  1. A lot of dogs from Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan etc) and Turkey have their ears removed. It is usually done when they are puppies but some are done as adult dogs. Once the hair grows over the ear stub I cannot tell how or what age the cut was done.
  2. Miss Purple and Miss Black for me Congratulations on the birth of your little ones, and the coming home of your older ones!
  3. yes i could see i was being baited there. Ok then, enlighten me with a good reason for hacking off a dog's whole ears with scissors. I'm not talking about ear shaping or hunting dogs that are at risk of injury, since you can tell when someone's just hacked at a dog's ear inthe backyard to make it look all fighty. Also i've never even seen a pit, so i don't want anyone to think anything about them. I was just adding a historical (and in some places, contemporary) fact. I'm not baiting. How you can tell if a dogs ears have been cropped ("hacked off") at the skull with scissors or not? I've seen many dogs with ears cropped to the skull and I still can't tell when/how it was done. Yet you can?
  4. They cut off the ears at the head on pit fighting dogs so that the other dog can't get latched onto it and rip it off during a fight. What about the other dogs that have their ears cropped at the skull? Just victims of jerk humans that want to look tough ETA: i'm not lumping in cropping with unsanitary ear chopping here, although i'm not personally a fan of cropping and docking, it is nothing like the cruelty of crudely lopping off dog ears to fit a fighting-dog image Well you're assuming a lot yet you want others to desist from making assumptions about PBs.

  6. How can you tell the difference?
  7. Here is excellent article on Central Asia dogs in Tajikistan, beautiful imagery also: http://www.tagiko.com/a-journey-among-the-central-asian-shepherds-at-work
  8. Oh yes it is. My CAO bloated for nearly 24 hours and I got him to the vet just in time. His brother bloated also, for a similar time period, but unfortunately he died on arrival at the vet. Bloat without torsion kills just as efficiently because the engorging stomach compromises the heart and lungs and reduces blood flow; dog goes into shock, has heart arrhythmia and dies.
  9. If a GR has black hairs through its coat or black patches it can't be e/e. yes
  10. If it is recessive black on agouti allele: a^y > a^w > a^t > a fawn > wolf sable > black and tan > black recessive black and recessive black and tan pattern is my favourite obsession amongst Kangals/Anatolians :D
  11. There is recessive black. Agouti allele. Flat Coats carry this.
  12. This is really daft. Dog legislation comes as no surprise when you have logic and expectations about dogs such as this. What you define as 'approach', a dog confined by leash (and therefore cannot respond with flight, only fight) can easily deem attack. Particularly given the morphology of the frenchie rushing towards it. The on lead dog caused no damage to the frenchie. Did not bite. Was not even frenzied. Just a calm pin hold to the ground. Very nice behaviour imo
  13. Why? Maybe YOU think dogs obviously bred & trained to rip into people are OK - I don't. Also, I find the cropped-ear thing hideous really you shouldn't be so sensitive to imagery.
  14. All good i just sent them K9Pro's website.
  15. Apologies in advance as this theme will bore you Training Forum regulars ad nauseum: Are there any articles (unbiased, but I don't think that is possible) on the actualities of the check chain and halti? and/or articles that discuss the different approaches to training. A puppy home is deciding on what obedience group to attend with their future pup and they asked me about halti or check chain. I dont believe in halti's because they will not stop a dog that decides to go. But instead of giving the pup home my maniacal ravings I thought I could send them an article or two about the check chain, halti etc. I'm hoping they can find a common sense, practical training group that applies the training and the training tools to the individual dog. TIA
  16. I'd love to! Probably need about $100k though to type enough reference animals from each breed and buy all the lab consumables And then hope that genetic technologies don't sue me..... (eta just pointing out that as MalteseLuna said since they own the patents and don't tell anyone how they test, anyone else coming along would have to start from scratch. Since it's a private company, they are naturally anticompetitive, even to universities) I think the ANKC asked GT Labs to develop a DNA test for Anatolians/Kangals and I think the cost to develop the DNA was about $50 per sample. How/Why could GT Labs sue? There are other Lab companies that also do similar DNA testing? http://www.animalsdna.com/ http://www.healthgene.com/canine-dna-testing/list-of-breeds/
  17. Dogs Victoria???? Oh they post an image of a muzzled Rottweiler under the topic dangerous dogs in the last gazette! They don't even stick up for their own!!! As you can see I am quite angry about it Oh really? That'd be right, the month my membership lapses and I get no gazette I miss out on more gold from the Organization. Nope, can't expect anything from Dogs Vic. They are not capable of helping.
  18. Can anyone recommend a laboratory to carry out DNA research? ie to develop a Breed DNA signature for a breed? Thank you
  19. Yep Rottweilers will also be added to the restricted breed's list.
  20. Which demonstrates the numpty logic being pushed forward. If it is not possible to determine whether a dog is an Am Staff or a Pit Bull based on looks alone why are Pit Bulls being singled out, and not both Am Staff and Pit Bull? If two dogs look identical, and pedigreed Am Staff only make up a small percentage of the total Am Staff population why is it Pit Bulls that are to be eradicated? Is Pit Bull the name given to rogue Am Staffs? New regulations to be released tomorrow by the Baillieu government will also mean dogs that meet the description of a pit bull but who are described as American Staffordshire terriers by their owners, will need certificate of pedigree evidence to prove the dog is an American Staffordshire terrier. If it is accepted as a reasonable point of of difference that a printed pedigree - the only thing that can determine a Pit Bull type from a bone fide Am Staff - is all that separates an Am Staff from a Pit Bull - just how much more crap will the numpty Victorian community willingly accept as plausible and a 'good idea'? And where are all the registered Am Staff breeders? Under the same dung heap I guess.
  21. Yeah I bet that is convenient.
  22. It is not suitable for all breeds. You can avoid desexing your dog if you have a letter from your veterinarian.
  23. Huh? The dog's described are not fighting dogs, have an inate desire to please and ARE NOT IN THIS COUNTRY. The author makes the point that its humans that determine whether or not a relationship with a dog will be a success. That's hardly in agreeance with your :kill all the fighting dogs: proposition Matthew. PF, with respect I really dont know why you bother wasting your time with the alterego calling himself Mathew B. let him or her or it think what they like. They are inconsequential. You can't saw sawdust. Even you, PF
