I was going to mention this before in your previous posts sandgrubber, but do you realise you can have dogs which present as 10/10 for 'bidability' which are extremely DA or would kill or main a person but still be extremely bidable? What makes you think that the dogs you describe above would make good working dogs?

Neighbour Gordon Shelton said that after he saw the dog being "jumped on" he waited until the owner went to work, retrieved the animal and called the RSPCA. So did they recreate the scene to get the photo?

If you do a search on Bennett and her speakers Tammie, Mia, Vanessa etc you will find most of the material and ethos that will be presented at the seminar. What makes people responsible owners you will see all goes back to the dogs temperament and suitability for modern life. What you will be presetned with at the seminar is a complete menu for the soccal engineering course they would like you to follow. Psychologist Pauline Bennett is leading a Monash University team in developing a diagnostic tool to match dog breed with owner. Dr Bennett said research showed that most people loved their dogs ''to bits'' but that was not always the case. ''People buy dogs on the basis of how cute they are as puppies and they don't think about the fact they are going to have to live with them for 15 years,'' she said. The university's Anthrozoology Research Group, made up of psychologists, veterinarians and zoologists with an interest in canines, has already developed a test. It assesses the financial cost and emotional and practical downsides of having a dog in the house. There are questions such as ''How often do you feel that looking after your dog is a chore?'' and ''How often do you tell your dog things you don't tell anyone else?'' The study of 1016 people, by Vanessa Rohlf, a PhD student in psychology, shows the more activities an owner and dog do together, the more responsible the owner is in caring for the pet. ''The more they interacted with their dog, the more likely they were to annually vaccinate their dog and the more likely they were going to groom it,'' Ms Rohlf said. ''A lot of councils tend to restrict areas that people can take their dogs to ... maybe councils should look at relaxing bylaws.'' Sydney's Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, is promoting a controversial policy to expand areas where people can let their dogs off the leash. A doggie matchmaker brought Erskineville woman Megan Rutledge and her standard poodle Roxy together. ''The breeder did personality testing on me and the dog and matched my personality to her, asking questions like 'How will it fit into your family home?''' she said. Interesting - I interact with my dogs all day every day and I dont vaccinate them yearly as I believe that is not good for them and I have the research to back that up and I chose breeds I dont have to groom too often. Sometimes I feel looking after them is a chore too just as I do with my kids. OH OH ! Ah but is your research condoned and conducted by the Animal Wefaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare trailblazers? I think not Ms Steve!

No, because I don't pass as a responsible breeder :p Seriously I am very wary of definitions that try to encompass individuals .. you know and I know that Jake is in the perfect home for him and that's all that matters

The seminar doesn't do much for welfare (sic) or I suppose it depends on how you define welfare - whether you genuinely care about canine welfare or whether your interest spurns from an animal rights ticket.

Which are?

I was looking at employing a local to look after the proprty ie fence repair, pooh pick, hay to horses, general farm hand etc BUT was advised that insurance / work cover legalities made it fraught with problems. Not so simple to offer a local teenager casual work any more - ie what happens if he/she falls over and sprains their ankle etc while at your place - big insurance and liability implications.

I think the Schoeffelkate comes in the colour and size you want. they do made to order, but I'm not sure if they supply batteries, they might not even supply ears... hmmm ... sorry my bad! couldn't resist! blondie best you go to your local pound and have a look there - plenty of schoeffelkates and maybe a dog that you're looking for, to be found there

oh so do I! Troy why is this thread still here? I'm with Jed - it really ought to be removed, afterall DOL is about pedigree dogs and the voice and reach of DOL (and its pedigree dogs) shouldn't be (ab)used to push McGeevy's barrow.
-
Now you're just plain WRONG! I'm sorry, but this is absolutely incorrect and I can't let you post rubbish like that without correcting you. Uh, sorry, but I have heard McGreevy bag out pedigree dogs so do please tell me where I can find him praising them to the heavens. I would love to come but my perfectly healthy, soon-to-be 14 years old pedigree dog would probably prefer me to stay at home and I know whose company I'd prefer. Well I hope your pedigree dog isn't a male Sheridan, AND you have the kids locked away because according to keynote speaker the learned Kate Schoeffel Studies show that children get bitten by dominant purebred male dogs.

Thankyou goldchow much appreciated

??? Lilli.. I have seen you at dog shows.. we both exhibit in Group 6! If you can't make it to the seminar, next time I see you I will introduce myself properly. I hope to see you at the seminar though so I can lay your fears at rest. you mean when I actually turn up? kingsfolly are you going to convince me that anything with McGeevy and the lineup above is for the benefiot of pedigree dogs? okay I'm entered and have accom booked for cohuna, I'm going with brasco so you can't miss him and I'll be at the show a day early so I can't miss it. Seriously I await to be enlightened

Now you're just plain WRONG! I'm sorry, but this is absolutely incorrect and I can't let you post rubbish like that without correcting you. Well it must go both ways because I can't let you post rubbish like McGeevy and Pauline and Co are in it for the pure breeds so lets all clap hands and sing together ...
-
That's a bit unnecessary isn't it? Why not come along on the day and listen to what they have to say and ask questions or get involved in a discussion rather than just be rude? Hope to see you there! rude? I'll call a narc when I see one thanks - and I stopped being an apologist for my pure breds when I realised what game was up and where it was heading. Dont despair - I'm not just rude I also get involved, ask questions and aid discussions where I can.
-
that would be because the MDBA is about pure breeds - McGeevy Pauline Tammie and friends are about cross breeding - and removing pure bred dogs.
-
oh look there goes my friend Tammie and her overseer Pauline, prototype pushers of modpet. Good to see all that research paying dividends ...

Can anyone recommend an excellent, experienced vet in QLD (near gold coast, but ultimately will travel) The type of vet you'd trust with your best dog (your whole kennel!) and have absolute faith in the vet's diagnosis and advice. Does not have to be a reproduction specialist, I'm looking for a vet with expereince, is breeder friendly, and has the nous and know-how to think outside the square. Thankyou

Just Came Home From The Dog Kennel Disappointed
BJean replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
are you sure about the daily rate? maybe you paid for six days and not seven? -
wow that was uppity - you never know for what or why reasons she wrote the things that she wrote (notwithstanding they are the communications of a 21yo to her peers)

Please Make Sure Your Dogs Are Okay In The Heat
BJean replied to InspectorRex's topic in General Dog Discussion
but in Vic there is great variance in temperature depending on where you are located?? -

And, you know this how? Di intuition. look at leo's foreleg, slight turn of stifle, coat, body shape, ears, muzzle - sorry to be a smart arse, but Leo is a CAO and yes I have spoken to SADS. And ella, take away her colour and paint her white. ella is the poster girl for a very common product when maremma is crossed with anatolian. (ASD x maremma always results in black or brindle puppies, they are a lot more common than people realise - only that their colour gives no hint that they be from white/fawn parentage).

Being raised to accept kids and being suitable/ideal to be raised in a home with children are NOT the same thing. Breed does matter, and to imagine that a dog being a combination of breeds will somehow overide this fact, is fanciful. BUT it's way too hot today, so I'm off to the beach and I'm sure another DOLer will come along and fill in the blanks ;)
