  1. We're back from the vets - she gave an inj. of tramadel (sp*) and it's the first time in a few days he actually came home and wagged his tail. He even did an excited bark when his Dad came home. :D (DP was only gone for 5 mins lol) - How I have missed that little stub of his wagging. But I'm waiting for the call from the vet to let me know when the specialist can get there to do an Ultrasound. Hopefully tomorrow. I can't go by 'everything is indicating towards...' - I need answers now! I need answers so I can make the decision on what is best for him.
  2. He's in pain again and I'm in tears... back to the vet!
  3. He had a bowel movement this morning and there was no blood He's still abit uncomfortable, but nothing like yesterday. I'll see how he goes for the rest of the morning/afternoon - and decide from there if he needs another inj. for pain relief. He's still eating/drinking well (though I would like him to eat a bit more - but I'm not going to push it IYKWIM). I guess it's just a day by day thing atm.
  4. Had to take him back today as he had some pain. His temp was a bit high as well. They gave him an injection for the pain and he laying in his bed next to me. Hate seeing him like this...
  5. Sorry I forgot to come on last night - he's home! Still not well, but there is no bleeding. If he bleeds/vomits I have to take him straight back again. He seems to be in a bit of pain everytime he drinks/eats for about 10 mins. He's on 3 different medications atm. The carafate 1/2 hour before he eats, then another liqid medication (zurtec or something) that has to be put on his food and AB's as well.
  6. I just come back from seeing him, he seems to have aged overnight! But I was allowed to take him outside for awhile, where he had a bowel movement which had a little bit of blood in it, but it wasn't diarrhea, so it's firming up. Also he ate the boiled chicken I bought him. Still very quiet. How hard is it to leave when they have to stay! But hopefully this afternoon, after the results, I'll be able to bring him home.
  7. They thinks he had a big bleed from a Gastric Ucler. He's in overnight so they can monitor him and do a repeat bloood test to make sure the bleeding has stopped. (he's had no more bleeding since the morning). Sorry I didn't take all of it in as I had a massive headache. If he is still showing bleeding in the morning, they'll have to stop it and Something about Blood transfusion. When i spoke to them, he still had a little bit of pain in his tummy, but he was comfortable. I'll talk to them tomorrow morning and, if he's strong enough, ask them to do an endoscope just to make sure it's an Ulcer and not something really nasty. Fingers crossed for my little one. ETA: Thank you everyone.
  8. Thank you Erny and cavNrott - it is hard waiting. I'm smack bang in the middle of Fertility Treatment, so I'm extremely hormonal and the tears are just falling... I got him as a puppy when I was first struggling to have a baby. Before he came along, I wasn't a 'dog lover', but he converted me. He's been my constant companion and source of comfort over the years...
  9. Had to rush him to the Vets early this morning Xray's showed no tumour or herniated disc (but she did warn me that the xray may not show that) in the spine, so we stopped the Valium and Pain meds and come home with a Carafate (sp*) so I could give him that before he ate as he still had a bit of diarrhea. He ate that night, not alot, then last night he wasn't really interested in food. Then this morning, when I took him out for his morning toilet break, I thought he had really bad diarrhea, but when I looked it was blood. He's now admitted and I'm waiting for them to call with the results of the blood tests... My poor little man!
  10. He's at the vets now having the Xrays done - I feel sick with worry! FTA - he had blood in his stools on Saturday, thankfully I had the vet appointment that day. They think, because of the meds he's on, the chicken necks are irritating his stomach. So he's on Boiled Chicken and Broccoli.
  11. 3rd night of valium... He was very quiet today when I got home. I'm hoping it's the effects of the valium. He won't eat, but is drinking, he also won't really look up at you. The vet called me yesterday to see how he was and asked if I could 'test' the area in his back to see if he was reacting (both on and off valium), you could see the muscle tense up, but no 'warning' from him. He still gets the drunk look about 20 mins after having it and then becomes extremely hungry, he also will look up at you. So I don't know. I will give him the 5 days like the vet said and take him back. I think I will just go ahead and get them to do an Xray to see what is really going on in there.
  12. I gave him the valium last night, he was staggering about - I could have cried, but he looked so happy at the same time. Then this morning he was just laying in his bed, vacant eye'd Just have to keep on telling myself, it's only for 5 days... This is the first time in 13 years I've had any real medical problems with him - so it's tugging at the heart strings atm.
  13. Ok I'm back from his normal vet, told her what the other vet found/did. She checked him over thoroughly. He had a little bit of pain in his tummy area (up near the ribs) but he really warned her when she touched his back (I think she said the L2 or L3 vertebrae), - She went over the worst case scenarios, herniated disc (what would be involved with that), pancreas etc etc. But everything is looking more towards the back as she pointed out that he wasn't looking up at us. I did notice that, but I thought it was because he was 'down', now I feel bad. So that would explain the pacing at night, because he can't get comfortable. Poor little man. So, for now, he's on valium (1 at night) to help keep him calm, to relax the muscles and to give him a proper rest for the next 5 days and then go back and see her. He's still to stay on the pain medication. Strictly no jumping, playing, running etc. If he hasn't shown any improvement, we will look into Xrays/Ultrasounds. We want to try the medication first before putting him through the rest. I also have to ask the other vet to send through the results of the blood tests he did over a week ago. As she wants it on her record so they can keep an eye on his kidneys (because of his mother) and because one of the levels was a bit high. I'll come back in and keep you updated. Thank you to everyone. :) Oh and my female now has cream for her rash.
