What is a "guard" dog?
-
Just makes the dog sound more unreliable and not suited. Most dog attacks happen in the home of the dog and to those it knows. But its a Golden Reriever! They dont attack. Must be some other obscure reason this cant be what it seems at all

If your friend leases the bitch back to you for the breeding and litter, then the pups will be in your name under your prefix.

I didn't realize there was a direct correlation between the number of posts and anything at all really. This is where the personal denigration starts is it? All of you who stated you would have euthanised The Ark's cerebral palsy puppy have only served to prove his/her point. When you breed puppies, you are either going to keep them or sell them as show quality, rehome them as pets, or keep them as pets. In this case you are all agreeing it is not show quality, and you can't rehome it as a pet, and for whatever reason you choose not to keep it as a pet, so you would euthanise. So like The Ark said, breeders would have put this puppy to sleep. Get off your high horses. This is all about you getting offended by someone saying you would have done exactly what you said yourself you would have done. Maybe if The Ark had said some instead of most there would have been less offense taken, but I certainly haven't seen a majority of people here arguing they also would have kept that dog, seems the ones on the attack are the ones whose decision would have been to put it down. No I don't need to keep a doomed puppy alive until the point where it suffers enough to override my own emotion.

Quarantine facilities have dog handlers. Not trainers. Not anyone qualified to deal dog behaviour and its assessment. 3 months? That's a big 'if'. you describe a dog already in Australia quarantine - where to now if the import process does not proceed??? TT would happen before import, what ya doing with your examples, you're getting them all muddled! yes indeed it's a tough one!

what is this?

I'm sorry, I find that statement offensive, Maybe those 'many breeders' might have put her down from an ethical, humane point of view, based on her expected quality of life, NOT because she wasn't potential ribbon winning or pumping out puppies as their motive. fifi edited for spelling and to bold the text because I'm peed off. Many not all. Unless you're certain you've been included within the many classification, it seems strange that you'd choose to be offended. Asking for a withdrawal seems even stranger ... This thread is about the benefits of adopting legless dogs lol! strangeness took centre stage a loooong time ago

I have imported a fair number of dogs and never have they been quarantined prior to arriving in Australia. Which county quarantined your dog prior to it leaving for Australia? Answer to your question about people improting dogs, no people who import dogs don't give a crap what type of dog they import and look for agressive sick dogs, they want to spend S10,000 to get this type of dog into Asutralis. Are you for real? Now can we move on to some reality. BTW most of the dogs come over with peopel when they move and are pets, (yes I am sure they are also sick and agressive pets) that they love. Now moving on in the real world. These temperament tests will be done prior to leaving by some kind of certified behavioral person or vet. The owner of the dog will have to hire and pay what I am guessing 400 to 600 hundred dollars to get this test done and the paper work written up. Then it will sent as part of the application process. Right now it coast about $10,000 AUD or more (not including the price of the dog if you are importing to try to improve the breed by bringing in needed new bloodlines) to import your pet dog from the easy countries like the UK. Your talking thousands more plus 5 months wait or boarding from the US Canada and part of Europe and who could guess how much from many other coutries. How are you with affording this cost of importing a pet dog right now? Is it not enough, should it cost more? Can I ask how many imported dogs you have brought into Australia? Is there ever going to be a cost level that makes you just say that is enough, I will leave my pooch behind as I cannot afford to bring him with me? Can you tell us how much will just be too much as far as youir pocket book goes? Are you sure that pushing people with financial burdens and a process what goes on for months of hassles and hoops to jump through, paper work, health tests, vet exams, inspections by government vets and so on to the point that they will leave their pets behind, is really going to stop dog attacts in Australia? oh SS, riddler's not even sure about what it is they're espousing!

Don't be asking me to waste more of my time explaining. You still can't read the process from the AQIS site correctly.

Rehoming a dog because it is not fit to rehome is not the same as a puppy not being a candidate for breeding or showing. You cant rehome the mini pinscher pup, because right now you don't know whether it will keel over or not. I'd euth a cerebral palsy pup and my canine chiro specialist would tell me to do the same. keeping a puppy alive until it suffers enough for your emotion to stand aside is not heroic.

Why can't you have the dog xrayd by a different vet and send it to someone else for scoring?
-
Do you import? NB: The assessment would take place prior to the dog arriving in Australia I haven't yet. Only those who would seek to import dangerous &/or diseased dogs, banned breeds, ova/sperm from diseased dogs or banned breeds would be affected by this recommendation. Talk about making mountains out of mole hills. For the honest, the ethical & the responsible it would business as usual, with little or no extra expense. ya reckon? How about you actually go and learn about the soapbox your on and then come back to postulate your assessments and grandiose generalisations? It would save those that care, a lot of time from having to correct your fictitious forecasts! Thankyou
-
Do you understand the import process? or do you generally reel off pontifications on scenarios that you know nothing about?

They shouldn't be judging a group unless they are properly educated in the breed standards for that group. It's just not going to happen.

haha I remember years ago with my first Anatolian, I wrote that he was a Labrador x. It worked I guess

goodness double post

I don't think its because of show ring competition, more like the battle of the earnest. It's got to the point where to say you barely breed is a good thing ie I'm a breeder but I breed only once every decade. I mean come on.
-
Did the vet tell you this at the time she was desexed?

Pups are definitely registered and I've been told the price is cheap. There have been a couple of breeders mention that they would point a couple of people in our direction but nothing yet. All but one person that has been in contact has ended up with a pup - 4 enquiries total. It's sad, they are such delightful puppies. Megz I tried to send you a PM but for some reason it wont work. so: If your breed is a large or largish breed and would make a good family companion / watch dog and suit a rural environment PM me your breed and details and i will pass the family puppy enquiries on. My puppies all have homes but I am still getting enquiries and some of the homes sound really lovely but are not suited to my breed or they are suited, and there are no puppies available for them.
-
Can any breeders of the same breed or similar breeds help you with puppy homes? Do you have interest but then no purchasers or no initial interest for purchase at all?

How cold is a cold snap in QLD? unless it's a lot colder than I realise, the pups should have survived overnight with their dam present. If you are going to keep the toughest, most capable pups, with the hardiest immune system you shouldn't have to depend on heated whelping boxes to keep the pups alive.

I'm not a business. I'm an obsessive that is fascinated by certain types of dogs and to her own detriment does not see or recognise geographical distance. Sometimes I answer emails, sometimes I don't; it depends how busy I am and I guess where I am. My website is my own online photo album. Pretty hard to lose that when it's kept neatly for you in cyberspace by the powers at troy.

Is your vet experienced with neonates? ie: reproductive specialist If the puppy has lost weight and the above is her feeding schedule then she is not sucking effectively from her dam. This could be because she does not have the strength/energy How are you supp feeding her - bottle or tube? Pinch the skin behind her neck - does it go back immediately?
-
I would give her a small amount of glucose solution. If she is falling asleep and not feeding, she is not as strong as she should be and does not have the energy to feed properly. I would also give her a small amount of antibiotic just in case she is unwell. If the puppy is still losing weight either her energy intake is inadequate or she is unwell or she cannot digest the supplemented food properly. You can help with the first two. The puppy should stabilise (ie not lose more weight) by next weigh in (if you do them) The pup should really start to improve immediately ie skin texture, feel of muscles etc What are you supplementing with? ETA: Sick puppies can still move to the mother but they may not suckle properly, which is what your puppy sounds like she is doing. It is when she gets more sick that she will no longer crawl to the warmth of her siblings and dam.
