Any News On Ned Please?
BJean replied to grumpette's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
MUP particularly. The thread is quite scathing. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/239729-rip-ned/page__st__15 Not necessarily. I dont know what the answers are, but it seems many assumptions made about Ned and his actuality, and making more now about the original owner will be to no avail also. As someone else wrote, it was a train wreck. And now it's finished. -
Any News On Ned Please?
BJean replied to grumpette's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Reading Ned's history I would not think that rehoming to a multidog household was likely to be a success, or at least 'success' with the expectation of integrating Ned. On DA: It is not unusual for DA dogs to be inhibited in a Kennel environment. Also I'm not sure what is meant by unprovoked aggression between dogs? If dogs dont like each other or one dog is not comfortable then aggression is exhibited. In any case, poor Ned and for his protracted end. -
Losing those we love is really difficult and I'm sorry that some posts in this thread have become narky ... but maybe it was inevitable with the topic. I've learned that I never know what I will ultimately do when it comes time to say goodbye, always the circumstances are so different, and the heartache is so poignant, it is not possible for me to prepare. Last September I lost my dearest brave BJean, I still grieve for her. I am embarrassed to write that when I collected her ashes, BJean went driving with me for a few days. This brought me comfort and I knew she was there and so between me and BJean it was okay. For me, comparing price details of what is an intensely private situation is not meaningful. I dont care what anyone else paid, what you will pay or what you wont pay :) Each person's circumstance is unique.

BlackJaq, for pigs, you need a dog that will actually confront and kill the pigs. From what I understand of maremmas (correct me if Im wrong steve et al) from the feedback from farmers with feral pigs as a problem and threat to their stock / farm supplies - maremmas will not take on the pig and I'm not sure if physically / mentally the maremma is prime for killing feral pigs. Honestly, not all Anatolians are either, you really need a dog that has the type of psyche that does not back down, will out think the pigs and also have a search and destroy mentality. At the same time, this type of dog is a lot of responsibility; however it can work very well. If you like, you can email a lady in Hawaii who has an assertive male Anatolian from me and lives in an isolated jungle area of Hawaii - your farm setup sounds very similar to hers. Her Anatolian male (Hannibal) lives with a maremma, a west highland terrier, miniature donkeys, free range chickens, horses, goats ... he was killing young pigs at 6 months, and at 12 months kills male adult pigs - but mostly the pigs have stopped coming near the property. Also, Hannibal has learned not to kill transient feral cats - important to maintain as otherwise the rodent population becomes a problem. Hannibal has also learned not to scatter and run through the chickens when in pursuit. You can email Hannibal's owner about how she raised / trained her assertive personality type A  Anatolian. Hannibal's owner utilised maremmas before and the temperament / reactivity of Hannibal was a very steep learning curve for them. The owner found the maremma had a stronger bond to the animals (in general I think this is true for Anatolian Vs maremma) and the Anatolian was more combative, and so the combination worked well: Maremma to usher the animals and stay with them in the barn and the Anatolian to provide the physical force and ultimate deterrent of feral pigs (and sometimes wild / stray dogs). Before Hannibal came along, the maremmas would run into the barn with the animals but the pigs would then barge the barn, resulting in stock and feed losses.

Review Of Australian Quarrantine Importation
BJean replied to zeebie's topic in General Dog Discussion
no. It is about the perceived level of Rabies control and relations between AQIS and other government bodies. Well, whatever it is, there is still a question about what happens if you want to import a Russian dog. Same as always. Same as what happens and happens if you want to import a Turkish dog or Kazakh dog or Belorus dog. It's a PITA and you send the dog to another country first. And it wont be eligible for travel to Australia until it is at least 10-12 months old, usually older. And if you are not fluent in the native language get an interpreter. That's my advice :) And expect no help. And goodness if you are returning to Australia from the above and a woman traveling on your own, expect to be stopped in Australia. haha the suspect foreign countries will welcome you but your homeland will treat you like a criminal stranger. Oh and they wont know the dog breed and they wont believe you. -
Any dog which carries agouti a^w will have these eye markings. It is hardly unique for husky malamute et al BTW: The dog looks as he is supposed to be - a Kelpie X GSD in the video you posted. PS The video and soundtrack just makes you :)

I don't believe you can make that sweeping statement. It seems that pockets of Anatolians since 1985 are upholding that statement. Just like there are those who can be exposed to the sun all their life and never get skin cancer - because they do not have the inherent propensity to develop skin cancer. In multiple environments there have been Anatolian living juxtapose with the CAS, and it is the CAS which have bloated not the Anatolian. One of my ASD boys enjoys dietary no-nos because I know he can digest anything. Last night he ate left over fish n chips (I guess anything that pees on fox carcasses and then proceeds to eat them seems digestive indestructible.) And tonight I came home to find his half sister had opened the walk in pantry and eaten 700g of chocolate cookies. (Not happy jan!) Not to mention bench surfing had also won her a pot of steamed rice. But she will be fine. (if it helps those looking for precursor warning signs: some of the CAS which bloated, burped a lot as part of their normal habits. This is data collected after the fact )

just to be clear. Are you saying if there has never been a family member who bloated then your dog will never bloat? How far back do you go in the pedigree? I am saying, if the dog does not have the genetic propensity to bloat then the dog will not bloat. And yet others refute the suggestion. None of these theories has been scientifically proven. Who wants to put their hand up that to suffer from bloat a dog must have the inherent propensity? Not many. These days what is scientifically proven - particularly with companion animals - depends on political outcome and financial incentive of the study. What is bloat - a malfunction of the digestive tract? We know that size and deep chest is not a causative factor, no more than to have hips is a causative factor of HD. A broader scope shows us that bloat affected dogs exist in population pockets. It could be the inability to synthesize an enzyme or the inability to synthesize enough enzyme - brought about my environmental conditions ... but the inability must exist in the first instance. On familial: CAS litter: 4 boys, 1 girl. At 2yo all three boys suffered from bloat months apart in different states, different home environments, different diets. 24 months later: the fourth male dies from blaot. So from four boys: deceased from bloat: 3, gastroplexy: 1. Other dogs in this family also dec from bloat. The female from the litter is desexed. I believe (hope) she will not suffer from bloat because one of the significant environmental triggers for bitches (season) has been removed. Pockets of Anatolians in Australia, with no change of bloodline since 1984, and pockets of Anatolian with no change in bloodline since 1998 (includes reg and non reg dogs) have no known incidence of bloat. I am watching the ASDs with import blood. I dont know what that carries. Hopefully nil bloat also. Some Anatolians are Great Dane height, so for me it is not satisfactory that bloat causation be: "an ailment of deep chested dogs."

"Not necessarily. It depends on the dog and the owner; what the dog's base temperament is and how it is raised by its owner. Some are good with children, some are absolutely not."

Any bloat in the family? imo the propensity for bloat is familial. Once a dog has the propensity for bloat, then environmental factors play a role in triggering the bloat episode. For male dogs onset is younger. Female: later onset and often at the time of their season. If there is no inherent propensity for bloat in a dog, then it wont mater what environment factors are met, the dog will not bloat.
