his little whines; he gets thirsty. Is it bad to put a small plate of water in his crate? It would mean he's more comfortable and he'll still be going to the loo every 3 hours anyway. Any feedback appreciated.
  17. Took these shockers with my webcam. Will add decent ones later.
  18. I'm far from being an expert (had my puppy 2 days lol), but what Ive done so far and it seems to be working is whenever he teeths/bites me, even lightly, I instantnly grab his muzzle (lightly but firmly) and say an assertive NO. Ive done it about 20 times so far and he is using his teeth on me less and less. I've even tried to semi-bait him into using his teeth on me and he won't. Keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully this simple method will prevail long term.
  19. No camera yet sorry. First night crating went like a dream. He whined for all of 1 minute in the crate then went to sleep. I weed him at 4am, took him back to crate and he slept fine. He ate a bit more this morning...this guy is really placid. Ive never seen a Samoyed like him. He isnt eating much and loves his sleep :-)
  20. lol he's not keen on the crate...I put him in and pat him but he soons come straight out. Ive tried putting in toys/treats but no luck so far. I think I'll lock him in for a couple of minutes...let him whine...ignore, let him out, repeat for longer period and so on and so forth. Wish me luck ;-)
  21. Again thanks for replies. One qustion I forgot. Why do some people put a towel or blanket over the crate?
  22. Thanks thats precisely what I'm doing re crate size. Did you put toys in for the dog at night? So assuming you still go to bed around 11pm, how long is your puppy lasting now before you toilet him each morning?
  23. Ive been reading up on this and the theory goes a puppy can hold its bladder for its age in months + 1. Therefore, theoretically I have to wake up approximately every 3 hours throughout the night and take my pup out of its crate to 'wee wees'? My question is, if I keep doing this, won't the puppy begin to expect it to happen every few hours and get "trained" into a routine of regular overnight toilet breaks when I want the opposite to happen (less toilket breaks)? How long before he can hold for 4-6 hours and I can awake at a reasonable hour to toilet him?