  14. I just made an appointment for them this afternoon, so I'll let you know how we go. :)
  15. No he's not doing any of that. I'll take him back to the vet and ask them to do xrays/Ultrasounds - rule anything nasty out - and discuss the pacing. He had 2 good nights and then last night, started to pace, but I managed to get him back onto his bed. Usually he will pace and won't settle until he lays next to me, that's why I'm thinking more along the 'discomfort' side as when he's not well, he sticks to me like glue. Oh and got home last night to find my female has an itchy rash on her tummy! If it doesn't rain, it pours LOL
  16. I was thinking chicken necks might be too much for him to digest at his age. I forgot to mention that he had a bit of diarrhea when we went to the vet, they suggested to put him on Boiled Chicken and rice for a couple of days (no biscuits either). He seemed quite happy on it, but same thing, he wasn't eating much of it.
  17. I have a 13 year old male JR – he is starting to go blind and deaf, nothing major, just due to old age. He has arthritis in his back leg, he’s on twice yearly cartrophen injections, he has Sashas Blend – (I have prolet for him and my female, but it is only ever given when I notice they are uncomfortable, so very rarely) – he has two lumps on either side of his rib cage – they have been tested and are just fatty lumps. But a couple of weeks ago, I noticed he has dropped his food intake by half. He has chicken necks of a night and biscuits (senior) in the morning. Then I noticed he wasn’t himself and he started to pace at night around our bed. So I took him to the vets (2 weeks ago). They listened to his heart and lungs – fine. Felt his stomach for obstructions/lumps – fine. Checked teeth, overall check of his body for lumps/bumps – fine. But they did notice he had pain in his back, just up from the hip area – so they have given me medication for him – can’t remember the name of it, but it’s liquid and smells like honey. He’s been on that for over a week. I found out recently that his mother died of kidney failure, so I asked them to test that as well (I was already there, no harm in checking it out). BT showed that 1 of the 3 levels was a little bit high (I think it was the CREA) so they wanted a urine test. Urine was diluted (as he had a big drink) so asked to do another one in a weeks time. That was done Saturday just gone. That showed everything was normal. Since I found out about his back, I’ve put him back onto his old bed (we bought them new beds) and he is quite happy now, but he’s food intake is still not good. His pooping is fine, he’s weeing fine, he’s a bit stiff with his walking – and he quieter and sleeping a lot. I’m just wondering if I should take him for more tests eg xray/Blood tests – if so, what should I ask them to check for or if I’m just mistaking all of the changes as medical when it’s just the process of ageing? This is my first dog, so my first senior!
  18. The little man come home today :p He's extremely skinny (which is to be expected) and he was also depressed, he was mopping around the house for about 1/2 hour - But that didn't last long. One of the kids stood on his squeaky toy by accident and that was it - he was off, running around with it in his mouth. He was so excited too see it. But of course, that didn't last long either, he just doesn't have the energy atm When I left, he was snuggling with his Mum (my sister) in front of the heater. Thank you everyone for your thoughts!
  19. *quickly popping back in* My sister just called and said she spoke to the vet again tonight and he is perking up. He's also managed to eat a little and has kept it down. So fingers crossed.
  20. An update... My sister went in a saw the little guy on Monday and he wasn't doing too well. Then when she went in a saw him yesterday he stood up and greeted her, so everyone was hoping he was over the hump... But he went downhill again today How much more can his body take? They haven't given up on him yet.
  21. Forgot to add again... When I spoke to the vet he said 'Colostridial' *sp and Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis.
  22. Thanks for the replies... After seeing the vet on Friday Night (not our usual one, but he was the one closest to her as they only moved 2 weeks ago) he said Parvo after doing a sniff test. (Trust me, I was there when he did it) I called our Vet Saturday after posting on here, and was concerned that they didn't give anymore medication etc etc She took the little man to our Vet on Saturday and he's been there ever since. They did testing and it's some sort of Bacterial Infection. He still an extremely sick dog. He passed blood out of his back passage yesterday and apparently he had blood in his vomit (Don't know if it was last night or this morning). My 2 dogs seem to be ok, but they have been a little bit quiet since I got home from work today, so I'll keep a close eye on them. My heart is breaking for him and I have everything crossed that he'll recover from this. ETA: has anyone come across something like this?
  23. We took my relatives dog to the vet late yesterday afternoon, they have dx him with Parvo! He's a Staffy, he's 12 months old this month and he is fully vaccinated and was due for his 12 month needle at the end of this month. Thursday he was a little Lethargic, yesterday afternoon he started vomitting and there was diarrhea in the garden, so straight down to the vet - he wouldn't walk from the carpark to the door. When they took his temp they noticed blood in his bowel and he had a tempreture. They gave him 2 injections, one to help with the vomitting and diarrhea (sorry I don't have the receipt to find out what they gave him) and another of anti-biotics. The vet said to take him home and to give him small amounts of water, he wasn't dehydrated, and if he didn't show signs of improvement by this morning, to take him straight back. I haven't heard anything this morning just yet. What are his chances of surviving Parvo? I did the stupid thing of googling last night. He's such a beautiful little boy. Also I have 2 dogs, and 11 year old and an 8 year old (fully vaccinated). I took my shoes off outside before coming home last night and stopped there access to me so I could go straight inside and into the shower. My clothes were put straight into the washing machine. But the staffy was in my car. What is the best way to disinfect my car? And what are the chances of my dogs getting it? Just need some reassurance - this is the first time I've come across Parvo and it's horrible.
  24. Well I got her home this afternoon, and atm she is laying next to me sleeping on her bed. I can't move, cause everytime I do, she follows me and keeps on whimpering, even now she whimpers. Poor Darling Here she is not looking to happy They also gave me anti inflammatories to give to her, as well as anti biotics. But they didn't give me any pain killers. Are the anti inflammatories pain killers??
